Watching pr0n in Utah makes me ill, now to figure out how to get them to cover my disability. How was I to know that the Internet pumping petabytes of pr0n into my house would turn me into a sick person? Seriously this is more about child pr0n, at least right now it is, but what about next week?

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah became the first state in the country to declare pornography a public health crisis, and called on the industry and businesses Tuesday to help keep "evil, degrading, addictive" materials away from children.

Utah = Mormon...I mean does this actually surprise anyone? Once again another law from the government that over reaches their power in the cause of "It's for the children".

For all that is stupid about Utah, they have some pretty good laws regarding guns. They are consistently one of the highest rated States when it comes to being gun friendly. That alone is a reason to move there, not sure it would rank above Arizona, Wyoming or Georgia, but it would probably be 5 or 6 on my list of places if I were to ever leave CO. I freaking hate the stupid gun laws they recently implemented here, and fuck pot.

That's probably because back in the day, they got ran out of Missouri. Mormons also like to have food and supplies for a year stashed in their homes.
If they want to keep the children free of corruptive addicting influences, maybe they should ban preaching religion to children?

RIF: They are concerned about children getting access to material which could alter then permanently as their brains are not developed enough to process it correctly. Not child Pr0n.

But I do agree it is a health hazard. And while you may want to laugh at Mormon's and their Whack-a-do beliefs, one thing they DO stand for which I support is the sanctity of the family and moral values. The Mormon church takes a very active role in Boy Scouts. And that I will support, despite their other beliefs.

If you are thinking Pr0n isn't a growing problem in the world, maybe you should view this Ted-X talk:

I'm not saying you can't and shouldn't look at Pr0n. But after looking at some studies, the evidence becomes clear. The affects of pr0n on the brain in how it short circuits and releases dopamine has similar characteristics of people addicted to drugs. You need to be cognoscente of this fact every time you go to an adult website.

Almost anything can be addictive. Porn addiction is a thing, but the vast majority of porn viewers are not addicts. Also, you want to know how to minimize the porn children see? BE A FUCKING PARENT AND WATCH WHAT YOUR KID DOES ON THE COMPUTER! You will never 100% prevent it, just like you couldn't stop kids of our generation from randomly getting a hold of Playboys or randomly coming across a scrambled porn channel. We need to get over this "put kids in a protective bubble" mentality. Yes, the world is a scary place, but what good does protecting children from reality do? The government stepping in to play nanny all the time is stupid and something parents should fight against.

The local shock jocks here in Utah are loving this porn talk. All the politicians running for governor have been tweeting links to porn sites in a fight with Larry Flynt and its HILARIOUS. Even one of the big time film critics here was tweeting to the politicians to STFU because they don't know what they're talking about

If your only reason to moving to a state is due to gun laws you really need to get your priorities straight.

Religion is not inherently bad for society.....no more then society itself is. Even if you believe that science proves religion false in some way, that still takes away nothing from the purpose religion often serves.

I am not a religious person, but I still respect the purpose that it has in our history. The only thing that's corrupt in our society is the humans. Anything they come up with has the possibility and likelihood of being corrupt as well.

Even science will become corrupt eventually. While American history books do not teach it in grade school, 100 years ago there was a large movement in this country by the "enlightened" to enforce eugenics. By the standards of science, eugenics is a very logical and practical policy. It was only because of compassion of other people's rights that they were dissuaded. I can tell you that science will teach you nothing about compassion.

That study only counted people who paid for pornographic subscriptions online with a credit card. It didn't consider purchases of pornography in other formats (pay per view television, magazines, etc.), people who paid for online pornographic content without using a credit card, and people who surf free porn tube sites. Finally, it assumes the political affiliation of the subscribers based on the state they reside in. No state's population is 100% of any single political predilection, and red states like Arizona, Texas, and Utah have their own liberal enclaves (Tucson, Phoenix, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and Summit County in Utah, for example).

What if it's a liberal who chooses to move to Connecticut or New York because of their gun control laws?

Kinda reminds me of "97% of all scientist believe in global warming".

Absolutely true. It is well known in the hotel industry that pay per view TV porn is in high demand during religious conferences and gatherings.

It's often repeated, but I've never seen a source demonstrating the link between demand for hotel porn and religious conferences.

Wendy Davis received 39% of the votes in the 2014 gubernatorial race in Texas. Now granted, nearly 40% of those who vote in Texas is a lot of people, even for a mid-term election, but that's besides the point when the overwhelming majority of adults in Texas (as in every other state) don't vote, whether it's due to apathy, circumstances, lack of faith in the electoral system, etc. To illustrate, Greg Abbott received 2,790,227 votes, 59% of the election results, while Wendy Davis received 1,832,254, which is 39% of the results. The total number of people in Texas who are at least 18 years of age is 21,065,380. When only 22% of a state's adult population even votes, and when the winner of a state's gubernatorial race wins just 13% of that population's vote, then I don't see how it is possible to guess whether a state's resident who happens to purchase online pornography is even politically involved, much less which party or political ideology that person favors. The study's headline depends too much on assumption.

