so my problem is, i formatted my hard drive and then i lost my windows cd so i have a copy of ubuntu sitting around so wanted to try it out, i tried it and im using it now, and i dont understand anything! i just want to know how to install AIM and Limewire and the basics, if someone could point me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it( im running ubuntu 5.04 for intel x86)

I would use gaim, but since you like aim, here you go. Assuming you have all the dependancies, it should work out fine:

1. Download the latest Debian version of AIM, and store it in a place you recognize: http://www.aim.com/get_aim/linux/latest_linux.adp#install

2. Open a command shell

3. At the prompt, type:
sudo dpkg -i filename.deb
replace "filename.deb" with the file name and path of the deb file you downloaded; If you don't want to type in the whole path, you can drag and drop the file onto the open shell window and do a paste.

4. Press "Enter" and wait. That should do it.

The easiest way to install software in ubuntu(for people who don't know what they are doing, at least) is to use synaptic. Once in synaptic you can browse or search for software you want to install, and then it downloads and installs it for you. Ubuntu 5.04 is an older version, so when you're in synaptic you'll probably want to do an update. This will probably result in at least a few hundred megs of downloads, though, but it'll give you a fairly up-to-date system.

One of the great things about ubuntu is the amount of user documentation out there. The following sites have a great deal of information:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/
http://ubuntuforums.org/
http://ubuntuguide.org/

Ubuntuguide.org is a bit out of date, so I'd probably check the wiki and the forums first.

You don't need to install anything for AIM, because Gaim should be pre-installed. It's a better client anyway.
