So I am building a new PC for my brother and trying to decide what PSU to go with.

17 930 4.0Ghz
5870
12Gb RAM
x2 1.5 TB HDD
SSD
3 CD ROM
Lots of accessories used

I was thinking about a nice stone 1000w PSU, something that is proven to be a good quality.

Here is what I was thinking about getting from newegg

CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-1000HX 1000W

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371012
Antec TruePower Quattro TPQ-1000 1000W

I can always get a 900w PSU as well, but I think 1k is a nice round number to have.

Thanks for the help

Way over kill! A Corsair 550W or 650W is the ideal or 750W for future CF. The Antec New True PSU's of the same wattage earn the same recommendation.

If you just want an ultimate, never worry forever, expand till Star Trek, recommendation, it would be for a Corsair 850HX or Antec Signature 850W.

Best Wishes,
Dave:D

By the way why is there such a price difference on newegg between the 2?

Between the two what? The Signature 850W and the Corsair 850TX? Main reason is that the Signature 850W is of higher quality than the 850TX.

I would suggest going as big as your budget will allow. More power supply than you need means that it should run cooler and last longer. If you need 550W of power to run your system, and you buy a 650W PSU, you're looking at running at 85% capacity. With an 850W PSU you're at 65%, and with a 1000W PSU, you're only running at 55% maximum.

You've got enough stuff putting hot air in your case because it has to in order to give you the speed you want. Your PSU doesn't add to the system speed, so why let it add any more heat than necessary?

Just my opinion, I'm no expert.

All PSU's should be loaded between 40% & 60% of the rated max for most efficient operation, this also allows sufficient "headroom" for spikes & transients.:D

I would go for a 750W PSU. You have the Antec TruePower New 750W (modular) at 91€.

Another good options:
CORSAIR TX750 750W : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006

XFX Black Edition 750W (modular): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207003

THERMALTAKE Thoughpower XT 775W (modular): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153127

If you want you can go for a 1500W PSU, but with those ones you will have much more than enough even with 5870CF.

You can find reviews for all of them here: PSU REVIEW DATABASE

Sprinkle dried deer penis on power supply. Make power supply very strong.

a little off topic, but why 12GBs of RAM...? you could buy a top notch psu with just the money you would save scaling it back to 6GBs RAM...

I have a Corsair HX850 and it's pretty awesome, I think 1000w may definitely be a little more than you need for your setup. Though, if you are looking to sleeve cables, I've heard the Corsair PSUs are hard to sleeve (though I've not done it myself yet but plan to).

Hello,
This is my first post here at Hardforums so I figured it might as well be constructive. OCZ Mod XTreme power supplies are really good (and pretty cheap too). I have had 2 of the 700w Modulars and they worked fantastic (but were sold or given away to other people for their builds).

I now have a Corsair HX850, like the first reply stated, it's an awesome PSU. The modular cabling on it is fantastic. It's a very high-quality PSU and actually produces the voltages constistantly for optimal performance. I would suggest going with one. The HX850 is more than you need unless you're doing 3 GFX cards. Even two SLI or XFire cards won't kill this PSU. If you have 3 or more GFX cards you'll need to ramp up to a 1000 or 1250 PSU just to be safe.

1000w is overkill but you can never have enough watts i suppose. Id go with a 850w and it will be more than enough. You cant go wrong with either PSU though but you will certainly have the bling factor if you go with the Corsair. Im 99% sure that you wont notice a difference in performance though.
