Need Help Choosing PS3 vs Xbox360

The PS3's game library is comparable to where X360's was at this point in its life.
(6 months after release)

Of course at this point in time (early 2007) the # of good X360 games available is further along due to an earlier release. IMO the depth of their respective game libraries will likely be tied by the end of next year.

When someone is asking what console to buy *now*, saying "yeah, but xbox didn't have a lot of games either a year and a half ago" isn't very helpful.

ps---anyone who pays more than 40 bucks for 13 months of xbl hasn't ever heard of the magic of buying things on the internet. Check cheapassgamer and other sites and you can find hot deals on xbl subscriptions all the time. Mine was 39 for 13 months. Friend bought his on ebay for less.

360 all the way.

Have you even seen the games coming out in the next couple months?

There isn't even a question here, it's the 360. 360 already has a significantly better lineup and it's lineup for the foreseeable future look significantly better as well. PS3 has hardly any exclusives left, while the 360 has several big ones.

Most people are looking to buy a console for the long haul. They've both got at least 4 years of solid support ahead of them. Neither system has even hit full stride. For the next 12 months, the X360 will have a larger library, and a clear superiority in AAA titles. But a prudent decision should be made on what announced and likely future exclusive titles appeal to the buyer. Basing a purchase solely on what's out now is short-sighted IMO.

My earlier point was that PS3 is at the point where if you buy one, there are enough excellent games to play that you'll get use out of it. It's not like when they launched and literally the only thing out was RR7 and Resistance FOM. Over the next year or two, the 3rd party support for both systems will accelerate. I think the PS3 will have much better Japanese support. While they'll both get equal treatment from the North American game developers. A lot of the best games will be multi-platform like GTA IV.

Seeing as the OP wants more of a Media Center than a game system the PS3 is the obvious choice. It's 645 for a PS3 (20 extra for a component or HDMI cable and 25 for the remote, you could get the 20gb if card readers and wifi aren't your priority) and to get a 360 with HDMI support will cost 680. Also the OP said he mainly wants sports games, which are multiplatform as is guitar hero. Also the PS3 has been alot less problematic than the 360. And for a home media center it is much quieter, its annoying hearing the 360's vacuum of a discdrive while trying to watch a DVD (the hd-dvd add on is quieter though, but not as quiet as the PS3).

For the OP i'd think you'd be happy with:

GH II doesn't work on the ps3 I thought. The ps2 version that is. Or did I totally miss the ps3 gh release? I get lost with all these versions.

I don't know but IGN has Guitar Hero PS3 in their upcoming release dates for PS3.

i would agree with this post, and the fact that the xbox360 is pretty loud. I did read however that the 360 will be getting quiter drives in the future.

I have both systems, so you will get an unbiased opinion here. Not that I am saying any of the rest of you are biased. ;)

If your main concern is having a next-gen optical media player, then you should get the PS3. When you add on the cost of an HDDVD drive to the 360, you lose the cost advantage that the 360 has, so that really wouldn't be a factor for you. Whether it is a good idea to bet on one format or the other may be up for debate, but if you want a next-gen movie player now, I think the PS3 is an easy choice. And to be quite honest, BR just seems to be the better format.

Now if games were your main concern, I would say go with the 360 hands down. In the games department, the 360 reigns supreme. And with a look at upcoming releases for each system, it appears it is going to stay that way for some time to come.

They already have one apparently, with the Benq drive, which they have recently begun using in the newely manufactured 360s. I actually haven't heard the Benq drive, so I can't speak on first hand experience, but various articles indicate it's quieter then both the Samsung and Toshiba drives (I believe those are the other two).
