NEC NaviSet - no DDC/CI detected on NEC 2490

Hello all,

Maybe I should just have contacted Art on this forum about this question, but I figure this may need input from other users, as it might turn out not to be caused by my display. Anyways:

I'm using a thinkpad T60p laptop with the "Advanced Dock". I'm using the DVI output on the dock to connect to the DVI-D connector of my NEC LCD2490WUXi. The video card of the T60p is FireGL V5200, the same GPU as the X1600 Radeon. Catalyst driver version: 8.12 OS: Win 7 Pro.

I'm trying to get NEC's NaviSet software to work, but when launching the program, the monitor illustration always displays "NO DDC/CI MONITORS DETECTED".
In the Drop-down box, the 2490 has apparently been detected since it shows up in the list:


The DDC/CI setting in the advanced OSD of the 2490 has been set to "enable".

I have also tested using powerstrip and it extracted the EDID from the LCD2490WUXi flawlessly in real-time (i.e. not from registry). So DDC/CI does work?
Does anyone have any suggestion as to why NaviSet won't work?

The thing is... I really want to buy the SpectraView II package with a screen calibrator, but if NaviSet doesn't communicate with the monitor, SVII software likely won't do that either (?).

EDIT: This is a 2490 bought in Europe.

The 8.12 Catalyst drivers are pretty old. You may want to try newer ones. I don't know if it will help, but it doesn't hurt to try.

I'm not sure if it will help to load the monitor driver as well, but it might.

LCD2490WUXI-BK Vista driver.

Those might be the first things to try and see if NaviSet will work.
 
I also tried with the latest 10.2 (legacy driver pack), but no difference, I'm afraid. I have already installed the display driver.
Using Windows XP mode under Windows 7 doens't give me access to the monitor through DDC/CI it seems, so that's not an option either.

Could this have something to do about a malformed/incorrrect EDID of the 2490? Sometimes, Catalyst control center reports 1280x800 as the maximum supported resolution of the display, but powerstrip is just set to display 1920x1200 at 50 Hz. Somehow, I was never able to get 60 Hz working, but i thought it might have been caused by the fact that my laptop display is only 50 Hz (yes, natively). Any further thoughts?
 
The XP mode problem is expected, as I believe Virtual PC will obfuscate direct hardware access enough to make it a problem.

Is there any driver for the actual dock of the laptop? Maybe that might help....

Otherwise you could try the other DVI-I connector on the monitor. What type of connector is on the laptop directly? VGA?

This is another thing you could try, but no guarantees.

I'll try NaviSet tonight when I return from work on my 2490WUXi2 and 2690WUXi-BK to see if it works for me. If it doesn't that might be good, because SVII has worked without issue on both these screens. Neither of these is a "SpectraView" edition. I do remember having used NaviSet successfully on XP with the 2690 though, as I've owned that screen for over three years.

I've also been able to hardware calibrate my 2490WUXi2-BK with the latest 4.5.5/4.5.6 of Lacie's Blue Eye Pro.

Some progress: I can use NaviSet when using the VGA (15 pin) connector - no problem, it detects the display and lets me select brightness, contrast and whatnot.
Tried switching to the DVI-I port: NaviSet complains that DDC/CI is not available, just as before.

There's no driver for the dock, and on the laptop, there's nothing but a VGA connector (unfortunately).

I'll try to find a different DVI-DVI cable. The sad, sad thing is that the cable i'm currently using is a 5m Lindy premium gold DVI-DVI, and if this turns out to be the culprit (i.e. no DDC/CI connected internally), I'm really gonna get very mad :D
 
Using supplied DVI-D cable from NEC: Still doesn't work on either the DVI-I and DVI-D connectors.

Is it normal that the Native/Preferred timing and detailed timing #1 is 1280x720 only, when using DVI? Could this cause all the confusion? And is it nowmally what the EDID ought to be, when using the DVI ports?

No, neither the timing (1280x720@60hz preferred) nor the DDCI/CI not supported are correct.

I just ran SoftMCCS and it shows both my 2690 and 2490Wuxi2 as DDC/CI supported and 1920x1200@60hz are supported. I'm using a Radeon 5870 on my PC.

I also tried it with my 3008WFP and it also shows DDC/CI supported.

It might be whatever intermediate controller is converting the laptop to DVI is not DDCI/CI compatible or passing through DDC/CI. I can't vouch for what kind of results SVII would give you over VGA.

I can vouch that it will work, though.

Obviously I can't support the use of any other cable than a $100.00 3 foot single-link DVI-D monster cable ;)

I vaguely remember this happening when a certain option was changed. I just checked the manual to refresh my memory, and I think it happened when the "HDCP Content" option was enabled in the advanced menu (#7). If I remember correctly, the 2490 supports HDCP regardless of the option, so that option should be disabled when using it with a computer. See if that helps.

Turned it on with the 2690Wuxi and it showed the same issue as tk-don, but it also went to 1280x720 and wouldn't go any higher.

Setting HDCP Content to off fixed the issue - NaviSet now works as expected. I must have enabled it at some stage. The EDID information also became the same as when using VGA.

Thanks a lot for all the help. Wonder why this HDCP content setting must be so different. They appear to be stored in a HDCP controller and separate from the rest of the system, but still... :)
