Most Parents Believe Games Contribute To Real Violence

With the constant bombardment of "games causing violence" message by the media, you'll see more and more people believing in this nonsense without verifying it themselves. That's the reason why you seize the TV and Radio stations first when you invade a country.

depends who you ask... unltra conservative, right wing, tighty whitey wearing, bible bashing folks would probably think so...

Funny, most the foaming mouth libs in LA are running around screaming about violent video games and guns as the cause of all our woes.

But whatever.

It comes from both sides. I remember Tipper Gore smashing rap albums back in the 90's.

Newsflash, most parents are complete morons. I feel more and more alienated every day as a parent who seems to have the capacity to think and not be a reactionary nutjob. PTA meetings make me want to strangle most of these people. Some of the crap I hear spewing out of peoples mouths at school events just leaves me speechless at the unbridled stupidity.

" Most Parents Believe Games Contribute To Real Violence"

-haha, sweet!! They should be scared of the younger generations and start handing all their hi ranking jobs over to us (well, I'm 30). Also "most gamers believe watching idiots on news channels, contribute to dumber populations"

its funny that most of these same parents are the ones that let video games do the babysitting instead of telling these kids to go out and figure out something to do. Man do I hate that my daughter did not get to experience the same stuff I did as a kid.

Um how can they not? Keep the crap out of your house if you don't want it there. Speaking of rap in the 90s. If rap taught me not to trust a bitch why couldn't it teach me other things?....Of course is has an impact, you guys are retards.

Depends on what you mean by contribute.

If someone were to say violent games make someone less sensitive to real word violence by at least 1%, most people would be crazy not to agree. Don't confuse this with being more inclined towards violence.

Now throw that equation on an unstable person, there are infinite variations of types of people out there. Who knows what triggers the crazy in some people. It could be a raindrop, it could be the shape of a table.

I would have to say someone who has the foreknowledge of violence, the types of violent actions available to them, and the most effective ways to do it, is more likely to commit violence when they "lose it", than someone who doesn't.

So do violent games contribute to real world violence... probably, but only on a level that is not discernible enough to matter. Probably safe to say 99.9% of real world violence would have still happened irregardless.

I'm not sure how this can constitute as sad, as the proliferation of mass media everywhere, you practically have to keep your family hiding in a fallout shelter to keep them from seeing violence media of some form. Statistically it will affect someones kids wither they were a good parent or bad parent.

The tricky part is if or any kind of regulation could have an measurable effect on death and crime statistics. Its so murky of an area I doubt there could be any clear consensus on passing any laws.

Did anyone else actually real the results and questions? The results are so full of BS that it is laughable. Anyone that takes these results seriously is a moron.

I asked my parents, they said they don't believe that on bit. Go figure!

The same knee jerk reaction that led to condemning everything from Elvis, rock music, and the Beatles for rotting kids minds. The problem is it's easier (and cheaper) for politicians to spread this kind of propaganda than tackling the real causes - poverty, unemployment, social agencies that are underfunded, understaffed, and poorly qualified to handle domestic problems, schools that are similarly handicapped to provide proper education, the list goes on and on. It doesn't help that not only does parenting come without a manual,it has no basic requirements either. Anyone can have a kid,few these days seem qualified to.

I'm 40 years old and a gamer. I have been since Atari days. I do think that games play some what of a role in how kids behave nowadays

"somewhat of a role"

Question: What made men and boys want to see the gladiators kill each other with sharp objects or get eaten by a tiger in Rome days?

Human nature or video games?

True enough. Personally, I attribute the parenting issue to the breakdown of the large family unit. There's little to no extended family help anymore, and those who do want to help raise the children are regulated to do some babysitting but given a "don't tell me how to raise my kids, just watch them".

So am I, and I turned out fine.

The way some people talk I should be ritualistically killing people on the weekends so I can wallpaper my house with their skin or something.

