My "from PC to Xbox 360 to PS3" experience

I am sure that it will be the case...
However I'm also sure that in a year from now, there will have been a few more awesome games that will have come out, for both patforms, and that I will still be enjoying it.
:)

And the good thing with consoles is you won't have to update your hardware when the next new games comes out. The longer a console is out, the more developers get a feel for the programming and the better the games will get. A perfect example is the last Playstation 2 game I bought... Shadow of the Colossus.

This really no longer applies to PCs. The computers have caught up so much to the tech that you can go longer and longer between upgrades. Now if you want to run everything maxed out on a gigantic screen you may need to update more often depending on the game. At the same time compare the cost of upgrading a PC versus buying a new hard drive for the 360.

I remember when console gamers praised how it was a good thing that console games didn't need patches.

well I'm from the opposite direction. Unless I become super rich to buy consoles and almost never use them, the 360 just might be the last console I ever own. There are fewer and fewer good 4 player games to play on the same console, and theres next to no console exclusive games I'll even give a second glance.

That's actually a good point that I griped about a few days ago. I went over to a friend's house and brought my PS3 controller so we can play some Little Big Planet, but while I was there, I wanted to try playing some split-screen multiplayer with my friend on Bad Company 2, but alas there was no option to play like that. Then we tried playing Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and there was no split-screen multiplayer either. And idk if it's just those two games or a limited amount but I was thinking that there is no excuse, especially for shooters, to not have even some basic "same-console" multiplayer. And then I instantly missed playing games like Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64 on 4 player split-screen. That was fun as hell... just "BYOC. (bring your own controller)."

So I finished Uncharted last week, and then proceeded to finish Uncharted 2 yesterday.
What a gaming experience! Really feels like a Hollywood Action Adventure movie.

I do not regret the PS3 one bit so far, for the exclusives alone!
I finished God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 1&2, and played LBP a lot with my gf.
I didn’t really like Infamous, and I haven’t had the chance to try Demon’s Soul, Killzone and MGS4.

Anyway, to those who haven’t played the Uncharted saga yet, do it!

You sound like me, I did't care for infamous all that much either but Uncharted 1&2 are in a category all their own. And GoW3 was just awesome in every way.

I would try MGS4 next if I was you because it's not insanely difficult. And if you like hack & slash rpg's then you'll love Demon's Soul but it is extremely difficult. Then play KZ2 because you will want to shoot someone after playing Demon's soul:p

That's pretty much the order in which I am trying to borrow these games from my friends HAHAH

Uncharted 1&2 really are fantastic games. play MGS4 next, it's a great experience.

Honeymoon period. Please reply to your own post a year from now. That will be your true experience. Your story might remain the same...but I will be willing to bet, some of the shiny will wear off.

honeymoon period and justification of purchases. Not to take away anything but initial impressions is what they are.

I went to PC to PC PLUS all the platforms. To me the Wii impressed me the most but I could never be a sole Wii gamer. Because 90 % of whats released on that console is pure and utter garbage! The other 10 % games smokes anything on the Xbox 360 and PS 3 ;).

The Xbox 360/PS 3 has been quite underwhelming for me. Sure they have some exclusives so worth it to me since I have the money ;)... But whenever there is an option I get the superior PC version.

It´s often the same type of games whereas the Wii has been better giving me unique game experiences.
PS 3 also serves as media center and bluray player. the Xbox 360 is crap at everything but games so it´s the console I would recommend the least despite having better graphic capabilities then the PS 3.

Not a true PC gamer; if you can't spot games running at half the framerate and sub-HD resolutions a mile away there's something wrong with you.

The Xbox 360 / PS3 proprietary computer experience pales in comparison to the open platform computer experience offered with the PC.

PC purists are in denial, and if not, snobbish ;)
Many of them make a direct comparison of games when they should appreciate the different style/type of games offered by the console platforms. As much as FPS sucks on console for PC gamers, they never gonna see games like ICO, God of War or Castle Crashers on their PC.

lol yeah you do. I've got ICO, God of War 1 & 2 running on my PC and it's a much better experience than with the native hardware. And why would I want some babby's first flash game title like Castle Crashers? Give it a decade and I'll have PS3 games running on my PC better than they ran on the PS3...

