I keep seeing people asking about DDR3. So I asked myself...each memory is different, so far. They do not fit in the same socket.

Are there mobo's out now that have DDR2 and separate DDR3 sockets?

From what I read:

Q. Can DDR3 DIMMs be plugged into DDR2 sockets or vice versa?

A. No. Memory modules (Unbuffered, Registered, Small Outline DIMMs) have a special “key” or notch in their connector. These keys must align with a key in the memory socket to allow the module to be inserted. All DDR3 and DDR2 module types are keyed differently.

there will undoubtably be motherboards that support both ddr2 and ddr3 by having two slots for each, just as there were back during the ddr1 to ddr2 transition...

whether we'll see the same thing for amd remains to be seen, since they will be moving to a new socket, AM3, but apparently the AM3 chips will have a ddr2 memory controller and should be compatible with AM2 boards, so we MIGHT see ddr2+ddr3 am3 boards... but i doubt it.
