My realization of how much a drug WoW actually is.

That is only an excuse. You're telling us that you have nothing better to do, like doing something more intellectual to enlighten yourself rather than play an online game?

I agree however, making a generalization that all WoW players are fat, is an ignorant statement.

Um, I didn't say all WoW players are fat...

Oh WoW. I'd dabbled in MMOs before. Played EverQuest for a month or so. Ragnarok Online a little bit. Ultima Online for a free month, because Ultima 9 sucked so hard I got it free when they shipped out the patched install CD. I even dicked around in FFXI for depressingly long but the punishing nature of it drove me away.

But man, WoW hit me like a ton of bricks. Thankfully I was still in college then and could get away with spending too much time on it. Although I definitely skipped too many classes just so I could stay around in my apartment and play WoW. The people I played with became more important to me than my friends. I definitely hit rock bottom. I hate to admit this, but I even had a relationship with this girl I knew in WoW, even flew out to see her a few times. Sad, sad, sad. Feel like I should scrub myself down with steel wool whenever I think about it. When she started ignoring me and "dating" some other WoW guy, it finally hit me just how damned pathetic I was.

Cancelled WoW. Started working out. Focused more on school and work. Fixed things up with my real friends. These days I'm in kick ass shape, took up martial arts a little bit, eat a lot healthier, have a great job, and still look back on that time I played WoW with nothing but disgust. I guess I started playing WoW when it first came out, and stuck with it about a year. So I guess it was about 2 years ago I quit. Good riddance.

Everything you do in paragraph 3, I do. I still play WoW too. Amazing huh? :)

EDIT: no martial arts, but i exercise a lot in my free time to stay in shape.

actually you can. i bunked on one of my online friends couch when i moved to NYC. i have a ton of online friends like a few hours away so actually yeah you can. so again, it is relative.

Most people don't have that relationship with people they meet online... because of the plain and simple fact that you don't ACTUALLY know that person. You know how you hear things on the news about people pretending to be someone else on the internet and crazy things happening? It actually happens... I will have friendly chats with ones I meet in an online game, I've been in a couple guilds/clans in the many games I've played online, but I would never try and form these strong bonds of unions with people I meet online... I have friends I can actually be around in real life, have face-to-face conversations, have a beer, watch a movie, play sports with.... I wouldn't trade that for ANY online friends I could ever meet.

But that's just my personal opinion. I think the internet is nice for information, playing games, and keeping up with friends I have that don't live near me anymore.... Not for finding my soul-mate or meeting my new best friend

but you can actually be around those people in real life and it be the same thing. our clan gets together often and plays drunken darts as someone's house in the US a few times a year.

don't get me wrong. i have the horror stories of meeting people online and i will forever wear the scar mentally and physically but at the same time, i have met some of my best friends online, even the love of my life. for me, i travel a lot and it is wonderful to be able to step into any major city in the world for the most part and have someone there that actually gives a damn.

my local friends just want loans all the time and come drink up my wine and dig in my fridge which is why i have cut most of them to a minimum. sometimes taking that familiar commonplace factor out of it may be helpful because you actually have a chance to miss someone.

As far as there being a lot of nuts cases on line, sure there are but those same nut cases go to grocery stores and the mall just like the people in your local town so what is the difference really?

i think somebody should take a log of how many hours per week they spend doing various activities.

i.e. 10 hours playing WoW
40 hours working
20 hours schooling
50 hours sleeping. etc

i think somebody should take a log of how many hours per week they spend doing various activities.

i.e. 10 hours playing WoW
40 hours working
20 hours schooling
50 hours sleeping. etc

Let's see what I do......

40 hours working
25 hours schooling
42 hours sleeping
35 hours misc (playing with dogs, eating, watching tv, reading, planning wedding etc.)
8 hours commuting
So that gives me approximately 150 hours a week I am doing other things than WoW and actually last night was the first time I logged on since April 24th and I played for a total of 3 hours.

So since there is 168 hours in a week (24*7=168) and I spend 150 hours doing other things that means that I would only be spending approximately 10% of my week playing WoW, that is that I HAVE 10% of my week available to play WoW. And actually lately I have been spending more time with the fiance than anything, been out bbq'ing, yard work, smoking some cigars etc.

Why talk about time spent in World of Warcraft? Why not just talk about time spent on hobbies in general? Because it is really the same thing. In my free time when I am bored I play WoW. If not WoW it would likely be some other game.