Patient PC gaming FTW!

And why would you need a "media server" when you've got a PC... PCs can already play every format under the sun... why would you need a separate box? It makes no sense.

Patient is one thing, but I'm not going to wait a decade to play God of War 3. I absolutely recognize that PC gaming will trump console gaming in the graphics department every single time. If I have the option to get an FPS for PS3 or PC I'll go PC every time. I would never play an RTS on a console.

That said, the way my living room is laid out it's not feasible to have a PC connected to my TV. Gaming on the couch in front of a 42" TV is more convenient and more comfortable for me in a lot of cases. Besides, God of War 3 and Uncharted 2 already look pretty damn great.

I don't see what's not feasible about just getting a big ass HDMI cable and wireless mouse and keyboard. And a wireless Xbox 360 controller. Bam, you've got the ultimate console.

That is true comedy right there.......you are seriously waiting to play some of these top titles for ten years just for a few extra fps?

Madness.

First off, I know I'm in the minority but I prefer the PS3 controller. I don't dislike the 360 controller, but if I were to have my choice I'd go with the PS3.

I guess you'd have to see my place to understand. I have a very specific nook above my fireplace that fits my TV with about a quarter of a centimeter of clearance on either side. There's really no place in the room for a PC.

Plus, I love my PS3. It would be nice to have a PC hooked up to my TV but it's far from necessary.

thanks for the update, you definitely should try MGS4, i'd put that on the top of your list if you can. I'd also recommend you try Valkyria Chronicles, you can pick up a copy really cheap

http://www.amazon.com/Valkyria-Chro..._1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1281056334&sr=8-1

I've however seen it cheaper than that, as low as $17 on Amazon at certain times.

Bet your bottom dollar that's a good buy regardless.

Definitely glad you're considering Demon's Souls, it's a game that will make a man out of you, you'll become some kind of bizarre double man! :D

How far away is your PC from your TV? More than 20 ft? If not, you can typically get a decent HDMI cable and run it through to the TV. I mean, I agree to an extent that it's nice being able to play on a couch over having a higher resolution than on my 1080p TV. Games like Need for Speed, Grid, and other games I'll just run through the TV. Games which require precision I'll use my monitors.

TV's on the first floor. PC's on the third floor. I know that it could technically be done but it's not worth the effort.

Meh, my PC is basically the center of entertainment, education and work. TV goes through my PC and I use it as a PVR, I play games on it, have an xbox 360 controller hooked up to it, I use it for study and with its beefy CPU I use it for number crunching as well. The only thing I dont like about it is that I can't do all those things simultaneously :p

I'll buy a console when there are games enough to compel me. There's a few good games on each of the consoles at the moment, not enough to make me buy one given I have 2 dozen awesome games on PC sitting in my steam account that I haven't touched, all of which I got for a couple of hundred during sales.

I have both consoles myself, and the PS3 is a MUCH better media center than the 360. Download PS3MediaServer for your PC and you're good to go. You can play a lot more stuff with it, and yeah... God of War 3 was the most epic game I have played in a while and I never finished the first two.

Also, a really good fighting/action game like Dante's Inferno and God of War you will like is Heavenly Sword. The game has amazing and beautiful graphics and gameplay... some of the scenes in that game are just jaw dropping.

Enjoy your PS3... I don't even play my 360 much anymore.

Consoles bring good gaming fun to far more people . not many can afford 1000 to 2000 that a decent gaming machine would cost, but for under 500 you can have an awesome console setup with a few games. You pay more for he graphics cards to get tthe great pc gameplay than you do for a console its self. Yes a PC is more versitile but it comes down to simple economics a console gives better bang for the buck. You can have as much fun on a console game as a PC game in most cases . So don't knock consoles they provide gaming for the average person.

