Best thing that ever happened to Borderlands. That game looked like it was going to be overlooked with MW2 coming, now its one of the ones that gets mentioned as an alternative.

does borderlands have dedicated servers?

not true :) I see it often in the TF2 community. It's usually taken care of by an admin of that particular server (until the VAC ban goes through). Everything from wallhacks to speedhacks and aimbots.

The issue I have isn't that type of cheating (as its usually taken care of pretty quick if it's a decent server), its the people using tools to give themselfs prestige ranks and all the perks right off the bat that irritates me. Half the fun is leveling up your account and unlocking abilities/perks... if a lot of people start using that, then whats the point of playing it to earn those? Might as well just jump on board and use it too.

It's no different, although not nearly as "game breaking", as people using an idler program to unlock items in TF2

Thanks for not being a dick with your reply (some people seem to get REALLY defensive)

I know what you mean. Leveling up to get the guns, but that isn't really cheating. You wouldn't know who did it either (except for those who are lvl 55 at 4-23 in a TDM match.

Lack of choice doesn't equal a better experience.

Exactly. Freedom of choice and competition through the combined resources of the community are what have made the dedicated server/modding model so successful.

If the ping on one server is too high, you can look over the whole list and choose another. Problem solved.

If the admins on a server are a-holes, who cares? Play somewhere else. If they're really that bad, people will stop coming. Since they have a vested interest in keeping the server populated, they'll have to either pull the plug (good riddance) or change their crappy attitudes. If all else fails, you can always start your own server with your own rules and do things right.

Or say that so-and-so aspect of the game is totally overpowered and the parent company won't do anything. People will work together to make mods, often competing against other groups, until the community produces a product(s) which resolve the issue. Modding extends the game's replayability, develops community, and provides far more (and often higher quality) content than the limited resources of the parent company ever could.

This "one size fits all" approach is driven by greed, nothing more. If they're that hungry for more money, I'd sooner concede to something like in-game advertising which doesn't bother me that much.

Good thing I picked up Neo Tokyo. This is total shit and makes me sad since I loved Modern Warfare.

I've pre-ordered it instead. Looks like it could be lots of fun as I'm a little tired of TF2 (after 70,000 points!) and L4D

Having owned and played all the IW CoD's (and none of the Tryarchs) I have to say this is disappointing. Say what they will, but I see this as just an another excuse to have less to port to the PC, making the PC experience more and more consolized. That initiative can go to hell.

If this was TF3 or Counterstrike, I'd be in here QQing with the rest of you.

It's not, though. It's a port from a console developer. For those of you with PCs only, I get it, but it's not really the epic level of complaining people should make it out to be. If Valve did this with the next version of Counterstrike, by all means go ape shit.

how come i get the feeling this is going to be another spore level of piracy

I can't agree with this.

When a gamer feels that he's been 'mistreated' by a gaming company, and then says that he's going to pirate that company's game for that reason, then he's just created an excuse for himself to be a criminal.

The same can be said for a gamer who has put X-number of hours into a game and now believes that the gaming company 'owes' him something.

Doesn't matter. Stealing is stealing. Infinity Ward can do whatever it pleases. You have the right not to buy their games, or even to start a boycott campaign if you feel that that's an appropriate way to spend what little time you have on this planet, but what you don't have the right to do is steal from somebody who has worked on something.

I was considering this as my wife and I need a new game to play together. I think im going to hold off now. I really wanted CoD4 multiplayer but waited for this one. I will have to see how this goes. It sounds horrible though.

Sorry if this has been asked but how exactly are no dedicated servers supposed to stop cheating? People will find ways to cheat no matter what.

Also, who will be hosting these servers? Will IinifityWard provide servers for us or do people have to host them while they play?

I don't understand how pirating the game is a solution for anyone. Basically what you're saying is, "This game sucks with no dedicated server. I'm not buying it. I hate you IW!" But then you're going to turn around and pirate it and play it? What sense does that make? If it's still fun enough to go through the trouble of downloading it and then playing it for hours, just buy the damn thing. It's not like you're proving a point. "Ohhhhhh, Joe didn't buy it; he pirated it instead. Shit, now what are we going to do?"

