what is next? and what router should I shoot for? any suggestions? I am trying to get something in the 50 dollars range... anything..

Spending an extra $30-$50 for "draft" technology may be unwise -- remember what happened to all of the "draft" 802.11G devices? Worthless now....

Anyway a lot of it depends on the distance / speed you need. I have an older Belkin F5D7231 running as AP and it works great. I get good signal even 2 rooms and 1 floor away from the AP. Not bad for a $50-60 device (got it 2 years ago)

Feel free to PM me links to credible reviews but just because something is NEW does not mean it's good or 'better' than the last model. By your logic the WRT54GL would be better than the DGL-4300 or the Linksys SRX series, just because it's newer... even though it has the same internals as the WRT54G v4.
