Whoa, this guy is pretty upset over this Modern Warfare 3 promotion that gives players extra XP for buying Mtn Dew and Doritos. The funny part is, he's not mad about the childhood obesity part, he's mad because this "unholy" alliance gives you an unfair advantage in the game.

The promotion is called “Rank Up XP,” and the long and short of it is that by buying certain Pepsi products, namely Mountain Dew and Doritos, players can redeem codes in the packaging for Double XP time in Modern Warfare 3. A 20 oz gets you 15 minutes, a 12 pack gets you 45, and so on.

Why Pepsi? Wouldn't be so out of place if it was one of these instead.

I'm not prestiging this time. You'll have guys max prestige with everything unlocked day one. What's the point?

Not sure if this happens on consoles too.

Oh, I love mountain dew anyways. This is just an added bonus.

Out of all of the dick moves that Activision has pulled...this is the one to get pissy about... eesh.

Ok...I'm not an MP player so what is XP? Is it like experience points or extra play time, etc...????

This is absolutely brilliant marketing. I guarantee that they will find upped sales numbers from this. I would think that teenagers and twentysomethings would scoop this up like mad.

Blizzard should take note and offer something like this for WoW. Imagine the sales figures.

For cranky folks: why would you care what level other players are? No real advantage is given. A level 1 person can still kill a level 70.

Sounds like Double XP for X amount of time that the codes last.
you input 10 hours of codes and you will be getting double XP for 10 hours of in-game time.

I like the idea of having marketing campaigns such as this. It's not like they get unlimited nukes while playing MP. If I only played MW, I would have double XP for life. Can't seem to shake the Mnt Dew addiction...

Great now kids have even MORE incentive now to turn into butterballs.

I would agree thought that as soon as MW3 turned into a "pay to play" experience where anyone with more money than skill can get into it, it doomed the game. (lets' face it it was probably doomed long ago)

What ever happened to releasing a fun, fair, and awesome game and letting the best man win? These days it seems any kid with mommy and daddy's credit card can buy their way to the top. And not even realizing "omg I've spent over 500 dollars on little crap over the course of 10 months for this game"

Blizzards was actually more fun, with the red and blue mt.dew fueled battlebots that fought each other as you ran around the world.

As for no real advantage ... I will agree if it's just the XP that gets doubled ... but if it's the actual XP points that are doubled then it's a huge advantage, with unlocking new guns and killstreaks quicker.

Blizzard already does something similar in WoW using trading cards you can buy at Gamestop. You can get items in-game from entering a code from cards you get from a deck, like mounts or resources or whatever.

Scary part will be kids jacking Mountan Dew and dorito's to get the codes. I could care less, every release has some kid figuring out a bug or cheat on release day and posting it on youtube so the other million people will do it. :p

Any game that sells a means to bypass a game mechanic has basically admitted that game mechanic isn't there to make the experience more fun. Instead, the exp mechanic was introduced (or changed, probably by slowing progression down) to force players to undergo some annoying, tedious leveling unless they buy a second product. That's the problem I have with sleazy schemes like this - they lead to bad game design and poorer games.

Modern Warfare, as a series, has been all over sleazy mechanics and misused DLC from day one. It's a big part of why I've never even tried the series, despite being a fan of this type of game.

I am pissed that all the tools for a MP shooter are not there to begin with.

The whole new unlock era is borderline and titles are going across the line. With older titles like BF2, the unlocks were basically a "variation" which is acceptable. Though still not quite right though imho, those variations can mean advantage to certain players. Players that would suck with stock LMG, but give them an accurate, slower rate, higher damage variation (same dps if you will) and that LMG all of a sudden ups their effectiveness.

BC2 and up-coming BF3 upped the ante... I was shocked when I first loaded BC2, selected medic and tried to revive someone... WTF where are my paddles..."dude you have to unlock them" OMFG... really??? At least with BC2, unlocks were pretty quick, almost making them pointless. BF3 from all the news has pumped this up 10x to almost WOW levels... give me a break. From what I have heard, pilots have to unlock flares???? Wow that really encourages a ground pounder like myself to at least try fly... not....

