My BenQ FP241WZ

...Later in the year, the FP241WZ will follow which includes BenQ's new AMA-Z and BFI technologies (Advanced Motion Accelerator with BFI / Black Frame Insertion)...Both models offer the same panel and features, but the Z edition has the new BFI technology as well. More on this later. The specs for both models are based on AU Optronics' 24"WS P-MVA M240UW01 V0 panel.
.
Both models are the FP241W and FP241WZ. There is something a tad bit confusing here. When I visit AUO it doesn't show a V0 24" panel only a V2 24" panel. So is it correct to say that the FP241WZ uses a M240UW01 V2 panel (A-MVA panel)?

@Eastcoasthandle, I can tell you firsthand that this is a good place to buy from. I bought mine there. They will even match the price if it lowers before they ship it. Check reseller ratings.

I think I'm going to have to get my screwdriver out and put this matter to rest.

Didnt that chinese site quoted moons ago (as it seems now) do this and state the WZ did indeed use the P-MVA M240UW01 V0 panel?

But please, dont let that stop you getting the screwdriver out. :)

My crappie video won't do this monitor any justice but this is 1080i over HDMI in the aspect mode.

You might have to play it twice to get it to run right.

Yup, that looks right, black borders at top and bottom as you would expect. Thats what 1:1 should look like with a 1080 input. Now just count the pixels in the black space to make sure ;) LOL.....

Thanks for posting that Higgy.

Mike

It might be a possibility that at some point they started shipping the new W model with the new panel in it. I am completely guessing on that.

Thanks for the heads up (read your later post as well). I will consider this site when I finally make my decision.
EDIT: What did you pay for shipping!! There shipping cost is just too high Sorry, but I never ship equiptment like this using ground, you suppose to use the fast method possible to avoid damaged freight. When it's all said and done, Tiger Direct's price is still cheaper when I consider the shipping method I want to use.

One of chinese website disassemble a 241WZ

Hey Aerobahn, can you get some screenshots of your PS3 in 1080p 1:1 mode? A lot of people want to see that.

Eastcoasthandle;
I paid $18.50 shipping from Texas to Ohio. It only took two days to deliver and I went the cheapest route. Sorry again

I agree with you Eastcoasthandle, but if you want it delivered to you on a pillow you will have to pay for it. :D

higgy have you ran PixPerAn on it yet? It's a neat little program (found at the bottom of the page reading "download") that determines the amount of ghosting.

Self motivational Sig:
FP241WZ &
FP241VW uses the M240UW01 V2 panel which is indeed AUO's new A-MVA panel

Edited:
Called Benq and verified that this is not a A-MVA panel but a PVA panel using AMA-Z technology. Sorry for the confusion. If this brand uses the new A-MVA panel it may very well be isolated in that country (referring to the photo taken showing A-MVA panel). They only way to verify if this is a A-MVA panel at this point is to ask Higgy to finally take the cover off and photo the label giving us a clear idea of what's used.

Yes I did, I tried it last night, very little ghosting! I tried perfect motion on it and it didn't seem to make a difference for some reason.

I wanted to make something clear here about the FP241WZ monitor that I was mistaken to believe before. Called Benq and verified that this is not a A-MVA panel but a PVA panel using AMA-Z technology. Again for the sake of clarity

The A-MVA panel referred to in this photo maybe isolated in that region only. What this means in a nutshell is that this monitor would have nothing to do with AUO at all. Therefore Higgy may have to get the ole screw driver and verify (photos) what it reads underneath the plastic cover. Higgy, are you feeling up to it?
Review link that clearly states this is a PVA panel

Finally, after lusting over a 24in lcd for over a year now, my brand new FP241WZ arrived today!!! OMG, this thing is freakin' awesome. Coming from an ancient 17in lcd, this thing is a monster. No dead pixels and no backlight bleed! woohoo, I am so excited.

Anyway, when I get some time, hopefully next week, I will post a full review. Let me give some initial impressions. First of all, the picture on thing is amazing, especially compared to my 4 year old dinosaur. This monitor is super-bright; I had to immediately turn the brightness down to 40 from the default of 90. The colors are great, especially after a quick calibration using my Spyder2. While black and greys are not like a CRT, is worlds better than my old lcd and I can actually play a dark game and see. Tried playing with some gradients in photoshop and no significant banding as far as I can tell.

Let me give a quick opinion of AMA-Z. First a disclaimer, I have not spent enough time with this display to form anything firm. I am not sure if this display does indeed use black frame insertion. I took a quick video with my pocketpc, and the "waviness" of the picture does not seem like it could be attributed to BFI. I think this screen may use a screening backlight like the original behardware preview. I will try to look into this when I have more time. Anyway, I do not believe I will be using AMA-Z that much. The picture quality is degraded when using it (can be compensated somewhat by increasing brightness), and there is flickering. Moreover, I really do not notice less ghosting when using it. I guess my eyes are just not sensitive to ghosting, but I think there is little ghosting with AMA-Z on or off. The hit to the picture is not worth it when ghosting is not severe anyway. Oh well, I got this monitor to be somewhat future proof, so the many features this monitor has and the fact the AMA-Z can be easily disabled make it a non-issue. One other quick negative, I noticed that the screen is tilted slightly. I saw on this forum that someone was able to fix it by making some adjustments on the base; I will try to find the post.

