While we give Josh Walrath a lot of flack over his failed JoshTekk project, the reality is that Josh is an incredibly smart guy when it comes to technology and what is happening deep down inside today's CPU and GPUs. He has published an editorial on PCPer this morning that takes a look at what some are seeing as an attack on AMD yesterday, by CTS-Labs. Our thoughts are that the entire scenario reeks of being a hit-job of one sort or another. Josh puts aside the tinfoil hat and discusses the true implications of the possible security vulnerabilities.

CTS-Labs was formed in 2017 in Israel. Very little was known about this group before today. When they announced the news they already had a website (AMDFlaws.com) along with several videos and presentations pertaining to these AMD vulnerabilities. Possibly unrelated to the group we saw Viceroy Research, a South African firm that has a history of releasing bad news about companies while shorting their stocks, quickly put up their “AMD Obituary” page that claims they expect AMD’s share price to drop to $0 and they will be forced to go into bankruptcy proceedings. Now, we do not know if these two entities are connected, but Viceroy put up their findings very quickly if not at the same time as CTS-Labs released their findings.

    Wow. Bad analogy time.

I guess we can make up a vulnerability, let's call it UserShock!, for Active Directory: By logging into a Domain Controller with Domain Administrative rights, a malicious user can enable Administrative rights on all users. This allows all users to do whatever the hell they want.

The whole thing sounded like a cross between extortion (we are giving AMD 24 hours----Which they didn't)
and an Intel scare tactic. ("Ryzenfall", "AMD should stop sale of Epic and Ryzen processors--for the public safety")

    Jesus.
    How about:
If you buy an AMD processor, we will club a baby seal?

This is a bullshit "exploit" and the SEC needs to intervene.

Kyle, looks like this should be another "project" for you and [H]Team to really take a hard look at... Outside of GamerNexus, I haven't seen a lot of other sites really diving into this story and credibility of CTS Labs.

i think the only thing missing from all this is that when you go to their webpages to see this "news" it installs and runs a crypto miner

I honestly don't think unless you have boots on the ground in Israel, and a healthy contact list there, I would likely not come up with anything other than "coincidences." Intel is the largest single employer in Israel currently and heavily entrenched with the government that is not going to raise a finger at anything that would point to wrongdoings by Intel. Brick wall. Well played, IMO. Guerilla PR at its best.

    Lay the smack down

    edit.

    Looks like it's a no.

AMD is not down on this news, the market as a whole is down today. Everyone realizes this is an attempt at FUD against AMD by stock market players using a Meltdown/Spectre scare tactic that is fresh in everyone's mind.

That's not too bad, and it could fluctuate like that daily just from the market. The goal of something like this is a huge drop.

If they shorted with a ton of capital, they'd be putting up a lot of risk. If you don't want to put up a lot of risk, you short with less capital, but you hope for a huge drop. If this is a hit job to drive the stock down, I'd wager they're betting on a larger drop. You could get 2-3% on a normal day.

I did and of course I looked up the young Gordon Bombay. That dude (Brock Pierce) has a shady past - straight #MeToo movement stuff (child sexual abuse) that made him and his Dotcom co-founders flee the country.

I got a chuckle out of the real Boiler Room commercial that exists. Like seriously? How brazen do you have to be to have that created.

    See?

Taking a closer look at yesterday’s options activity, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.(NASDAQ:AMD) puts continued to dominate the shares after reports of a security flaw surfaced.

AMD has been trending down since the end of January. Actually much steeper the beginning of February than now. If you want to believe the downward trend is due to the CTS press release, it is probably as good a reason as any. Bottom line, AMD most likely does not have anything to fix.

My favorite line in the article:
"I just found a flaw in all of the hardware space. No device is secure: if you have physical access to a device, you can just pick it up and walk away. Am I a security expert yet?"

    https://blog.trailofbits.com/2018/03/15/amd-flaws-technical-summary/

"There is no immediate risk of exploitation of these vulnerabilities for most users. Even if the full details were published today, attackers would need to invest significant development efforts to build attack tools that utilize these vulnerabilities. This level of effort is beyond the reach of most attackers"

Trail of Bits that was hire by CTS to investigate the flaws.