My cousin called me yesterday telling me that he is going out of the country for about 2 months.
He was sad because he bought Red Dead Redemption, and hasn't had time to give it a proper try yet.
So he asked me to play it for him during his absence so I can tell him if the game is worth playing upon his return :D

Sometimes, life is good!
:)

Come to the future quimby. It's not 2000 anymore. :p PC gaming hardware is not that expensive unless you want it to be. For the record I don't have as much fun on my consoles as my PC.. The PC just gives me much more enjoyment and its WORTH EVERY PENNY. My son and his friend wanted gaming PCs last year. They earned money during the first couple weeks of summer and I built each a complete gaming PC for under $1000 each. They both are still using them daily for "everything" while the consoles sit unplayed.

OP, did you feel console gaming didn't have enough market share so you had to promote it? Don't get me wrong if you want to console game and felt the need to express it that's nice, once. However don't keep trolling on PC gaming just because you've decided to switch. It "appears" that way since you keep bumping this thread. ;)

I been console gaming since the 70s. I graduated to PC gaming in the mid 90s. I kept buying consoles till the current bunch. Since I bought them I rarely play them. I've bought the 360, Wii, and PS3 (ton of games) and only ended up using the PS3 to watch movies. I try to play the AA games and quickly become bored to tears and go back to my PC to game. NOW that was a waste of money.

Just wanted to let PC gamers on the fence considering consoles know that they may not be happy buying a console. That's my console to PC/console experience. I'm seriously considering this being the last consoles I'll ever buy. They are becoming to PC like (losing their identity) and with that thought I'd rather just use a PC.

I also have a 360 and PS3, and the only thing I would comment about the OP is that the PS3 is a MUCH better Media Center device than the 360. If you install "PS3 Media Server" on your computer and connect with your PS3... you'll be able to view virtually any format on your PS3 and it'll transcode any video format in real-time to the PS3 so basically any file type can be viewed. It's simple, and easy to use and is just awesome when you have a large collection on a Media Server.

Dude, don't talk out of your ass like this. The XBox can do the SAME thing.

Bought BC2. Bought a quad core for the game. Still slower than I'd like. I've spent $250 already and would probably be looking @ another $250 to put the framerate where I want it.

I have spent less than $500 on all my 360 stuff and it gets FAR more playtime than BC2. I'm still in my return period for the quad and debating about returning it. I simply have no need for a quad other than this game...which I don't play. And Crysis 2 can get bent.

In all fairness, I'm getting old and the casual simplicity of a system that does everything for me whilst sitting on a comfy couch and holding a comfy controller puts a bigger smile on my face. The bigger AV experience puts it over the top.

copy that, at 31 I dont have the inclination to use my disposable income on upgrades very frequently or the desire to spend time in front of the pc rather than the tv playing a game on the bigger screen.

LOL, at 29 (30 on Saturday :(), I have less time for games now but when I do I enjoy spending that time in front of my 3008WFP. Hell, I'm even considering NV Surround at some point. Controllers just don't appeal to me anymore, which is weird considering I was playing NES and SNES way before I started gaming on a PC in 1996 or so, but I will still use them to play racing games and awesome exclusives like Uncharted, LBP, MGS4, etc.

I admit that it is nice to be able to pop a disc in and just play on a console without worrying about crashes or patches (that hassle has been somewhat mitigated by Steam), but I still believe the PC provides a superior gaming experience for ME. And like I've been saying lately, in my old age I no longer believe that there is a "best" of anything for anyone. It's all personal preference, and right now I prefer the PC. I still appreciate the consoles and won't turn my nose up at anyone who says the 360 or PS3 provides them with a better experience. I value my time and rather than spam the forums trying to convince them why they should switch to PC gaming, I just let them be and everyone's happy.

It is fall 2005.

2 gamers, 2 stories.

Only one has a happy ending.

Jimbob picks up an Xbox 360 for $400.

Billybob picks up Tom's Hardware's $500 gaming pc.

Jimbob still enjoys playing modern games such as MW2 and BC2.

Billybob hasn't played shit because he lacks a keyboard, mouse, and an OS.

So what exactly did Billybob get for his extra $100? He got a big pile of shaft, that's what.

500pcin2005.jpg

Nice to hear about your positive experience. I believe all PC gamers should have at least 1 gaming console in order to experience exclusive games and genres that seldom show up on PC's.

