MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GAMING X 4G Review @ [H]

What a blow to AMD. It kicked 460 out of the competition.
The 460 kicked itself out of the competition. It performs worse than a GTX 950 and costs nearly as much as a RX 470. Then again the 1050Ti is also poorly priced. No reason to buy either card really.

Wait until BF deals anyway....only a month away and should be able to pick up a better card. Hech the FS forum should be teaming with great used cards.

Err what
2GB 460 is $99

Why is the 1050Ti poorly priced?

It should be fine with Civ 6. It doesn't seem like you need something really strong for that game.

I was reading that a system at the min spec (hers is Phenom II x6 1045T, 8GB, XFX5770) will run around 20fps. Bump up to the 7970 I just pulled, and then she's maybe 30fps. Yes, I know its an RTS, but when you're moving the map around, nothing is worse than that horrid skipping.

It should be fine with Civ 6. It doesn't seem like you need something really strong for that game.

You don't - any rig that can play ANNO 2205 (such as mine below) can handle Civ VI, as the previous two Civ games were designed with iGPUs in mind - and Civ VI didn't move.

Actually, there is LOTS of reason to buy GTX1050/Ti - it does depend on what you have now, though. If you still have Kepler, Fermi, or a GT 7xx/6xx, any of those is worth the step up. If you have a prebuilt non-AIO that has a GT 7xx (and you have room in the case), those are candidates also. And the MSI card reviewed - which is the top of the line - barely costs half a mint. I'm NOT looking that tall - what I'm looking at is the slightly cheaper (topping out $5USD less) $149USD-$159USD range (without rebates - I'll be paying either via reloadable credit card or cash), but with dual fans - there are six cards in that range @ Newegg - two from Gigabyte, and singles from EVGA, PNY, ASUS, and MSI (that last is already OOS at $149.99).

Hmmm I think you guys need to do a re-evaluation of the current market. This card you reveiwed is $165 and you can get a RX 470 for $170.

I think $5 more for about what 15-30% more performance is totally worth it.

I think the Gold Award is a little jumping the gun?

Now if you compared te $139 1050ti to a 470 RX, then yea a $30 difference then yea maybe. I want to see if a stock 1050ti can hit 1900!

I don't think there is single stock 1050 ti lol. but just incase you want to see overclocks, looks like many of them are hitting 1900.

Sooo no reference cards.....interesting. Looks like there are a few $139 versions too. Nice!

yeah looks like nV scrapped the FE edition for this card, good riddance, but even the cards without an extra power connector they are getting up to 1900mhz, but they don't seem to be able to maintain that as the card gets down clocked to 1750mhz or so.

Waiting for Arctic to release a cooler twice the size of the card :)

Lol wtf

companies have released watercooling for this card, don't know why lol but they have.

Not too familiar with instant gratification?
Same reason Ford released the Fiesta ST.
Budget solutions that you can have fun with now, and upgrade/tweak with later.

still its like a ford fiesta with racing strips, might look good but seriously! lol.

If you already got $150-$170 lying around, why the heck not save up a little bit more for a 1060 / 480?

I could see $150 max for the 1050Ti / 460, and definitely not even that much for the 460.

The 1050ti msrp is 139 which you can get some versions at this price, this specific 1050ti which seems not really worth the 165 that its listed at with its mediocre overclock,

Yeah, credit to Nvidia, this is a hard launch with tons of cards in-stock, most of which are bus-powered and at the MSRP or no more than $10 more for overclocks:

GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, Desktop Graphics Cards, Video Cards & Video Devices, Components - Newegg.com

Just because most of our favorite sites got this overpriced monstrosity to review doesn't mean the rest of the lineup sucks.

Pretty much - it's why I'm perfectly willing to go lower than top-end.

Where I have been curious is what is the OC differential between the top end and not quite the top end - so far, there differential is little or none.

I think what most of you really WANT is 4K and/or VR at that price; however, what you are forgetting is that neither comes into play at this price.

Then there is the cost of VR and/or 4K display hardware - add another $400USD or more for either (let alone both) - both will add another $850USD.

There's lots of wish among the critics - not a lot of logic.

The HardwareUnboxed video review, however, is a massive jaw-dropper - they reviewed the bottom-end MSI GTX1050 - and showed the actual gameplay next to the benchmarks. I was like "This is the BOTTOM end?"

I am looking at the middle end for airflow reasons; the middle end has dual fans and is full-length - most of the options in the middle end - despite those two gotta-haves - don't require a 6-pin power feed; while my current card (sig below) DOES use one, not needing it DOES have an impact (favorably) on the electric bill.

Negative. Not one that can be seen.

Negative. Not one that can be seen.

