A virus has been detected on several laptops being used at the space station. NASA is downplaying the incident but anyone that knows anything recognizes this as the beginning of a hostile invasion of our planet by an advanced alien race trying to destroy life as we know it…oh yeah, and they want to steal our WoW account information too.

NASA downplayed the news, calling the virus mainly a "nuisance" that was on non-critical space station laptops used for things like e-mail and nutritional experiments. NASA declined to name the virus, but SpaceRef.com, which broke the story, reported that the worm was W32.Gammima.AG worm -- a worm first detected in August 2007 that installs software that steals credentials for online games.

I knew being an astronaut was cool, but the latency must be hell for WoW up there

And everyone thought the gold farmers were from China.

Dude, seriously, how hard is it for the multi million (billion?) dollar space industry to install a friggin' antivirus on their laptops? Hell, AVG is free! Idiots. Seriously. The IT department should be chastised for this, there's just no excuse.

I use WinClam on my computers, it's open source so it's always free. I knew that they were doing biological research in space, yet does this mean that they are also testing computer viruses in spaces as well;)

The better question is how did the virus get there in the first place. Virus's (virii?) typically aren't a problem for completely legitimate users...

Looks like someone doesn't have 'the right stuff' lol

Guess next time they'll take my advice as well as many others and use NOD32. :D

And the plural form of the word virus is viruses, just for the record.

spoke too soon

The worm checks if it has been injected into any of the following processes:

* zhengtu.dat
* elementclient.exe
* dekaron.exe
* hyo.exe
* wsm.exe and ybclient.exe
* fairlyclient.exe
* so3d.exe
* maplestory.exe
* r2client.exe
* InphaseNXD.EXE

It then attempts to steal sensitive information for the following online games:

* ZhengTu
* Wanmi Shijie or Perfect World
* Dekaron Siwan Mojie
* HuangYi Online
* Rexue Jianghu
* ROHAN
* Seal Online
* Maple Story
* R2 (Reign of Revolution)
* Talesweaver

ok.. I laughed

wonder what their pings are like from space for WoW? :p

Must be getting a damn good signal off neighbouring satellites for a Wi-Fi connection;)

Yes you read correct-the AGSIS Guided Missle Crusiers of the USN use Windows NT to run all the ships Command ,Control and Fire Systems. But as a Mate of mine who is Network Manager and still uses same (NT) , says its bullit proof and is probably the most secure WIN ops system out there-Still Makes you wonder though.

The shuttle itself still ( I belive) use 4 x 486 cpus which run concurrently and take a vote on every action, If one cpu dosnt tally with the others they shut it out. Hope they have their AVG loaded

All this reminds me of the story of the MIG 25 Foxbat that that America got from a defecting pilot back in the seventies and the hight of the cold war. This was a real coup as the Mig 25 was the top Soviet interceptor with incredible rates of climb to 100,00 ft and a top speed ( 2000mph for about 10 minutes or so)). The Russians demanded it back and eventually got it-in boxes after it had been stripped to check out the tech inside.

Soviet fighter jet engines were the equal if not better than the Wests at the time but the real shock was the electronics and radar. The radar could fry a steak at a mile it was so powerfull and all the electronic were solid state and Vacumn tube technology.

Every one thought this was hilarious 50s and 60s tech in a 70s state of the art fighter until someone pointed out that the plane was immune to EMP-electro manetic pulse-given off by a nuclear weapeon (now we have e-bombs which do the same thing).

This was at a time when over 30,000 soviet main battle tanks sat on the Warsaw pact border with Europe ready to roll across. The Neutron bomb was developed to cope with this threat as it would fry the occupant of the tanks etc with very high neutron flux and have very little colatteral blast damage and residual radiation-a clean nuke in other words.

Jimmey Carter banned the further development of them as they messed up the policy of MAD-mutually assured destruction which to this day still exists-the concept that a nuke war was not winnable due to the fallout etc that would afflict mankind for generations- that is what would be left of it if every body let loose. Neutron bombs brought the possiblitly of low scale nuke skirmishs with out escalation to full on nuking.

I have a WoW account in deep freeze. Has several characters spread over different servers, and altogether they might have 1/2 a million credits. If the "Aliens" want to make a reasonable offer ....

Oh! But part of the deal has to be that they hold off on taking over the rest of the planet for at least 40 more years. :D

Sounds like someone got lonely up there and decided to look up some porn and contracted a virus instead.

Does antivirus work without gravity? :p

Where's Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum? They should be able to hack into an alien space station and introduce a similar virus in order to counter-attack them. Just have to make sure everyone is running Windows 95 or else it will STILL work.

Hey, a nuetron bomb will irridate and activate the hell out of ANYTHING exposed to the neutron flux. That makes it MORE dangerous than a regular nuke warhead. Carter, beiung a nuclear reactor officer knew this as well. So talk all you want I think you have some facts wrong, and possibly even more than just that.

But...NASA has NEVER had a good security record. They even lost their TOP Unix expert to a couple of 16 or so year old hackers back in the day...remember that?

No surprise that laptops anywhere could be infected, and especially when dealing with Russians onboard. They could have even done it to steal technology themselves. There is no limit to the KGB influence from Moscow.

Try as I might, I cannot find a point in this post.

Given we all can be rectal exam'd at airport security at any moment, how exactly would NASA allow anyone with a laptop onto a Shuttle without it thoroughly being "debugged"?

I will not use this as an opportunity to point out the utterly abysmal leadership and incompetence of NASA's managment over the last 30 years. No, I won't, and you can't make me. :cool:

What amazes me is the fact that they're running Windows. :eek:
hah, they are just non-critical non-system related laptops for the crew to use. For a lot of their crucial systems, they use VAS in conjunction with RISC architecture, or some proprietary built and coded machines.
