It is out of warranty and Asus is asking $60 just for a diagnostic. What would the cost of repair likely be and are there other options?

Please see this image for the damage:

Depends on the cost of the laptop, how new it is and if you can get a new one for as much as the repair costs. At least that's how I would look at it. If it's out of warranty you could try a local PC place. Geek Squad might do it. You can find them in Best Buy. It doesn't look like the actual display panel is broken which I have heard is the most expensive thing and usually cost quite a bit to replace. As in it's just easier and cheaper to buy a new one.

I don't know the cost of the actual repair. But I wouldn't expect it to be cheap. I would go to a local repair shop and ask them. They can give you an estimate and it probably won't be far off from what ASUS would want. Asus usually has good customer support. But they won't do anything out of warranty for free.

are the screw posts actually broken? google the model + lid assembly if it is.