It has very little to do with piracy, I doubt it'll stop anyone who wants to. IW won't provide servers, one player in the match will be hosting everyone else on their machine.

All I have to say is try playing WC3 on Bnet and see how many people lag, complain and hack to see how P2P works well. And WC3 is a RTS, where latency is acceptable.

I just won't play the game. At least not at a $60 price point. Now it's just another SP game. They can have my $20-30 in a year or so.

I didn't say piracy, I was talking about cheaters.

That sucks that somebody in game will have to host it. How players does this game support, 32? I can't see having 1 person who thinks they have a fast connection hosting a game for other people to join - then having the game end when the host has to go do homework.

No dedicated server support just does not make sense.

Comapnies don't need an excuse to stop making games for the PC. They can do so anytime they please. IW did not even have to make MW2 for the PC. Ya it stinks they got rid of dedicated servers but what do you expect from a company that now favors consoles.

How is latency acceptable in a game where split second decisions can decide the match?

I have been very critical over at their forums. I canceled my pre-order and replaced it with Bad Company 2. DICE made a statement and they will support the PC community. They will have dedicated servers. If you haven't checked out BFBC2 check it out on gametrailers.com The game looks great.

This is why buying a game solely for the multiplayer experience is stupid. One minor design choice like this moves the game from a must buy to no buy. If the game has a solid singleplayer campaign then it might be worth a purchase in my eyes, because multiplayer experiences are fickle and fleeting.

However this is shaping up to be a $20 bargain bin purchase or maybe a used purchase.

I was looking forward to this coming out, but not now. We wanted something new to play at our LAN parties, but unless we can create a dedicated server where we can control everything and get very low ping, there's no reason to pick it up.

16 player max it seems like. Straight from the IW forums. Its a straight port it seems like. This is a complete downgrade.

IW_Scriptacus wrote:The following applies to Playlists:

- the map: Not directly, though you can vote to skip maps that you dislike. Additionaly, we can update the playlists based on player feedback. (e.g. if people dislike playing Highrise in SD, we can remove it)
- the min players: Each playlist has a minimum and a maximum number of players.
- friendly fire: Also a per playlist setting; hardcore playlists tend to have FF enabled.
- weapons: All weapons are available at all times in all playlists.

To clarify; a Playlist is a set of gametypes, maps and rules (player count, health, friendly fire, gametype, bomb timers, score limit, etc...). So we make the "Search and Destroy" playlist. It's regular SD, 12-16 players, no respawns, etc... Then we can also make a "Hardcore Search and Destroy" playlist. It's SD, 12-16 players, no hud, low health, etc... But we can also make a "Hardcore Team Tactical" playlist. It's got all the standard hardcore rules, but it's 6-12 players, has smaller maps, and the gametypes might be Hardore SD, Elimination TDM, etc...
All of this is stuff we can update very easily.

Private Match:
Pick any map, gametype, and rules that you want. Play with as many or as few people as you want (up to the max limit). People can join in progress as they please. You can't disable specific weapons, but it's your server and if someone isn't playing by your rules you can boot them.

There's also the possibility this will be expanded upon in future patches. (I can't promise this of course, cause that's not my call to make)

And on that note, try to keep in mind that we're not just throwing this whole system out there and then washing our hands of it. We will be watching, playing and evaluating what works and what doesn't. The nice thing about PC vs the other platforms is that it's a lot easier to patch after we ship.

Is there no option to host a game over the LAN? Or is it all just internet? If it's capable of LAN I can't really see where a dedicated server would make much difference. Everyone should be getting pretty low pings.

I kind of agree with what he said about TF3 or Counter-strike. I guess it's just because I've never been much into COD games. TF3 and Counter-strike are only multiplayer so it'd be different if they pulled this same shit.

Way to totally miss the point.

Console shooter, single player and online (MW2) -> Ported to PC with console style MP = should be no surprise, should be no whining.

Online only, PC only (or primarily), multiplayer-only shooter -> suddenly without dedicated servers = massive whining justified.

If you can't see the difference, I don't know what more I can do. If they ported Halo 3 to PC and it had Xbox 360 style matchmaking, would you call it an outrage and say they turned their back on the community?