Is it just me, or was there more gore in Doom 1 (which I played as a teen) than the new Call of Duty?

I despise these hysterias too, but give me a break. What makes you so qualified to determine who is fit to raise a child? Does your criteria include "must respond to polls in ways I like"? Why has it become chic to sneer at the majority of people in order to place oneself above them? These proclamations about who should be breeding hearken back to a time, coming up on a century ago, where everyone loved this new idea called eugenics. Perfect for the "most people are stupid" crowd...but it didn't end well. In fact...it led to more violence than video games could ever cause.

Can't we nip that shit in the bud before it comes back and history repeats itself?

Is it just me, or was there more gore in Doom 1 (which I played as a teen) than the new Call of Duty?
Doom is more likely to be ok by todays standards. Fantasy world killing demons. Call of Duty is a "realistic" shooter that simulates a "real world situation." My mom wasn't crazy about me playing Doom on my old 386 back in the day.

They're barking becuase of the realism. I personally don't think that a game is going to create violence in a person, but with some of these messed up kids it can't help.

Nope, not one person I know like this thinks this. They may not allow violent video games in their homes, but it is not because they think they will cause violence.

Most parents are stupid.

It's really sad when parents go after video games instead of gun control. Some have even advocated to try and save the right to own a gun over a video game.

I say we should go with Titus's suggestion. Because for the first few years, a lot of us are going to die. Hopefully more gun owners then not.

" unltra conservative, right wing, tighty whitey wearing, bible bashing folks would probably think so... "

No, we don't. The belief that video games are responsible and not the person is a purely left wing thing.

Also, if 75% of parent REALLY believed that. I mean acutally believed it... only 1/4 of homes would have any violent video games in them. It would make it tricky for kids to sneak out to a friends house that has them to play.

OBVIOUSLY NOT THE CASE.

Parents are paying lip service to the poll they were given so they don't stick out or rock the boat. More concerned about their politically correct image than to risk answering that question the way they really believe. Look at what parents are DOING, not what they SAY.

Although a direct contribution is not accurate there have been other studies that indicate younger children tend to play more violently after watching violent shows or playing violent games ... your brain can also issue endorphin's when you are playing highly active games (like some of the more violent ones)

Based on those studies the age requirements we place on some games restricting them to older players (similar to movie ratings which do the same thing) would seem to be appropriate ... but as others have noted, if you are mentally and physically healthy then the worst violent entertainment should do is to desensitize you to violent images (real world violence introduces additional sensory inputs that would likely over ride any desensitization ;) )

Way to bring more unnecessary fud into the conversation.

The ignorance people display is simply astounding.

Surveys drawing conclusions from a pitiful number of data points make me feel more violent towards others than a video game ever has. Maybe it's time we ban surveys too.

Wasn't that the NRA (which is obviously more of a right wing organization) saying that video games were the cause of the gun violence after the Sandy Hook shootings?

You brought it on yourself by attacking the 2nd Amendment in the first place. That was the major mistake. Now that you've opened Pandora's box by attacking the Constitution, every crackpot with an ax to grind against something they don't like is going to come out of the woodwork.

You've got only yourself to blame.

I'll give you that one as the NRA's PR is just a fucking disgrace. They even suggested that we should have armed guards at every school. Fuck you. How about we send students and teachers to jail and have them learn there. The facilities are already built and are super secure, and there are plenty of high school drop out security guards with experience there, no need to waste taxpayer money on new ones.

I'm all for my right to own guns, but sometimes I cringe at what some of these zealous idiots say.

I really liked the "93% believe that left unsupervised..." yet there's all these problems, but if you ask them they're probably in the "oh not my Johnny" crowd because it's other people who are the bad parents

I think the right correlation is that Video Games don't "cause" things ... they clearly affect us or we wouldn't like to play them ... a good game will have those endorphins flowing ... a really good game might kick in a little epinephrine too ... however, these chemicals don't cause you to do anything
