"32 bit" is indeed just 24 bit (8 bits per channel) plus an extra channel (which isn't used to display colors). You may want to look it up for more information.

Bottom line is that what Windows calls "32 bit", is actually just 24 bits. So this monitor can display all the colors you need.
 
Still can't set any refresh over 61 hz with windows 7 and the latest nvidia drivers. Tried powerstrip and nvidia control panel with the posted settings and nothing will work :mad:

anybody else have luck getting 72hz or 74.6?
 
Soo my 5970 is installed and I am driving my NEC EA231wmi and Dell SX2210 TN both through the DVI. The DVI mode seems more responsive with the Dell. Even on startup, the boot info updates more quickly on the Dell. It's noticeable. Not sure what this says about the input lag/responsiveness of the NEC.

Also I just got my displayport cable in from Monoprice. It's a 10 foot minidisplayport to displayport cable. In my Eyefinity setup, I plan on running the DP monitor furthest away from the computer so I got the longer cable. I'll try it out and report if it makes a difference in responsiveness vs DVI. Oh and the cable is white. =( I think they thought they were selling a cable to an apple user. Weird. But oh well, no biggie.

Update: When running 2 monitor Eyefinity, the NEC, set as primary, has flickering and lack of sharpness in 2d mode. In 3d mode however it appears to have about the same responsiveness and sharpness as the Dell. Weird...

Hi all.

I recently purchased the NEC EA231WMi. I'm very happy with it and very impressed! I have a CRT sitting right next to it, and the text and image shapness on the new NEC is better to my surprise. :)

I was glad I did my research and chose it over the Dell U2410 as that one has issues with brightness control since it's an H-IPS. I noticed previosily that the HP LP2475w is also an H-IPS and people in the NewEgg reviews state it has issues with brightness control as well.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has tested the difference between DVI and Displayport on this NEC monitor yet? I'm using it with a Displayport 1.1 cable and a workstation card (ATI FirePro v8700), but haven't had any extra time yet to test the differences between the two.

Me too. I'm thinking about three of these for an Eyefinity setup. Would the images and colour/brightness be similar across all 3 screens if two are using DVI and one Displayport?

A different review suggested that there were brightness differences when viewed at an angle and I was wondering how 3 of these would look. I thought this monitor was supposedly very good with angles?

after testing this screen I would have to agree that toasty was right this screen is incredible .... after calibrating again and doing some test I put it head to head with the 20wmgx again

1. no gloss , but anti glare NOT noticeable
2. no display driver available from nec
3. needs a lot of calibrating to really enjoy , bright and greenish at startup
4. all this auto crap needs to be turned off

Hey, real 7, would you say that the NEC EA231WMi is better or equal to the image quality on the 20WMGX2?

I would have to honestly say its probably better its seems to be more accurate in colors white is whiter vs the 20mgx2 has a slight yellowish white , the only thing the 20WMGX2 has is the glossy screen which is really no biggie , cause this screen holds it blacks so well and beats 20WMGX2

DVI vs DP input doesn't seem to make a big difference, but I prefer to use the DP input. On the 5970 it seems like secondary monitors tend to get flicker, and if you use DP+DVI in a certain sequence, the flicker goes to my other monitor instead of the NEC. I'm thinking this is a driver issue with 5000 series and multimonitors cos it also happened with my 5870 at certain OC settings.
 
based on the positive reviews here i ordered mine today, it should be here within the next week.

what are recommended setting for good color reproduction ?

Ill give you some tips that could of saved me a ton of time
Put on dynamic setting so the eco garbage get's turned off if left on it will change your monitor to match brightness of scene , every time I opened up Google my desktop would get bleached out , then when i closed the screen would get dark

I set my brightness to 19 - 21 and my contrast to 50 but had to use windows calibrate for gamma and color to get the greenish out but came str8 really easy

after I put side to side with my 20wmgx playing a movie in the middle , the new one looked way better ?

Great post and pictures, very informative- thanks! Not every EA231WMi will be identical, but this sets a baseline expectation. There is a very slight tint issue evident in your gray screen, but it is minor (IMHO).

Those cables only work when the TV / Monitor can accept Component signals over the VGA port. Normally, VGA passes RGBHV, not Component. According to a post by ToastyX, this monitor will not accept Component over the VGA input. You would have to buy an active Component -> VGA box which can go for $50-$100 (usually including a cable). Note that Component -> VGA and VGA -> Component devices are not the same, but some of the more expensive converters work in both directions.
 
I've been thinking about getting this monitor for awhile and right now its on buy.com for $332 shipped. Since the market for IPS displays in at this price level is pretty much nonexistent, how do you guys expect the price to change over the next 6 months or so? TN prices have plummeted since I bought my Benq G2400WD TN panel last year, but I have a feeling something like this won't. I don't really *need* a dual monitor set up right now but... I could argue that for anything!

ive heard prices will go up cuase nec will present a 2010 monitors but take advantage now trust me
 
Actually, that second cable looks like a converter, so it should work. It won't be high def. The Wii can only output 480i and 480p.
 
I ordered one on Buy for $304 and free shipping. It's for my wife who uses multiple screens in portrait mode for a lot of spreadsheet work. The view angles of some TN screens frustrate her and I've been looking for a price-effective alternative. If this display works out the low price point will allow me to replace her whole array much sooner (she kinda insists that the screens all be the same ... her need for an orderly environment). <fingers crossed>

Personally, I'd recommend the Vdigi vga cable for hooking up a Wii to a monitor. Works great for me.

I gave in and just ordered one from buy.com for the $304. This will be my first LCD screen. My 15" CRT is around 10 years old or so and its been bothering my eyes lately. I've been holding off on getting an LCD for so long because of all the stories about crappy colors, gray blacks, bad uniformity, etc. I spend most of my time painting in photoshop so those things are important to me. My sister "upgraded" to an LCD a couple years ago and I don't know how she can stand to do post processing work with her photography on that thing. (Its a TN screen and there is a very noticeable hue and value shift regardless of how centered your head is.) Hopefully the EA231WMi won't be a huge letdown from CRTs. Looking forward to having the extra space off to the sides for the toolbars in photoshop.

Why would the selling vendor or even a second hand monitor change the warranty ? I didn't see any terms about the seller on NECs site, got a link?

I once had a NEC LCD monitor bought from overstock.com. When I requested a warranty service from NEC (they did asked for purchase receipt), I was told overstock is not NEC authorized reseller and they refused warranty coverage because of that.
