Hello,

One of my hard drives which is about 5 yrs old is not showing up under devices and drives. went to disk management and it's asking me to initialize disk but whatever i select gives me an error message

I have a ton of data which I would love to save if possible. Just ordered a new hard drive

Try different sata cable and try mounting drive in another PC. Does it read in the BIOS?

Nope, once I get the sata to usb cable tomorrow, I will try to connect it that way.

Right now I am under lockdown so I only have access to one computer :(

Nothing in my computer has changed within the last 4 months so not sure what's going on.

I ordered a new hdd so at this point I just want to save the data

So this is an external HD? Try using usb port on the rear of PC, I had a drive that would not spin up if you plugged it into the front USB ports.

Could be corruption due to a few bad sectors in the wrong place. You may try hard drive recovery software.

You may also want to see what CrystalDiskInfo says about the drive's health. I mean if CDI says Caution it's could be time to replace the drive.

I am already replacing the drive, wish I could save the data but it could cost a pretty penny. It's an internal drive btw

this says otherwise:

"Last Device Instance Id: USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Kingston&Prod_DataTraveler_2.0&Rev_1.00\6&12d3d185&0

do you have a usb inserted at all? if so, remove it and reboot.
if you have multiple drive it may be worthwhile to remove all but the boot and problem drive. see if it shows up. or if you have an optical drive hook up the problem drive in its place.

I got that error when I went to try another SATA port and after talking to some people and some googling, I figured out that the drive is near dead.

Going to see if I can salvage anything tomorrow

If you want the data try recovery software ASAP. The best procedure I would do would be a bit for bit copy of the drive (using a linux utility called dd_rescue) to a brand new one and recover on that however if you are not familiar with linux my advice is to umplug the drive from the system until you are ready to try recover.

I expect CrystalDiskInfo would be Caution but tell you additional information like the # of bad sectors and how many of them are currently marked as having data but unreadable

Way ahead of you yanked it 2 hrs after the initial error

please stop repair or format the drive. in this situation, a data recovery app could be helpful, like Recuva, EaseUS, iBoysoft.

Already taken care of but thx for the advice
This issue usually happens if there isn't enough power to an External drive, or the drive controller has failed.
Remove the drive and attach it to another computer via a USB Adapter or Dock or Enclosure with a power adapter. If the drive does not spin up, it has failed.
BTW, this post introduces some basic tips to fix the external HDD problem.

On top of what has already been said... this is why you back up needed data. Drives will and do go bad.

It was one of my smaller media drives so I didn't lose anything that could not be replaced and since this happened I backed up whatever wasn't backed up already.
