Microsoft Will Pester Windows 7 Users to Upgrade to W10 with Pop-Up Notifications

I do its called nag ware. Windows did this when Windows 10 came out. I am aware Windows 10 is out stop bugging me. Should be once and asked for reminder later. Still need to work on better updates and thoroughly tested before they are released. We should be allowed to accept update or not. Just crappy inexcusable support. Time Microsoft released stable o/s patches and updates.

So yesterday I went to upgrade the SSD in my brothers works PC. I keep a small 10GB Linux utility partition on it. When I booted it, I realized it was Ubuntu 12.04, EOL since 2 years ago. I only use it for utilities, so don't care. Guess what? If I ASK what updates are available, it tells me the next LTS is available (14.04) but if I DON'T ASK it doesn't bug me, as expected.

Not sure why Microsoft can't do the same? Also: By default it doesn't auto-upgrade itself either.

I mean without derailing IMHO the difference between *nix users and windows users would allow you to not do that.

If windows update is default set to off a lot of non power users wouldn’t know it and wouldn’t care. That doesn’t sound good with that high of an install base with casual users.

Now if we could just turn off the nag/disable updates until we want to be served them that would be acceptable.

The average end user as we all have experienced can be very dumb.

That's only half the issue, the other half is feature, UI and user privacy/control regressions.
The thing about win10 is there's so many facets of it that people dislike.

In my workplace we're still on 7 and will be for the foreseeable future as we have too much custom code written for it that doesn't work under 10.

IT guys are screwed. =P

And the same thing was said for XP, and then Vista, and then 7, and now 10.

I've seen pretty much the same exact complaints from the same exact type of people for the past 25+ years.

When I started working at my current employer around 9 years ago, most computers were still on XP.. and those that were on 7 were running 32-bit. Took me all of about 2 weeks to get multiple locations to switch to 64-bit after I showed them that it would take nothing more than adding the 64-bit printer drivers on the print server for everything to work... They were under the impression that it would be super difficult to switch.

We even had one engineer using CAD software on a C2D based laptop with only onboard Intel graphics. After a few months I forced him to replace his computer and then he was super happy even though he fought tooth and nail to keep his super crappy laptop.

It is very hard to convince some people that newer stuff is better... both software and hardware wise.

People don't like change and those who don't are very hard or impossible to convince that change can be good.

I've been running beta and other pre-release versions of Windows since Windows 98SE was in beta.

The only version I really had issues with was Vista before SP1 due to some really crappy file system issues such as it being super slow. After SP1 it was just fine.
 
I'm not afraid of Windows 10, just afraid of Microsoft updates related to Windows 10. I remember not so long ago an update deleting files off peoples computers. First time I've heard of a Microsoft update deleting files.

Besides that I'm guessing that in 2020 Microsoft will start your Windows 10 pay for the service.
 
I'm very happy about this new feature, as it might get my IT idiots off their lazy asses.

IT sent me an email two weeks back saying I'd get the upgrade this previous Thursday, but as-of today it's still stuck on Win7.

It's not like it's incompatible. I'm running Skylake on a 256GB SSD. It's positively OVERKILL for 10. So maybe this will kick my idiot IT group in the nuts.

Are you a supervisor? Have you considered playing to their strengths instead of referring to them as idiots? Good leaders would invest in people instead of wield them like human weapons.

So I chatted microsoft and told them I have always paid for and never stolen my OS's dating back to win 3.11 and that I've used MSFS dating back to 4.5. They approved me for a free upgrade....

They sent ME the email saying last Thursday. Installed their upgrade validation tool (that will reinstall existing applications).

The upgrade deadline THEY GAVE ME has come and passed by several days, with no further IT email. Therefore my IT department is lazy fucks who need a kick in the ass.

They sent me the upgrade notice TWO WEEKS AGO FR MY SPECIFIC MACHINE. It could have happened anytime later this year (if they were too busy) and still be within the deadline.

Is it an automatic upgrade that is supposed to happen? Are you using SCCM/Software Center?

If so, even if the compatibility test passed, it may be that it failed when it tried to install. Have you asked IT about it (ASKED - NOT ACTED LIKE THE JERK YOU SOUND LIKE)?

If using Software Center, have you gone into Software Center and looked to see if it says there is an upgrade available?

Will MS will offer Win10 LTSC as a free upgrade for Win7 Pro users? It's the only thing they offer that is almost an upgrade. Win10 UI still sux donkey farts in a flat flatulent wind.

I downloaded it and installed over a year ago so I'd have a free copy when the time came then reverted back to Win 7. But just upgraded the other day to build 1809, and it does indeed come with Linux. And not only does it come with Linux but it comes with full version of Win 95 in case you're feeling nastalgic. Pinball anyone?