You're telling us that you have nothing better to do, like doing something more intellectual to enlighten yourself rather than play an online game

You never play video games? then why are you on this forum? Every game you play no matter what it is is equally a waste of time from that perspective. So unless every free second you have is devoted to "enlightening yourself intellectually" you have no room to talk.

People who play WoW in their free time have no problem, and anyone who passes judgment on them while playing other games in their own free time is a hypocrite.

Well said, I wanted to see what/where my time was spent and actually I do not play as much as I thought. Lately, I have been playing other games and actually playing Super Mario Word with my fiance'. Damn that was a fun game just cant remember how to beat all the star roads.

i would say the problem comes in when the game goes outside of the spare time....

like sleeping for a hour...calling in to play.....not leaving the house for several days...but thats any addiction.

Free time is relative, and many people are going to conveniently give themselves more of it.

Exactly, which means this can only be discussed on a case by case basis and you cannot generalize and say that anyone who plays WoW for more than x hours a day is addicted.

It is pathetic if someone gets addicted to WoW, but there is no reason to generalize and say that all people who play WoW are fat pathetic losers with no life. That's quite possibly the most ignorant thing I have ever heard.

I don't even think I came close to saying that.

For me, it wasn't WoW, it was Dark Age of Camelot. I'd never really played an MMO before, a couple closed betas, but nothing on-going. I totally did not buy the idea that such a game could be addictive. DAoC seemed to be the same as the others I'd tried, except the first time I logged in, a more experienced player messaged me and basically walked me through how to play. I soon discovered a mind and personality a lot like mine, and we hit it off, as friends. I spend endless hours playing and BS'ing around with him. This coupled with the need for one more artifact, one more master level, one more realm rank really made things bad.

For about a year, I did nothing but play. I went to my classes most of the time, and actually did fairly well, but as soon as I got home, it was time to play until I went to sleep, usually around 3-4am. Wake up for class around 7, rinse and repeat. I did homework between classes. Food was anything that I could get and eat quickly at the keyboard, junk food or veggies, it not matter. I am prone to getting migraines, and I can say that all the stress I put myself under for the game didn't help matters at all, and I would have them 3 or 4 days straight. But I was so addicted that I often played through the migraines, not even taking pain pills because they make me foggy-headed. What a miserable existence that was! I grew very impatient and mean, online and off, because of the constant migraines, lack of sleep and the stress of running raids.

Finally one day, it really hit home that this was utterly pathetic and not what I wanted with my life. I quit, even though I still had 4 months left on my subscription. I kept it installed, too, but as I slowly picked up the pieces of my life, it mattered less and less, and every time I logged in, I started thinking about how pointless it was to try to do anything in the game. Once I saw that it has no point at all, I knew I was pretty much cured. I have tried out multiple MMOs since then, even WoW, and once I get over the "hey, this is neat" phase, I think about all that needs to be done to get anywhere in the game, and that will stop me playing pretty quickly.

Now I have more time for my other nerdy and non-social interests. :p

No addiction is pathetic. It's something that happens. I reminds us that we are human and sometimes lack the control to make sound decisions but that doesn't make anyone pathetic IMO.

It's no different from you cigarette smokers, or nymphomaniacs, or even the porn addicts. Don't frown on people for playing WoW while you sip your 7th shot of bourbon popping ephedrine. Come off it and stop acting perfect.

(Not directed at anyone in particular.....just venting on the "holier than thou"s)

Does anyone go through with drawls from not playing WoW? Can't sleep, no appetite, irritability, nervousness, etc... I mean technically isn't addiction defined as something that causes some with drawl effects on the person? I mean that is why marijuana is not classified as addictive right?

Withdrawal is a side effect of trying to quit. Addiction does not include trying to break it.

So...no.

I think someone needs to ask the question, in this WoW addition thread.. did anyone ever suck any dick for WoW..? (/me thinks of movie: Half Baked...) I mean.. there's addiction.. then there's addiction.. which brings on a whole other level of self compromise.. whew.

well, right.. it would have to be sort of indirectly.. but gotsa pay the bills somehow.. etc.. *sigh* ok, maybe a slightly misguided question.. but where there's addiction there's self compromise.. how far are people willing to go to keep playing their game? or something like that..

edit: watch Half Baked also.. there a scene in a NA meeting.. anyways.. it's sort of a joke... but sort of a serious question also..

