Ok here is the problem. I have had the same router for a few years, the Microsoft MN-700. I got it right before MS ditched their networking hardware. It is fully updated with the last firmware MS did.

When I do speedtests with the router, I get around 5000-6000kbps download with around 700kbps upload. My line is from comcast and I do pay for the higher speed 8000/768kbps.

Whe I plug the computer straight into the cable modem, I get anywhere from 9000 to 21000kbps download and around 700kpbs upload.

First off, should a router kill that much download speed? And if yes, are there better routers out there that can handle the speed?

It looks like the MTU size for the router is set smaller than the MTU size your PC is set to.
MTU = Maximum Transfer Unit size and is the size of packets.
If you send packets bigger than those your router has been set to use, it will split them into 2 packets before transmitting them to your modem.
This has the effect of lowering data transfer rates.

You should be able to find the MTU setting in your modem and in your router.
Set the MTU in your router to the same as the MTU in your modem.
