Motherboard w/o AHCI + SSD

No, it would not. You could buy a more modern and reliable model/brand. I recommend Samsung.

My motherboard does not support AHCI, I wonder if it would cause SSD to fail early?

No that did not cause the drive to die.

If I find a replacement, is there a way to make it last longer?

Get a better brand. Samsung, Intel or Crucual are a few of the most reliable drive manufacturers.

Also make sure that you have backups because any storage device (SSD, hard drive, tape ...) can die at any time regardless of your usage.

Your drive died because OCZ SSDs are garbage. Well, not that good brands are perfect, but OCZ is bad.

IDE mode won't kill a drive, just lower the performance.
