My BenQ FP241WZ

hi i just got my benq is it advisable to buy a better dvi cable than the benq one ?? i,m using dvi-d output is there better for me i,m using a radeon 1900xt from sapphire as well and advice on this one ? cheers all

Hi Sinbios,
The Chinese article that I am referring to is on post number 89 of this thread. It is translated to English from Chinese but it loses lot in translation. My main concern is where they talk about the disassembly being expensive. Are they talking about disassembling an expensive monitor or the disassembly being expensive because it cannot be reassembled? LOL!

Edit: There is a lot of information on post number 89. There are 26 pages of the disassembly article here http://translate.google.com/transla...0&hl=en&safe=off&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&sa=N you will need to be very bored to read them all. :)

Hmm, where do they say it's expensive?

That is the first excessive ghosting compliant that I've heard of. It is strange that you didn't notice the excessive ghosting with the FP241W. I did notice a little ghosting on mine, but nothing serious. If it's not a defective cable, I would suggest returning it and trying a different monitor manufacturer.

It's not all games that it's that bad. In Far Cry, I can barely see any ghosting. But in HL2, F.E.A.R. and S.T.A.L.K.E.R., which are all pretty dark games in places, it's very bad. So I don't think it's the cable. Pretty annoying, for a monitor this expensive...

but far cry is nowhere near the the other games listed in terms of colors and graphics quality. It could be your GFX card, cable, or monitor.

Cable is the one that came with the monitor, the gfx is a inno3D 800GTX. I'll try ordering a high quality dvi cable tomorrow. But I don't think ghosting is a valid RMA case, though, since my guess is that it's the standard of the screen. I've seen my number of screens and I would like to think I can see regular ghosting on a LCD screen when I see it. But I hope I'm wrong. :)

Higgy,

Thank you for your concern. Everything is fine with my monitor. No dead pixel. I just received my DVD player Oppo DV_981HD. I tried it yesterday and the picture looks very nice. I did plug earlier my monitor to the HD cable box, 1080i shows are amazing on this monitor. The picture is so sharp.

I will post some pics as soon as I have some time but it could take a week as I am going on vacation this Saturday.

UPDATE. I now bought a pretty expensive DVI cable. Same problem. Tried hooking the monitor up to a Dell XPS laptop. Same problem. Just moving this windows with the black and red colors around drags shadows. I guess the monitor is going back. Anyone has a alternative to what I should try out instead?

is the dvi cable that comes with benq monitor a good one ? i,m using dvi-d i think it is from my graphs card would i be better doing dvi to hdmi with a dvi to hdmi cable ?? anyone tried this

yayyeeeee... just got my wz delivered. £667 (US$ 1,314) including delivery. no dead pixel (checked by dead pixel buddy), jan'07 manfc and no stand crooked :p. colour is black stand & silver boddy (no all black for EU ). its good to be back in world of 24" lcd .
have checked the perfect motion thingy in normal desktop use. u can notice the flickering a little in white background but in others its baerly noticable but its from my own viewing experience. this is totally subjective as i'm not a hardcore gamer and was quiet ok to put up with my old 17" dell ultrasharp without complain for 3 years.
but the perfect motion do have some tricks i have to say. i used this site: http://www.prad.de/en/monitore/ghosting2.html to check it. by enabling and checking all 3 setting and have to say it dose work. on position 3 the ghosting is non existing. i know for sure bcoz i checked it in my dell and was thinking how did i ever put up with this crap for so long.

Can't say for sure. I'm using my 3 year old dvi cable that came with my dell ultrasharp 17" monitor. and it still works.

just plugged in a dvi from video card which is a raddy 1900xt 512 mb to the hdmi port on lcd and text is all fuzzy why is this thought it would be better than dvi on lcd any ideas what went wrong ?

This does work for XP....See post #218 in this thread (or this post in the FP241W thread. Since I made the changes, the black outs in XP went away. Oddly enough, I do not get this issue in Vista at all.

I am playing F.E.A.R. and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. with this display and am using an eVGA 8800GTX. I'm not seeing any ghosting whatsoever in any of the dark places and only get a tiny trace amount of tearing with Vsync off. My eyes are very sensative to things such as ghosting, etc and I'd see it is it were there. Not saying you don't see it, because I'm sure you do, but I'm just saying that I do not get the same thing with these games on this display.

that stalker is a bitch of a game but i agree looks good on my monitor as well but it is a buggy game even with latest patch tried using a dvi to the hdmi on the lcd and the text was crap why was this ?

hiya guys,
can anyone with WZ version and Oppo DV-981HD dvd player check, when HDMI is connected but ur using windows vista desktop over dvi-d mouse pointer movment or video or any kind of display activity causing distorted noise on windows?
may be its my video card then again i didn't had this problem at first.
first i had the problem of switching from hdmi back dvi-d would cause no signal detect problem and had to reboot but after few hour that was gone. but next day i have this bloody problem.
if i take out the HDMI cable it gets fixed. so trying to figure if i'm the only one with this problem or if my monitor is broken.
for ref. my spec is:
Ati Radeon 9800XT with creative audigy 2 on Vista business.
oh also my monitor makes a very faint noise. is it a big problem?
cheers

Just picked this up today, and I gotta say, the PerfectMotion thing is unusable. Flickers like a CRT with 60Hz refresh rate.