It depends on the cost per wattage used compared to what you have now - in most cases, the cost of electricity will drop because the amount of electricity actually used will drop - or are you implying that as you use less electricity per unit of time, you will use your computer more (basically negating your savings in electricity)?

Indeed it is, it's great for consumers (not so much for reviewers! :p ) These reviews don't get made overnight :p

That said, maybe we can do a follow-up comparing with RX 470 to answer the question now that the price has dropped. All your bases, will be covered (and belong to us) Had to get that in there :p

Just to let ya'll know, a follow-up is in progress to compare to RX 470.

so this is the shit that will be in the next gen of laptops. It's a little better than the gtx960M

You mean It's a little better than the GTX 970M.

The GTX 960M was a down-clocked GTX 750 Ti, whereas the GTX 970M was a card with similar performance to the GTX 960 desktop card. Why do you think the GTX 950M and the 960M were available in every thin gaming laptop under the sun? Cause sub-50w.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M

Please make a comparison to the vanilla 1050 as well.
Some reviewers suggest that the plain 1050 is a better buy with the Ti providing some ~5% added performance at a 20% higher price.

Here in Sweden right now the retail pricing is such that (factory overclocked versions of):
In the Green corner we have:
The 2GB 1050 @ ~1500 SEK (not yet in stock), the 4GB 1050 Ti @ ~1800 SEK and the 3GB 1060 @ ~2200 SEK.
In the Red corner we have:
The 2GB RX460 (stock) @ ~1100 SEK, the 2GB RX460 (OC) @ ~1400 SEK, the 4GB RX460 (OC) @ ~1600, the 4GB RX470 @ ~2000 SEK, the 4GB RX480 @ ~2300 SEK.

My conclusion this far, regarding this (1000-2000 SEK) price range:
Best performance/cost ratio: GF GTX 1050.
Best performance at <80W TDP: GF GTX 1050Ti. (A worthy successor to the GTX 750Ti.)
Best performance: Radeon RX470.

We have no plans to review it currently.

A most useful article. I would have liked to have seen more made of the card not needing additional power in the conclusion, as it's one of the key selling points of the card.

I mean that unless you have a rock solid bill every month, that you aren't going to notice it.
Do the math.

$164.99 for a 1050ti is beyond dumb. Gold Award for that price when an RX 470 will mop the floor with it.

Sorry, but comparing this overpriced 1050ti to a doorstop 460 was lame......

99% of your video card reviews/comparisons are great, this one falls into that 1% crap bucket.

The highest price 1050 Ti showing on Newegg is the Gigabyte @ $169.99. Crazy.

They were comparing it with $150 Rx460, so gold award is fair game here.

Anyways, i can find a fancy 11.5kR 1050 Ti in russia already, but it now compares against 13.5kR 1060 3G. Ehm, not sure i can make a choice here, when difference is right about $30.

I wonder how many more posters will come into the thread without reading it (or the full review) to complain that a 470 is close to this card's price so it should have been compared to that instead of a 460. I'm thinking at least another five.

I personally think it's ridiculous that they gave the FuryX such a poor review, I mean you can find them for around $250 and it comes close to the $650 980Ti! Madness! What were HardOCP thinking by giving the 980Ti a gold award!?!?! /sarcasm.

That's my point, why?

Newegg has several 4GB overclocked RX460's for less than $120.

Here is just one example of a 4GB overclocked RX 470 for only $169.........just a $5 difference than the 1050ti they used in the comparison. The RX 460 I linked above is a whopping $45 CHEAPER than the 1050ti. Again, they should not have used a 460 in this comparison.

What ever happened to performance per dollar comparisons. Has [H] ever done those on a chart before? At this point I believe that it needs to be implemented.

As an example back 8-4-16 [H] reviewed the RX 470 and actually put in a post mortem editor's note

Editor's Notes: As we are going to publish this review this morning, this Red Devil RX 470 card went on sale at Newegg. However, it is not priced at the MSRP that Powercolor informed us of, $199. Newegg has this exact model card listed for at $179. This changes a few things in our eyes, and throws a monkeywrench into a lot of our conclusion statements above. Brent had given this card a "Silver" award, but with it being priced this low, at $179 we both think the Devil RX 470 is fitting of a "Gold" assuredly. This card being $20 less expensive than the stock RX 480 4GB also makes choices a bit more clear if you are gaming on a budget as well. The Devil RX 470 is a great card, at a great price for 1080p gaming.

If a competitor's custom card is 20-25% faster and selling for +$5 over this review's model, how can we trust the reviewers conclusion of value per dollar here? I mean above there is a clean 'however' comment here. Also, if this review was to showcase the "postential" power of a stock 1050 Ti at $139 then why not underclock it to stock levels instead of using a $165 factory overclocked card to base the decision on?

At this point I really have to go with my gut instinct and call hype train here.