Nope.. just a little sleep deprivation.. was up all night playing games. ;) :p

yeah sleep deprivation is worse than being baked but i think sacrificing health for gaming (so guilty of this) is about the equivalent of going downtown to play. it is an addiction, but no worse than others.

a gamers hangover! I think that almost deserves a cooler (a gameover? hrm..) name and a wiki entry. or at least a spot in the urban dictionary. ;)

FYI, I like wheatgrass for lost sleep feeling.. it really helps..

i dont even sleep anymore. i just fall comatose around 3 am. i havent passed out at my keyboard in a month or so...i do need something because i'm usually zombiefied at work until 11am and i get there at 9.

a little OT, but hopefully someone might find some useful info in it..

Well... I intially sought out the wheatgrass cure for loss of sleep due to my diabetic + anemic cat who kept me up, aside from the late night gaming, for several months on end.. meaning, maybe 4 hours of broken sleep a night.. or so.. I tried caffiene in just about all forms, and it works for a while, but after a while it just made me feel like shit.. so I went the other direction. healthy! I found for my system 4oz of wheatgrass was able to counter about 4 hours of lost sleep a night.. well, if I took it on an empty stomach and let if aborb for like 30 mins before having any food.. so I did this for months.. from like sept 2006 until jan 2007.. it really saved my ass from being zombified all the time.. but like anything you get used to it.. so I would add green tea or matcha shots or whatever to my regiment.. and it worked for me.. anyways, I slowly was able to get his issues under control (home testing + tight diet/insulin regulation plus iron suppliments for the anemia) and he stopped bugging me all night.. it was a very trying experience but I am much wiser for the wear... like everything else.

Anyways.. so realized, hey I can make it on 4 hours of sleep.. which means I can game a lot more.. lol (wiser for the what??..). so do the math on that one.. I now take 4oz of wheatgrass just about every morning.. when I can find it fresh.. I am lucky to work very near a Jamba Juice in down town SF.. green tea is nice also.. I sip it all morning.. and for emergency purposes I also keep a supply of "5 hour energy" in my back-pack.. which tastes like ass, but it does it's job well.. if I am really wiped I use that... it works best if you only use it once in a long while.. and well.. I try and eat sorta kinda well.. no fast food, no junk food, no sodas... with the exception of salt and vinegar lays stacks and anything goes when I am at the movies. :)

this is my game hard work hard diet.. might not work for everyone, but it does for me.

Yeah when I was in high school and the beginning of college I found that I could literally "zombie" my way through the day with atleast 2 hours of good sleep. But that usually involved about a pot or two of coffee and multiple caffeine drinks (talk about an addiction). After awhile my body began to build up an immunity to the caffeine and it began to take more and more. I tried to lay off it but would get massive headaches and begin to shake at points (depending on how long I had been without). This was an addiction in the utmost sort.

Eventually I was able to ween myself back to a soda or two a day and maybe a cup or two of coffee in the morning. However, during this time of my life I was working as a truck loader/warehouse worker and was probably in some of the best shape of my life, hence the large amounts of caffeine got used up. Well now I lead a bit of a sedentary lifestyle as I have a desk job and spend 4+hrs a night doing homework on my computer. Well as you can guess, the constant sodas, bad eating and coffee have taken their toll on my body and I have a nice "buddha" to lay claim to it.

Anyways, I have started to lay off the caffeine only drinking one, maybe two small cups of coffee a day with water and a large glass of Green Tea to occuppie the rest of the day. I am not much of a morning person and have a bit of a sensitive stomach. So how does your stomach react to the WheatGrass in the morning? I am interested in trying just about anything as I have recently gotten engaged and would like to be back down close to high school weight by this time next year when the wedding is (approximately 185lbs). My fiance and I are working on getting gym memberships but I need to start somewhere.

WoW = World of WarCRACK

I had 2 friends that became addicted to it. They are finally getting some treatment. They actually pick up their cell phones now... and I think even seen a bit of sun light.

I know that if I started playing WoW I would probably end up like "them". But after seeing a living example of what this game can do to you, and the amount of time required.... I never could get myself to buying it.

Some people can say "Oh yea... I just play 1-2 hours a night" ... but you know their lieing... and if their not... I bet they still make plans to "raid" with the clan on certain nights.... The clans/guilds my friends were in did their big raids on Saturday nights... which means no going out for them.... which = lameism.

