The NEC looks to pretty, though! Since the monitor is going to be used for years, it makes sense to spend a lot on it if it's going to be a lot better than some of the cheaper monitors. Have you tried the NEC for gaming? How would you compare it to the Dell (in games)?
I don't really game. In fact, just for shizzles and giggles I recently bought the Holiday Pack of Half-Life. It looked great to me but I never saw a game on another monitor. I don't play much and in my case the game should be titled "Major Fracture".
To be honest I had the S-PVA version of the Dell 2007wfp - I got the NEC after returning Dell. Dvd's were awful on that version of 2007wfp. Watching "March of the Penguins" was impossible because all details in dark areas couldn't be seen. The same movie was gorgeous on the NEC. I like the remote too because it calibrates monitor so no need to fuss with little buttons on bezel like Dell. If you don't mind the extra cost I would say get the NEC because you'll probably want to do more than game someday.
