HI all -

We have a server running SuSe 10 SP1 on a single CPU blade with a low amount of memory. If I were to pull the HDD out of this server and throw it into a different blade with 4 CPUs and a lot more memory than the current server will the OS recognize (and be able to use) the newer, faster hardware?

Any info would be great!!

Thanks!!

It's been a while since I've used a Suse distro, but I'm petty sure the default kernel supports SMP. If it doesn't though, it'll boot up only seeing 1 CPU and you can just install a kernel that does.

In my experience, unless you have a custom-compiled kernel, moving Linux between machines is pretty painless - way easier than moving Windows installs.

One issue that I can think of, not sure if this is a problem anymore, but sometimes the hard drive may get renamed on the system, for example it might be /dev/hda on your system, but the new one will see that drive as /dev/sda

Just a consideration, though to fix it is not that big a deal.
