I tossed mint 14 on a old P4. I was using a ancient 17' monitor at 1024. I have a new benq monitor and yet mint says it's unknown and I am stuck at 1024 even though it's 1920.

I would have thought it would be seen when I fired mint up. Maybe it's the card, a old Nvidia Geforce 4 using legacy drivers.

I'll probably have to do a fresh install or toss ubunto on.

If it won't recognize your display your display driver is not functioning properly.

Do the nvidia proprietary driver update, the open source version sucks becuase nvidia does not support it.

I did the proprietary driver after jumping through so many hoops.

I can't even remember how, sudo this and that and quite a few tricks due to the GPU being so old.

The envision I could see not being recognized due to it's age [8+ years old] but the benq is new.

Linux usually has quite a good legacy support but perhaps it's time to invest to a newer graphics card? 30 bucks will get you a GF200 series.
