My 6870 just died, on a 5770 backup card. Want advice for bang for buck upgrade.

First I am not a gamer by a long shot, however; once in a blue moon I don't mind firing up something like METRO 2033/COD/Black OPs/Crisis/etc. I had a XFX Double D HD-687A-ZDFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB @ 900/1050MHz and recently it failed out of the blue (vertical lines on the screen and prior random blue screens for a long time I couldn't pin down).

What would be a good <$100 and a <$200 bang for buck option to move forward? I current have a AMD 955x4 @ 3.7GHz, but I am moving to a i7-2600k. I game at 1920x1600.

Thanks

best thing ive seen is a used XFX 290x OC for $170 shipped on these forums or a geforce 970 for $140. Brand new your stuck between a rock and a hard place. 1050TI for $140 or $300 for a 1060 6gb neither of which is super impressive to me, id try to score a cheap 970 2nd hand

1920x1600? did you mean 2560x1600 or 1080p? if it's 1600p you'd probably be better off with the used card choices buttons gave.. if it's 1080p the 1050ti does pretty well for the price or the rx 570/80 but those are damn near impossible to find at or below MSRP still. but i'd definitely look at the used market first before going out and buying a new card.. the last couple generations of budget cards are so close in performance to previous gen high end that you can find some decent deals.

I would agree that an AMD 290 or 290x would be your best bet. The 290 has great price for power, and the 290x is a little less but still good (more power but not relative to price usually.) I saw a 290 on here not long ago for $160 or $170 and that'd be a pretty big upgrade from a 6870 (and certainly a 5770.)

Craigslist has been my win recently. Got a Geforce 970 a few weeks ago for $130.

I highly suggest the Geforce 970. Anyone who makes a joke or complains about the 3.5 gig memory thing probably has never owned one. That card is stupidly nice for the price.

970 sounds good but not for anywhere near 200 bucks, I've seen 980's that low on the fs forums here. A 780/780TI for less would be good too.

if possible I would wait till this mining stuff is over with... prices have been jacked up so high

Just a 24" NEC monitor at 1920x1600.

seen 980s in FS/FT forums few times for around 200.

Not anytime recent. They are selling for $230+ on eBay. I'd recommend a 290 as well. I also happen to have one that is about to hit eBay but I would be willing to part with it here for a bit less so I do not have the hassle of eBay.

EVGA GTX 970, check the serial # at EVGA website using the Guest RMA page before buying - some EVGA GTX 970's have almost 2 years left on the warranty (EVGA goes by the serial #, not by who originally bought the card)

If you pick up the 290 (a good choice), just make sure you have a solid psu. My 500w wasn't up to the task.

I would say a 970 is the best bet right now. AMD cards are still inflated like crazy due to miners. 1050TI is a capable card for mid/high 1080P , but if you can stay under 200.00 for a 970 , its a much better card.
