My old modem broke so I got another one. I can connect when it's plugged in from the modem to my computer but my router doesn't respond.

You might have to give your ISP a call. Sometimes they will lock their modems to only talk to the mac address of the first device that plugs into them. If that was your computer, the modem may be locked to only talk to your computer. Lots of routers include an option to 'spoof' (fake) their mac address on the WAN for exactly this reason.

you just need to power cycle your modem and router. That is what I have had to do when swapping between modems.