Could anyone with this monitor and a PS3 pleeeeease do the pattern test I posted above with HDMI? It is my only reservation about this monitor - if PS3 HDMI maps the pixels properly, I am going to snap one up.

Higgy: where are the Chinese instructions for opening the monitor up? I could translate for you if you want.

Yes, someone please please please test a PS3 connected via HDMI running at 1080p and see if the 1:1 pixel mapping option works properly (it should produce slight borders at top and bottom, but no borders at the sides. ie. 1920x1080)

Here are some PS3 games in 1080p..
> Ridge Racer 7
> Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection
> Blast Factor
> Gran Turismo HD
> NBA Street Homecourt

There may be more, I dont know. But if you dont have any of these games, pleeeeeeeeeease connect your PS3 to the web and download a FREE demo of Ridge Racer 7 or Gran Turismo HD.

I am in exactly the same boat as Sinbios, cos if this monitor can pixel map the 1080p signal properly by 1:1, then I will definitely buy one too.

Thanks in advance.

@Sinbios
Have you tried any 1080p games with PerfectMotion, like BA005 is talking?

If you decide to send yours back, could you tear it apart and check the panel number first. I was too chicken! LOL

I couldn't find that article I told you about from the Chinese review, sorry.

Sorry, I don't have a HD gaming system yet. I have tried the HDMI input with a 1080p computer image and it was fine. I'm wondering what is the true nature of the 1:1 problem. Monitor, or input?

Looks like it could be input.

Does anyone have this monitor and a PS3 so we can finally put an end to all of this........!!!!!!!!???????????

wouldn't benq technical support be able to answer this HDMI, PS3 1:1 issue mess? im curious myself and seems nobody on this forum has this monitor and the PS3 to test.

I've sent an inquiry through BenQ's online support asking about this. I will let you know what they say.

Of course if anyone fancies calling the customer support to ask, that would be great....

(I cant do it here in Japan because I cant speak Japanese very well)

the 1:1 issues of this monitor and the fp241w and even the vw are exactly the same. They crop the signal. I have a ps3 and 241w and tested it. the service centre is currently in talks with Benq engineers to sort this out.

One has to wonder what the QA process at benq is to allow the same fault to slip through on three different monitors.

Do you think that if I buy a FP241WZ now, can the fix be updated later by some software upgrade? Or is it a hardware issue?

Apologies, I am not a very technical person!!

Well initially my monitor didn't have any 1:1 scaling option so i took it to the Benq service centre and after 5 minutes they had upgraded the firmware - which is basically a software upgrade.

So IF benq decide to fix this issue - because I don't see how it could be hardware related - then purchasing the monitor now and upgrading later is a viable option.

In hindsight I would have opted for waiting instead of playing the guniea pig.

I was considering getting the BenQ FP241WZ but im worried about ghosting is it noticble to a degree that would be off putting in games and is noticbly different then FP241W in terms to ghosting.

Thanks in advanced.

Well folks, looks like I'm moving over to the BenQ camp as I earlier this afternoon put a hold on a FP241WZ over at my local PC shop. Should be picking it up tonight :)

I've been using a Gateway FPD2485W (November manuf. date) for the past couple of months and honestly just can't get use to the inverted ghosting issues it has (and a few other small issues).
While the Gateway is a nice screen with a very solid feature set, it's just not quite for me.

I hope the BenQ will be more to my liking.

Is thge issue with this screen that it wont pixel map at 1080p or that it wont display 1080p pixel mapped? And is this a PS3 issue or a FP241WZ issue? I was gonna buy this screen but found this thread and have decided to wait a bit now.

Also... What is the general consensus on the FP241W vs the FP241WZ. is the "Z" really as useless as people make it out to be? Is it not even worth the extra 40 bucks just to have the option??

Regards,
B

Someone mentioned that the 1:1 1080p overscaling issue might be a fault of the PS3 hardware and not the monitor.

So does that mean that the Dell 2407WFP Rev A04 doesnt work either? Or any 24 onch with 1:1 mapping function?

Not sure what you mean "overscraling" but AFAIK 2407 can map 1:1 correctly

I think he was referring to the theory that the BenQ doesn't deal with the overSCAN of the PS3 well.

Thanks j.archer, yes I was.

If the 2407 can handle 1:1 1080p signal perfectly, then obviously the overscan problem on the BenQ is a fault of the monitor and not the PS3, right?

Also, what is AFAIK?

Yeah, looks like it's a BenQ problem :( AFAIK=as far as I know

I hope BenQ can sort this out, because the 1:1 pixel mapping of a 1080p signal from a PS3 is going to be the decided factor between me purchasing a BenQ or the Dell.

I have contacted BenQ's customer service by email about this and explained that I will buy a Dell if I have to! But they havent got back to me yet.

Actually I hope they can sort this out, because I'd rather purchase the BenQ.

what is the problem exactly? I am not reading this correctly or something. Can the monitor not transmit the signal in 1080p? Or can the moniter not scale it properly? please verify this for me. And if anyone has gotten any info from BenQ please don't be shy.

It can accept a 1080p signal, but it cannot scale it properly when using 1:1 pixel mapping. It 'overscans'. I'm not exactly sure what overscan means, but I think it's where the scaled image doesnt fit the screen correctly.
