Microsoft MCE Remote and DirecTV Receiver

I recently got a Microsoft MCE Remote from Newegg and I'm trying to get a few features to work correctly. I should note that I do not have a TV tuner and really do not wish to use Media Center (I have Vista). Basically the functions I want this remote are to be able to change channel, volume, and shut off my DirecTV receiver. So far I can get the change volume, and shut off receiver but no changing channel. I would have thought you could "teach" the remote this functionality as I did with the shutting off receiver, but no such luck. Any information on this would be great.
