I suggest you do a bit more research before berating MS Defender, it has been beefed up in the past year or so, noob. :p

And I use it because it does not hijack my PC and annoy the fuck out of me like all those "free" 3rd party AV do. I'll say it again, Defender+Malwarebytes+a few 3rd party security apps like Spybot and Adwcleaner is all you need.

Yes, but they are annoying af too so I take a bit less security and less annoyance.

I also have some other AV software that are portable apps but rarely use them. Rootkit scanners, ClamAV, Crypto-prevent software, some for specific viruses, etc. so am fairly safe.

I like to block known bad sites using Spybot. It creates a list of bad sites to block in the Hosts file and keeps the list updated. Preventive maintenance.
 
i dont get why ppl use avast ive said this sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many times if you use another AV for 30 days it always finds stuff that avast never finds ive proving this to all my customers and friends over the past 17 yrs the i tell them to use avg or avira or better go buy kaspersky and send in the rebate and its free after that minus your tax and stamp :p
 
MSE/Malwarebytes/ and ublock chome plugin with some basic common sense browsing.
 
We have been using Microsoft End Point Protection in our Corporate environment for years with SCCM managing it. It has never failed us catching anything yet. And we are using it side by side with Trend OfficeScan which is now run on just the workstations. Trend has failed us many times not catching stuff where SCEP has caught it on the server end after the workstation got infected. LOL. So yes, SCEP does a great job at least in these instances and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

I am however looking for something on our home computers as I have been using Norton lately, and while it's been good, it is buggy. It has not put any noticeable load on the machines either.

Avast and AVG are just fine. I personally don't use them because they've had more than a few updates that completely crash your OS. You'd rather use an antivirus that's been proven to report back to the Kremlin?

Personal opinion? Use Avira.

And yeah, you can deal with rebates that may or may not show up. Avira is free and top-rated.

You might want to have that cough taken care of. Hope it's not a pre-existing condition.

I admit, in these times it does make me a little nervous. It is really a really good package though.

If this is for personal use, you backup regularly and you generally know how to secure your network, your box and avoid the obvious infection routes from daily use you may get by with free scanner/removal tools for the occasional checkup.

Avast/AVG is fine. I stopped recommending them because over the past few months they put out 3-4 updates that were poorly QAd and borked a ton of people's computers. I stick to Webroot or Avira these days, couldn't be happier. Tried out Panda and was pleasantly surprised, but I can't bring myself to use it full time.

Wow... PCWorld just named Norton Suite as the best. Then AVG as best budget, then Windows Defender and Comando I think. I know lists like this always change, but that list is almost painful to read. I know AVG is decent, but best budget still being a paid for AV? What about the free options in that list?

Anywho, I still use bitdefender free.
 
Been using Avast on several computers for years, no viruses yet.

Sophos is excellent, enterprise quality but it has a cost if you want that level.

I recall using them years ago to get rid of a virus nothing else would remove.
 
i mus admit i don use any running AV programs. they slow things down to much when im working with 1-2gb .exe files. instead om a bit more odlfashioned and just scan my stuff regulary. for that i can recommende

malwarebytes. (the odler v2.0 is better fort hsi because its a scanner only
Dr web cure it ( a portalbe one time scanner aka you need to download it everytime as it does not update itself)

In case of paid AV i use Eset so i can recommend it
I also use free Forticlient AV without an actual fortigate devices
and also recently i've installed sophos home premium beta and i'm testing it. So far without a problem. Don't know how good will he be in the long term.
 
I'll add another vote for Sophos Home. It works well, seems very light, and I can check up on my in-laws AV status from their web console. All for free, up to 10 computers.
 
I've been using bit defender for a number of years. It's been great, no problems. I had some problems with Norton in the past.
