It's an external hard drive. A 500gb Western Digital My Book Premium.

I turned on my computer yesterday and during boot up it tried running check disk on it, and I skipped it because check disk usually effs things up even more. When I got into Windows, I opened My Computer and tried to access the drive and it said something "the file or directory is corrupted or unreadable" and I couldn't access it at all.

I have 250gb of porn/music/movies/tv shows/pictures/homework/etc. on there and need it to be recovered.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, unfortunately, I have to state the obvious that all hard drives eventually fail and you should've kept backups for your important data. :(

If it's still somewhat accessible (check Disk Management to see if the disk shows up) and try running data recovery software on it (GetDataBack is my personal recommendation).

If it's physical damage such as a head crash or other failed components, then your options at your end is rather limited, and if your data is worth that much, you can consider using professional data recovery firms to see if you can get some stuff back.

The drive shows up under disk management but it's blank under the file format column. When I right click on the drive and look through its properties, it says the file format is RAW.

if the window still can see the drive you are about 70% to get ur data back by software
