NEC MultiSync® LCD20WGX2 Vs Asus MW221U

The Asus looks like a great monitor on paper but I've not yet been able to find any decent reviews of it other than "OMG this monitor is teh roxors my soxors", so on that note if one of your options is the NEC just go with that. It's a proven awesome monitor time and time again.

Any Asus users in the house? I'll be ordering either on Tuesday so I'd appreciate all the feedback I can get.

I got back to the Netherlands yesterday and picked up my new NEC 20WGX2 that was delivered to work while I was in th UK for Xmas. Wow this monitor is amazing, I had a laptop screen before this with a glossy screen but it was nothing compared to this. It has so much punch with the contrast and colour it's stunning. One thing I would say to painters/photographers is that although the blacks are better than most other LCDs it's still not close to the accuracy of a CRT with those last few black levels =(.

I'm not just basing my opinion of this screen on a laptop screen btw, I've also had Dell S-IPS screens and the old Dell 2405FPW. I also use a Samsung 20" LCD at work at the moment which is a complete joke compared to the NEC, this thing is amazing. Just a pitty about the lack of height / rotate adjust on the stand =(

Have you tried calibrations yet artmonkey? As nice as it can look out of the box it tweaks up in ways I didn't expect. I first posted that I though the Dell S-PVA was blacker - then I used someone elses calibrations and was really surprised about the noticable improvements.

One reviewers calibrations:

He has mentioned using some other calibrations here -including having brightness set at
6.2 (contrat at 97%) which would not have thought to try since my other monitors could NOT do that.

In any event, I easily detect all but one bar on this test below - but I can get last bar too if I want to skew other setting to do so (and I don't)

Presently I am on 14% brightness 82% contrast and 16.6 sharpness. I have used colors ettings mentioned above. I'm still playing and change settings for varied uses.

I'm leaning towards the NEC as it's a guaranteed good buy, you've got till Tuesday to pursued me otherwise Asus users (if there is any)

I'm just wondering how important having a HDCP compliant DVI port is? I've been pretty sure I'd buy the NEC but that doesn't support HDCP where as the Asus and the Samsung 215TW does.

I'm actually pretty worried now that'll I'll make the wrong choice and end up with a £350 heap of **** which is definitely not what I want. I've done allot of research but I get mixed feelings on all the models I've been watching closely.

Any help would be awesome, I really don't want to get a stinker.

the NEC does have HDCP btw, its been confirmed by NEC customer service and travbomb here in forums, who works for NEC. Also its not a very good comparison, the Asus uses a TN panel but NEC uses a AS-IPS panel. The NEC has been tested to be able to match the TNs 2ms response time although it has a more conservative 6ms on paper (behardware). The NEC has a glossy screen, better viewing angles, and better color reproduction than the TN. As for the samsung, PVAs are pretty good but I hate having to gamble if it has input lag or not and I'm kind of biased towards the NEC, just sold it and miss it already (got a 37" westinghouse thats going to take its place). I'm using a Samsung 244T until the westy comes and as long as I dont play FPS games its a good monitor for all other uses. I havent actually heard of anyone with the 215TW complaining too much about input lag but after spending 1200 on the 244T and experiencing input lag im just too cautious about PVAs now.

Edit: heres a excerp from the behardware review that Sodar posted. It really depends what you what, size, quality, cost. You should decide from there, if you can afford the NEC then i guess budget isnt a issue.
"a big monitor as fast as possible, the Asus MW221u is the next reference for its kind. Reaction time is comparable to the Nec MultiSync 20WGX² with two more inches and a price 100€ less… this is a bargain! Also, the design and the finishing touches of the monitor are really nice. The most important drawback compared to the NEC is the viewing angles are like most TNs very narrow, especially the vertical ones. Compared to the other 22"s, it’s just unfortunate that colors are so inaccurate."

Thanks, and yes, I can afford the NEC. I'd rather spend an extra 50 notes and get the best as long as it is in fact the best.

Looking at the quote the only drawbacks are viewing angels and incorrect colours but you gain 2" and some features, my question is will I actually even be able to notice the difference in colours or is this one of those things "normal" users don't notice without really trying to see it.

And I'm very interested in a link where the NEC is confirmed to have HDCP support as on every site I've read it says no HDCP support, if the NEC definitely does have HDCP supports that's a big plus.

I use the computer allot, mainly my time is spent browsing or in World of Warcraft with the occasional movie viewing and a blast of Doom 3, Fear or Hitman once in a while.

My advice, don't get the Asus. ppl seem to have a lot of trouble getting the colours right and the overdrive seems to cause halo effect. If you want a 22" WS monitor soon, go for one of cmo based panels, such as the Acer or Chimei 22" until a better non-TN panel comes out.

ppl are pretty happy with the Chimei (in AUS), the build quality is not as good as samsung but the panel is ok.

I am sticking with my 19" until a good TN is released.

BeHardware hated the NEC's Opticlear (I mean hated it) and I had dismissed the NEC at one time because of it. Since I ended up getting the NEC I can't imagine how they could have been so biased against it because the performace I saw in person and in other reviews had almost no relation to the BeHardware review at all. I could understand people having a preference for anti-glare but they basically assaulted the whole notion anyone wouldn't use it at all. Since I see gloss screens on almost all the new laptops when I visit Circuit City there must be some reasons.

Glossy screens are not so hot for a brightly-lit office environment. If the reviewers were using that sort of environment, that'd be why.
