Multi monitor setups with large panels - what works best?

I've been doing a lot of looking through the "post your setup" thread, but it's not always easy to tell from that where the primary working position is.

Currently I only have a single monitor, but can see real benefits to two... not sure I'd want to get into 3 yet since I'd need another video card.

But the question I have is, when you have for example a 24" widescreen as a starting point... where do you find that a second monitor works best? A smaller monitor off to the left or right side, perhaps in portrait mode... or two identical widescreen monitors centered on the table (meaning you need to look left or right to see either)?

And what about two identical 24" monitors, one centered and one vertical on the side - is 24" too big for off-side portrait use?

I like the idea that identical monitors would give the same image characteristics, but if you don't feel like sitting more than an arm's length away from them I worry that it's simply "too much".
