Old news for some. Please read the articles below. Basically, any K-series CPU from Intel doesn't have vPro support, until you get to the 8600K and 8700K. Luckily, I still just use 3570K's, 3770K's, 3930K's, and some old i7 980X's.

Intel ME firmware Big Brother backdoor is scary. Does AMD have the same?

All systems that have a remotely accessible layer that is lower level than the OS have NSA backdoors.

This is common knowledge.

This includes all network connected "management engines" as well as most high end network equipment sold by US vendors (Cisco etc.).

NSA also has master keys for the public/private key authentication/verification systems for all major US key verification companies, like Verisign, Microsoft, Google, etc.

Doesn't Intel Management Engine need a Windows driver to work? What about those of us running Linux?

No; IME itself is a micro computer running inside the chip set that manages things like main processor initialization, power management, and remote administration. The Windows drivers just lets the OS talk to the IME Interface.