Right now, it is just have it plugged in to my PC, and I don't have an XBox360, PS3, or other high-def source, so I will not be able to run tests on these features. Anyway, don't let the negatives I post give you the wrong impression as I am extremely satisfied with this high quality display. The picture itself is flawless with no noticeable backlight bleed or dead pixels. There is little ghosting even with AMA-Z turned off, and the colors, blacks, and whites are really nice. I hope to have time to post a more thorough review in the future when I get some free time. If you have any specific questions, ask away on this thread.

BenQ tech support have given about 4 or 5 different answers on the various threads regarding the panel used, I believe the photos much more than their front like CS people. :)

Ok, you know how I said I canceled my order at Buy.com and ordered the Dell 24", right? Well, I didn't cancel in time. So, there is an FP241WZ sitting at my house, and the Dell is 2407 is coming later today as well. I guess since I am stuck sending one of them back at a loss, I'll at least do a shoot out and compare them to my 22" (20" visible) Mitsubishi CRT.

I own these devices I can try with the monitors:
PC (VGA, DVI)
XBox 360 (Component, VGA)
XBox (Component)
Dreamcast (VGA, Component)
Sega Saturn (SVid)
Oppo 971h DVD (HDMI 720p, 1080i)
Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD (HDMI 720p, 1080i)

Sorry, I don't own a 1080p HDMI device. Anyone near Ames, IA have a PS3 I can borrow for a day or two? *grin*

Anyway, I'll try to run all these devices on both monitors and give my opinion and pics as well. I'll try stuff with Perfect Motion on and off, I'll mess with the scaling features for various inputs on both monitors (if I get the A4 version of the Dell), and I'll run some lag tests. Is there anything else you guy would want to see on a shootout? Let me know. Thanks!!

I would love to see the results here, but looking out for your wallet won't you avoid the 15% Buy restock fee by not opening the Benq and just shipping it back?

Yeah, I did open it already... *grin* It arrived as I was walking out the door for work, so I came in to work late so I could play with it. No dead pixels!! Yeah! So, from all I have read so far, this monitor is probably the keeper. A buddy at work might buy the Dell from me as well... Or, if I take it to work, maybe I can count the Dell as a tax deduction or something... *laugh* Only I'll have to pay for two expensive monitors then. *sigh*

Well, I am sure everyone would like to see a full test of each of the monitors, in any case. Btw, does anyone know what stopwatch / clock software I should use for testing the input lag against my crt?

Jim

Ok, the "showdown" review is half done. I put it up on my personal 360 game site. Check it out:

http://www.bexox.com/showdown.htm

I still need to get the Dell out of the box... But I'll do it this weekend some time...

I think I'll make a new thread for comments and questions on the Showdown, as well.

Here is the new thread for discussion on the article:

Later...

BeHardware needs to hire you ASAP !! Great review :)

keep up the good work guys. Thanks for the info and keep'em coming. I'm in the market for a benq fp241w(maybe z) myself.

Got mine on Friday. Everything is fine except the component does not work properly:( . I try on 2 different DVD players and I am getting a red picture. I sent an e-mail to TechonWeb for a RA number for a return.

Am I the only one who have component issue? Did somone heard another guy with the same problem than me?

This looks wrong, as per the 1080p problems in 1:1 (It should not have borders all the way around)

Mike

I think that the input signal might be 1440 horizontal, and maybe that's why you've got the pillar boxing, ie, if he's receiving a 1440x1080i signal.....just a guess.

Yes but 1440x1080 is NOT 1080i or 1080p. 1440x1080 (with no i or p) is a PC resolution not a HD certified resolution.. The 1080 specification is 1920x1080. You cannot just add a p or i to a resolution and suddenly make it a HD resolution. There is only 720p, 1080i and 1080p in the TV world that are HD. None of these have a resolution of 1440x1080.

So something is still wrong. I can't imgagine all these 1080 devices are outputting the wrong signal. Its more likely to be the monitor not handling 1080 correctly.

This is prooven by the fact aspect works correclty without distortion or zooming as people have suggested, elsewhere on here and other places its been quoted the BenQ shrinks the 1080 signal in 1:1 for some reason, no one knows why. Hence the bug....

Mike

because most of the monitors expect major brands has problems with blu-ray, my westinghouse 1080p TV also can not play blu-ray with 1080p. therefore, i want to know anyone who played blu-ray dvd with this monitor though major blu-ray players like samsung, sony, pioneer, even though the monitor display 4 black bar for 1:1 mode. if the monitor recognize 1080p, i consider to change my tv to this monitor. let me know.....
