NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

If I start working again soon, I'll be down to buy one. I've been lurking in this thread since october and I'm impressed with the progress.

A few pages back there was discussion about the company name, ncase is perfect for me. It has the word case in it, which is straight to the point and tells the casual observer that it is a -case- company.

for what its worth, I read ncase as "n" (like the variable) case. Since there's many plays on how its read (like necere's case, or encase like explained) is pretty neat but the fact that people get the picture quickly is what's important. Besides, it sounds professional, moreso than some of the other names

Actually we decided to stay with the current name after all, which I guess we neglected to mention. The other name I had in mind is decent, but I realized maybe not quite the right fit for this project.

I'd be surprised if they can get get below $200 but I am hoping and rooting for it. :)

The name of the case was fine for me too. M1 is nice and simple, and coincides with the style of the case. If my friends ask what kind of case it is, its simply "M1, by NCASE," rather than something like "dRagOn fi3R, by Duos Machina"

I kind of like M1 because it brings to mind the naming scheme used for most weapons in Mass Effect.

I'm very excited about the design and willing to purchase maybe a couple of them, however i have a concern regarding the PSU.

I'm not really clear if it's possible to acomodate a standard ATX size PSU, since on the first page actually mentions it, but later on says it would be "DIY bussiness"

Will it support any standard sized PSU?
Should I need to modify somehow the case/mounting/bracket ?

Thanks in advance.

I assume you're talking about this post of mine.

The reason for the discrepancy is that initially the design only supported SFX power supplies, but after ATX was suggested I got to thinking about it and realized it wouldn't be too difficult to make another bracket that supports ATX that could be swapped in. We're also using a different, lower-profile angle plug that affords a little more space. That post I made predates the info in the first post since W360 keeps it updated with the most current configuration.

To directly answer your question, it supports non-modular ATX power supplies up to 140mm long - anything longer will interfere with the PCIe card. If you're using a shorter card (< ~190mm), it's possible modular and/or longer PSUs will fit.

I'm typing as hard and fast and lovingly as I can, W360 and Necere. Should have an email for you guys with a Word doc later today, computer god willing. ;)

That's above and beyond, mark, really. I pretty much figured I was going to end up writing it myself, and I've got enough to do already with revising the design and doing renders, so your help is greatly appreciated.

Sent a first draft, have fun with it. You guys plan on doing a little video of the prototype render with a voiceover? :)

What about straight aluminum or dark gun metal?

Gun Metal would be BADASS, but Im perfectly ok with black also. I do not want a silver box on my desk.. family would bring up a certain other brand of computer named after a fruit...

Ok, lets rock a vote for Gun Metal
Bare aluminum is easy. So is black. Please define gunmetal.

"Gunmetal" is too loose a term. Some people will want a light gray, some will want a dark gray and some will want a blue gray.

When people want bare aluminum, they get one color.

When people want black aluminum, they get one color.

Dark grey or black. Silver I would have to paint :p

EDIT: dark green would be sweet, but I am just dreaming :)

Can it be black anodized aluminum, and not painted?

Or even better, black outside, and blue inside, like this:

(I know that is asking for too much, but it would be cool!)

this wont be painted right? if its made by a real manufacturer they will probably either powder coat or anodize it i would think. if i recall lian li usually anodizes their cases.

true there are some liberties taken with that name. when someone says black, everyone knows what black is. now there might be different kinds of black, like matte/glossy etc. but most people will agree what black is.

gunmetal is a trickier one. i've seen it from dark grey, to grey-green, to grey-blue tint. i'm not sure but maybe there is an 'official' hexadecimal number for gunmetal, or an RGB code for gunmetal.

ps. anyone know what holds up better? painting or anodizing?

iirc anodizing turns a very small outer layer to an extremely hard materiel almost as hard as diamond, but it can come off depending on the conditions (the aluminum under is still soft). If compared to a quality paint, it should be down to how its taken care of. Cheap paint, anodizing will outlast.

Anodizing results in a hardened surface. Not anywhere near diamond hard, but much harder than the original aluminum. It will hold up to wear and tear better than wet paints. Powder coating generally falls in between anodizing and wet paint.

anodizing is much sturdier than paint. anodizing can scratch pretty easily, but wont chip and wont wear thin. you can put a couple clear coats over paint to make it more durable, but then youre about 3 or 4 coats in (primer, first coat, 2nd coat, clear coat) and youre increasing paint cost and labor cost. powder coating is a little bit expensive i think but can be pretty cost effective if done in bulk. it actually bakes the paint onto the metal, causing it to harden. it is also thicker than a normal spray-on coat. i would prefer powder coat>anodized>paint.

Just remember the cautionary tale of Lan Gear WRT powdercoating/paint... it shot all their clearances to shit. Anodizing is the way to go :)

Plan is and has always been sandblast+anodize.

brushed anodized or just regular? the brushed looks SO NICE but i think it's probably not worth it if it adds any cost. also, scratches in anodized black can usually be covered up really easily with a sharpie.

What is there story? Link?

Also, sandblasted anodized finish will finish will look sick. Brushed is another good alternative. But either work for most tastes. Good choice Necere/W360.

Sandblasted + Anodized is sexy. Reminds me of the initial run of the Qmicra. Biggest mistake I made was selling my case. :(

Looking forward to picking one of these up, wish there was more expandability as far as 3.5" drives go as I'd love to use this as a nice with 4-6 HDD's but I understand every square inch counts.

With 2 of those side panel brackets, you can get 4 drives on the side and another 1-2 on the base of the case, assuming you don't need a massive CPU cooler.

Indeed, that is possible, although we don't have any specific plans to offer extra HDD cages.

Just so you guys know, it's probably going to take a little bit to get the crowdfunding campaign setup. I know some of you are chomping at the bit here. Patience ;)

Id rather it be done right than faster with complications that will delay it anyway.

I was thinking of hard anodizing, which is nearly as hard as diamond.

sand blasted and black anodizing sounds pretty good to me.

Yeah, when W360 posted the list of what you guys need to get done, I'm hoping for a release by 2013Q4, or around Christmas time.