While all this crap sickens me, mainly because players are no long satisfied with playing a fun game and shooting people in the face... They also have to "level up", get "ribbons" to apparently make a game fun...

I say they should just go all the freaking way... sell an expansion for 15-20 bucks for all unlocks. I would probably buy it cause I don't want to be limited in my selection and choice for a game I play for fun. I don't want to say... "my team needs a medic... but I am only level 1 medic can't revive..."

The best Pepsi promotion ever was when they had Pepsi Points on the caps for free Amazon MP3's.

I gathered at least 100 free songs during that promotion :)

I've never prestiged. I've always thought it was stupid. I get to loose all my shit just so I can have all the honor of going through the BS again?

Gotta agree with the guy... any game where you can somehow buy better stuff that makes you better than your opponents (when those opponents are humans) is pretty god damn retarded.

I think the whole XP thing is a joke. Leveling up,achievements, they're all artificial ways to hold your attention in a game.Another curse of the console age.

I agree, anything that effects game play through products isn't what I call fair game. Even though Team Fortress 2 does this, it does it through hats. What do hats do? They make you giant targets in TF2.

World of Warcarft does the same thing, but through pets. What do pets do, or mounts? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

You want to siphon money from idiots, that's fine, but don't let it effect people who bought the game. If I enter a match with a pistol, and a 14 year old has a super deluxe ass ripper because he likes to drink lots of Mountain Dew, that's very unfair.

!ACHIEVEMENT!
You have acquired diabetes!

Corrected that...

I want 4x XP for drinking good beer!

Surly make a deal with MW3!!!!!

See, now that would make everyone happy. You'd be too drunk to employ that super-gun you just obtained from the XP program. The playing field would still be leveled.

Wonder what kind of unlocks you get if you get diabetes from their promo? "Collect the official MW3 insulin pump!" Not a fan of either product: Pepsi is too sweet and Doritos taste like the bastard son of corn and chemicals.

On a related note, having a blast playing the BF3 beta--other than occasionally falling under the map or being tempted to TK morons with flashlights :D

The last PC game I played for any length of time was BF2. But even with that game I saw the direction gaming was headed and I did not care for it. I spent lots of time running my own game server and adding features but once "ranked" servers came to being the writing was on the wall. What made multi-player gaming fun for me was slowly starting to be taken away and I lost interest at that time.

My gaming is now mostly single player efforts on consoles. And my gaming PC is probably 6 years old now. I wonder how much $$ I saved by not being on the PC update cycle since then.

I refocused the extra time on learning to play an instrument instead so I'm pretty happy that something broke my on-line multi-player addiction I used to have.

It'll be interesting to see how low gaming can get. We can just sit back and watch it destroy its self.

What people are overlooking is that the 14 year olds with no life will grind out all the unlocks within a few days anyways, the people this will help are the casual players as they are the ones who are to busy working, raising a family, and/or having sex to play 24 hours a day the moment the game is released.

While I enjoyed the BF3 alpha (I have the beta but haven't had a chance to play it yet) what annoyed the hell out of me was that everything needed to be unlocked for every class and for each side of the map as well.

the point is companies making money, they dont care when people unlock their stuff.

Yeah I quickly found prestige to be a big waste of time, especially as the M16 is one of the best guns to have, aside from the AK47 and Commando. Big whoop, you got a special badge and an extra weapons loadout for the same bloody weapon in the other 5 slots.

Not prestiging either, not buying the extra crap either, or the yearly waste of cash.

I can only imagine all the torn up cases at my local Walmart.

My first thought also.

And why is this any different from spending real money on those silly Facebook games or preordering "ultimate editions" from certain vendors for unlocks?
At least with this they ony get double XP for a certain amount of time. Who knows, they may have a crap match where they are spawn-raped for 10 minutes of their 15 minute double XP.