Now that my friends have got some help they seem a lot more happier people. They don't look like white zombies with dark circles under their eyes, and they can actually talk to me about life and stuff, instead of instences and raids :p

My stomach is fine with wheatgrass in the am... or at any time really.. my body loves the stuff.. it's like drinking liquid life.. or so I tell myself. heh.. anyways, I have had up to 6 oz.. but anything more than 4oz in one session seems to be a bit of a waste.. sometimes I have another 2oz before I head home.. dep on energy levels.. all said and told, it's not cheap, but my well being is worth every penny. Try and drink it on an empty (or close to stomach for best results) and let it absorb for 30 mins before eating anyting. Everyone is different with it.. some peeps really love it and some don't always feel much from it.. I got my wife to try it for a while but she's not the one staying up til 3 and 4am.. heck, she's in bed at 10pm and that's when I am just about to plug in.. so while she liked it it was not a big priority for her.. AND, yes, green tea is a great way to keep caffiene in your life.. sort of a gentle delivery of it.. I need them both when I burn the candle at both ends like I like to...

During my "hardcore" days I would play WoW 60 hours a week or so. That's with having a full time job. I had over 170 days played when I quit in January. It started out as having a rogue and wanting a nice main hand dagger. Months later I'm raiding for Tier 3. My rogue was exalted with numerous factions. ZG, MC, BWL, AQ and Naxx were my homes. I'd plan and think about what gear I wanted while at work. I would look at how much attack power and such my rogue would have if I got a certain epic. "Ok if I get this, this and this...I'll have 1100AP."

I would PVP on raid off nights. Alterac Valley over and over and over. I got multiple epic mounts, farmed for thousands of gold, it just went on and on.

I think I quit just before the expansion because I finally was at a point of disinterest and didn't want to get sucked in again. I kinda miss it sometimes and a few old guildmates have emailed me and asked me to return.

Last year back in high school, my senior year to be exact, I tore my ACL and I did not play basketball that year. Well, I used to practice 3-5 hours a day after school, and since I did not have that, I was bored. I played a ton of Guild Wars, and a ton of FPS. I would stay up with friend\s and game all night, then be sleepy at school all day, the next day I would go to sleep at 8pm. Once my knee got better, I was so into PC Gaming that I did not play basketball much at all, even though I had opportnites. At one point, my mom cut the internet off, so I had to get a job. I convinced her to get it back, and I found a job at SEARS that I quit a week later. Either way, once I started college, it was pretty much the same for me for months, however i did start playing more basketball. Then the GW got old, and once I found a job in the warehouse I decided to get WoW, as a form of something to get addictged to .Either way, I tried playing it a bunch, but with school and work I barely have any time, nor desire to play the game that much. I still enjoy some aspects of it, I got my character to 32, and I prepaid for 3 months of it. I work from 2-11pm 5 days a week + school, I have 3-6 hours monday and tuesday and about 4 hrs the rest of the week. I play about 1-2 hrs monday or tuesday and I do not spend much time at all playing any other day of the week. I work out everyday and play hoops with friends and all that. So, with that being sad, working on a difficult job really does not leave any desire for gaming, I know a ton of guys in college, or even in high school that have no jobs and a little too much time on their hands.

Eh, I almost flunked out *partly cause of WoW. In short, a lot of my school work time was taken over by attempts to earn that one more level or auction that extra stuff I found. In the end, I just got so bored of the game I let my final month of my subscription blow by. Too bad it was a bit too late by then.

WoW can become an addiction, for sure. I've gotten past it, and from experience, the worst is if you get into a raiding guild. As you build up in anticipation of getting into the raiding experience and guild commradiere, you think that if I ever feel like WoW is becoming a job, I'll just quit. Of course, manycontinue in denial for a long time, some longer than others, until those that really are addicted assess their lives. At my peak, I probably played about 30 hours a week, with at least another 10 or 15 on forums.

WoW is like another other MMORPG, if you let it take hold of you, sure, you'll be addicted. If you don't, it can still be pretty fun. I raided (pretty sparingly at that) for about 6 months, and it became a challenge to convince my parents to have dinner before 6 (when raids start) and try to avoid them when we pushed past the ordinary scheduled 10pm end time. Then baseball came in, and BC was pretty dissapointing to me, so I slowly quit over a month or two. By the end of it, I only logged to chat and play with the people I'd played with for nearly 2 years ([H]guilders).

Well, there's my confession.

damn. and i thought diablo 2 was bad. (oh the uniques items...) i'm glad i enver played wow.

im sorry.. but dont you have to pay monthly for WoW ? Hmm to me..stupid..

And. I know people who have lost their girlfriends due to WoW.. Kinda pathetic really.

When your addicted to a game that much. You honestly are pathetic..