Sticking to just one platform is akin to jerking off to the same porno mag every day. The others may or may not be better, but it's nice to check out something new.

You forgot the part where jimbob has 2-3 rrods and his warranty ran out on his 3rd so now he has to spend another 299 on another 360! also the fact that hes spent at least $30 a year on live just so he can play online which equals anotehr $150 lol, swings and roundabouts mate

jimbob is actually my friend dave and his launch console is still going strong. $30 on live maybe true, but he's getting something PC gamers do not. Having all my trailers, music (Zune pass), games, friends, etc all in one spot kicks ass.

Not to mention the additional couple of hundred bucks spent on the PC allows you to do MUCH more than the console. But if someone is only interested in gaming, and has no desire to create documents, encode video, download files, etc...then maybe the console makes sense.

For most people though, a PC is going to be in the house anyway. So a console (multiple consoles in the case of the 360) is an additional expense, while they could simply buy a better graphics card to boost the gaming capabilities of the PC while being able to do far more than what a console is capable of.

Then you realize the PSU isn't enough... then AGP was outdated some years ago. Mobo needs to go, which means CPU and memory...

Crap, bought a POS Dell, stinking case is B(i)TX form factor.

PC's are circumstancial. However, I do see consoles being very useful for the world that doesn't upgrade PCs themselves. Say as you like, there are people who just hate having a PC that... doesn't work because some carryover of an ATi driver has made is so your nVidia GPU cannot play Just Cause 2 without crashing to the desktop every few minutes.

Either way, a PC requries time and patience. If your console fries... well... that requires either patience, or an Apple fanboi attitude towards hardware (buy the new junk! Same as last year's crap!Litterally, we mean it!).

Now that I have completely lost my point, I now figure this can go both ways, lol :p

Gonna go sleep, now...:(

well points taken but all i can say is that i went from hardcore pc in 1996 as that beat everything in performance then in 2000 it was the ps2 (Tekken Tag and ridge racer 5 definately did that for me lol!), 2002 it was back onto PCs (i cant remember what features and games made me do that , then in 2005 i went hardcore 360 as that played/worked better than anything (think it was burnout/fight night/dead or alive 4,ridge racer 6 that did it aswell), then in the back end of 2006 it was PS3 due to PS3 Exclusives/free online and Bluray, now just this month im back on PCs, i bought a 2 year old Customised Sony Vaio AW11S 18.4" powerful laptop for £500 that does everything i need (doesnt need the help of any other machine for that price)
Bluray, Digital TV, PC Gaming (games run better than any console, no discs required thanks to the outstanding Steam Platform) 1TB Hard drive space etc etc, ill still be keeping the PS3 though for exclusives and move but PC is the favourite atm. In a couple of years ill be on the next gen consoles. You just have to weigh up the costs at the time.

STEAM!

Or my HDD, either way, it's all in one place :p.

I love my consoles, and I love my PC's too. But both the PS3 and Xbox suck my balls when it comes to the online experience.

You just have to weigh up the costs at the time.

+1
I started on an Atari 2600 as a kid and a 13" black & white tv .. :p

next jump in my early twenties - Super Nintendo (Super Mario Kart,Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo + Mello Yello and Tony's pizza FTW)

Then - Pentium2 350mhz,128mgs ram,8gb hdd,Matrox Millienium G200 and Tombraider games ..

HL on PC ..whoa

short stint with the N64

Radeon 9800 pro and the promise of HL2,CS:S,TF2,DOD:S with the new fangled STEAM for free

then .. XBOX360 .. was a diehard pc FPS'r .. could not get around trying to aim on the console .. but plowed ahead with GearsofWar as my sensai ..still not great, but it doesn't feel foreign anymore.. even got my wife hooked

Now ..it's an occasional round of TF2 on Steam ..and mostly sitting on the couch with my wife playing co-op on our 56" DLP

we beaten Gears 1&2, Rainbow Six Vegas 1&2,Halo 3,Army of Two 1& 2,LFD, and now we sit and play LFD2 .. great fun

it's whatever setup fits your needs, lifestyle, personal tastes better is all ..