Utah always leads the porn consumption surveys put out by the big porntube companies.

Why? You have a strong religious community that frowns upon certain sexual acts or promiscuous behavior. People try to find an avenue for their pent up sexual energy.

I guess the Swiss (I think it's them) have a drive through brothel now. So there's that. Humans are weird.

Not surprising. Anytime a subject like this comes up, no matter the country. It's always to 'protect the Children'

Fuck off government.

Why don't we remove all warnings from illegal drugs, alcohol and cigarettes while we are at it? Why should the general public be informed of the risk?

Ummmm when you have a potential 1:6 being addicted...yeah you have a risk.

When you have tens of thousands of people looking up "porn addiction" PER DAY, yes you have a problem. (Watch the video)

I give Ted-X Talks the same amount of credence that the company themselves give them: Zero.

I don't know what porn addiction means. maybe someone can explain it to me. Can we define addiction as having some sort of consequences to life and family? If someone is spanking the monkey every night before bed, yeah, that may be an addiction but so what?

Maybe a complaint is about how society views women as objects. but that shit has been going on way before porn.

It's a google stat based on their search engine...and you didn't look at the video did you? Or examine the researchers credentials did you?

Sure we had access to scrambled adult channels as kids, and playboys. I got access to maybe 1 playboy as a kid before 18. Today kids go to their friends house when not home, or travel down near a free wifi hotspot with their buddies on their tablets. And the !@#$@# they find today is a lot worse then the stuff we grew up with. And there's a lot more of it.

The problem with pr0n addiction is you may not even realize you have it till it's too late. It may creep into work. It may creep into your marriage and your get caught...or worse.

Google search statistics are kind of pointless. Okay. Tens of thousands of people look up "porn addition". Compared to the 318.9 million people that live in the United States. Is there solid, scientific, proof that those numbers are made up of people either PROVEN to be addicted or have loved ones that are PROVEN to be addicted. There needs to be long term, scientific, studies. Making grand assumptions based on limited, fairly short term, data is the sign of a bad scientist.

Why the hell do you let a kid have unrestricted access to any device capable of freely accessing the web? Also, it's still not the government's fucking job to play nanny. If parents are unwilling or unable to properly take care of and raise their kids THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Yeah and my parents didn't have any of that adult stuff when I was growing up. But I knew my buddy had it. And he wasn't supposed to have it either.

See the problem? If there is a way and kids want it, they will go for it.

The researcher didn't draw any conclusion. She just quoted the numbers. But if someone is looking "Pr0n addiction"...(10's of thousands per day) I think there's a more than reasonable chance they or someone they know has a problem. Even if it's 10%, that's 1500 / day * 365 days / year....you do the math.

Luckily my pr0n is HardOcp and toy models.

Do I think the government should have the right to regulate it? NOPE

But I think they government should make it mandatory to have a big freaking medical disclaimer on every page with resources to get help.

We do it for gambling.

And we put warnings on cigarettes, medicine, and paint cans, and alcohol.

Let people make an informed opinion.

If you do use prOn I'm not condemning you. (I'm not)

But heed these warning signs:
You would rather look at pr0n then have sex with partner
You have fantasies when you are with your partner reproducing what you saw in sex scene
You find yourself engaging in sexual activities at work
You can't stay away from adult websites two months at a time.
You find yourself staying up late at night hiding your activities
You don't get enough sleep because of pr0n surfing.

Good thing you don't need to be smart or informed to have an opinion.

That's why it's up to the parents to actually parent their kids. We need to do a better job of teaching parents how to monitor what their kids are doing. Not with all the damn scare tactics that groups love to use, but with actual lessons and actual help.

Challenge Accepted!

<Facepalm>
maybe that should be
<Towel palm>

I just need a shower reading this thread with some of you pervs....and hold the towels please. <twitches nervously>

Sexually repressed, can't unwind with a beer, and loaded to the gills? Sounds like a good combo....

Just because some people have an addiction problem, doesn't mean the product is automatically the problem. Comparing things like cigarettes and drugs which have an Actual chemical effect on the body to watching something is honestly trying to compare Apples to tin foil. If someone is addicted to porn, it is because they had a mental problem that manifested itself in an addiction and if it wasn't porn it would of been something else. Honestly that ted talk is absolute garbage and the pseudo-science bullshit they used to justify this is worse.

As you say, the problem isn't porn itself. I say the problem is how freaking sexually repressed our society is. From school to adult hood we're taught that "nudity is bad" and "sex is evil". No one wants to actually discuss issues and instead wants to hide everything behind close doors and pretend none of us fuck. Instead of teaching abstinence only in schools, we should be open and honest with kids, especially teenagers. Instead of focusing only on "never have sex, sex will lead to babies and death so you should never ever have sex" we need to actually teach proper protection and have an honest, open, dialog about pornography. We need to stop pretending that the average 15 year old male hasn't seen porn or started jerking off. I assume it's the same for a number of females as well, though that is something I'm not entirely sure on. We also need to stop pretending that using your hand or some other masturbatory instrument is a bad thing.

I think I'm done ranting now.
