Microsoft Bans Use of "Offensive Language" On Xbox Live and Others

So basically Microsoft is planning on shutting down xbox live 1 user at a time?... because that what I am getting out of this story.

Look I really and I mean really hate the way people are assholes in online games so much so that I have stopped playing most of them but if everyone who used offensive language were banned then we might as well just ban everyone preemptively (I.E not have games online)

I think the better solution is to

1. have all online games institute an automute function for both text and voice chat that can be turned on and left on (I.E click this box to never hear anything anyone else says ever, you only have to click it once, you don't have to remember to click it at the start of the game; you turn this on and boom all the assholes go away) for people like me that just don't want to deal with the juvenile dick waving contest that is the internet.

2. Tell people when they start playing your game that this option exists.

3. Tell everyone hey if you chose not to use automute than you basically are choosing to wade in to the cesspool of filth that is the internet so if your feelings get hurt too bad.

The Problem is that currently most online games do not have an automute function and instead typically require you to mute people individually thus forcing people who just want to play games to endure a constant stream of filth because trying to mute douche bags one at a time on the internet is like trying to eradicate the earths housefly population with a rolled up newspaper (I.E not practical).

I don't play online games or use skype or any of that so it won't effect me but it should show people they are too dependent on google/ms/apple behemoths and we need to diversify our bonds in the software and internet game.

My next computer will not have microsoft anything on it.

I like cursing and free speech and I don't like complicity in nationwide surveillance. If people stopped using the big three they would die.

It's just another way guys in suits are trying to force control. (ms censorship).

Not saying I agree with using foul language directed at minors or bringing someone down over their race nation or creed or religion.

But if someone has the bad taste to behave in such a way in front of me, I am man enough to tell them to stop or back out of the game myself if it bothers me that bad. Do we really need all these corporate and government mommies and daddies babysitting us? (No).

Hopefully this will be the case for Xbox Live and such too. At least proper british insults show you have good and clever language skills unlike the "F*** YOUR MUM!" screeching that is all the rage with 12 year olds.

When they do that just say "only if I can F*** yours first." ;)

Lol, this'll work well. People will start reporting people just for spite.

Am i incorrect that in these games you're not able to... you know... mute or "ignore" people that you don't want to hear?

I find it a bit amazing that we're at the point of practically criminalizing offending someone. Do people not realize what that means?

Hate Speech is not Free Speech !!!!

JK, this is bullshit, and everyone with more than 2 brain cells they can rub together knows it. Smack talk has been a part of all competitive outlets since the dawn of time.

From Microsoft's Code of Conduct

  • iv. Don’t publicly display or use the Services to share inappropriate content or material (involving, for example, nudity, bestiality, pornography, offensive language, graphic violence, or criminal activity).
  • vii. Don’t engage in activity that is harmful to you, the Services, or others (e.g., transmitting viruses, stalking, posting terrorist content, communicating hate speech, or advocating violence against others).

I know Microsoft can do or run their platform as they please and that's great, but I do find it alarming that the phrases are making in the terms of service agreements which normalizes their use in the broader culture and generates support for the infringement of ones civil rights.

Anyways I know there is a problem here, but banning anyone for using offensive language is not the solution. I kinda like Kinjo's 3 step plan as a general use case.

First off the policy was already in place, it's quite literally been reworded, Snow Flake Sycophant Wire has been lacking things to be outraged and/or injured by so we'll have to have a big, self-righteous circle jerk about liberty

Second, the problem is not "12 year old kids" it's kids all the way up to their 40s. I have to wonder, though, if you go into a restaurant and start screaming insults at the other patrons would it be OK if the owners asked you to leave..?

I could go on a long rant about nobody having the right to celebrate their own degeneracy by making X-Box Live or whatever a shit hole, but why? This rule is every bit as unenforceable as it was last week, last year, and ten years ago it's been in effect the whole time. Nobody has the surveillance capacity to even attempt it, somebody has to report the problem for anything to happen. Grown ups already avoid "hard core gamers" like the plague, nothing changes. Microsoft is dreaming, it's too late to save X-Box Live from gamers.

They have effectively put themselves in position to ban 80% of their xbox live customer base? LOL
I foresee lots of empty game servers because it will be dropping people like mad, even if its not directed at someone we all know in the heat of a good fight and someone dies the "F" bomb is dropped.....

It is a move in the right direction, people seem to have forgot what good manners are about these days. People walk past you in the street using foul language regardless of who they are passing. It will be difficult to change the whole culture now though.

Man, that lead picture.

Good, I remember how many friends I made in the first years of XBL and actually being able to have nice conversations. But honestly, I haven't used open chat on XBL in a few years, and always party up if a friend is wanting to play.

As long as I don't play first person shooters, I should be okay :D

But seriously, I wonder if this will include curses from science fiction. Will I get banned for saying frack?

I see why they are doing this... gaming online is like descending into hell... people are real douche bags and are rarely considerate of others...I quit gaming online years ago because I got tired of people trash talking...

but I do not want to go down that slippery slope..

This is a funny thread. The self-righteous indignation centering on the monitoring itself makes me giggle a bit. I have to ask those who are up in arms about this move,.....Do you have a smart phone? Do you have any type of social media account? Do you use any search engines? Do you make use of any cloud services? Do you own any IoT devices?

If you answered "Yes" to any of the above questions,....well,...you are being monitored.

Now they all have the monitoring thing down and everyone is used to it, the next logical phase is to transition to taking action. Yes, for a short time people will yell and scream, then they will all silently fall in line and accept the new paradigm.

They know we cannot live without our toys, and with each step taken very slowly, they will eventually control us all. It is happening, whether you acknowledge it or not. Yes, my tin foil hat is a very shiny object.

Glad this is happening now instead of 10 years ago. I had a pair of friends staying at my house for 3 days who managed to tank my Xbox "reputation" down to 10% approval. It took me like 6-7 years to finally recover after that :p These days I'd be screwed.

"offensive language", And what might that be!?

Too many fucking pussies in this world, just waiting til we use the three sea shells to remove our crap from our bums.
It's kink of silly they allow some offensive language while banning other.

I just with people would grow a back bone over a few words and their silly fad fairy-tale belief systems.

Those services won't be profitable if enough individual users and companies abandon them due to the potential breaches of privacy.;)
If you're toxic, then paying customers leave. I think this is what happened to VideoGameDunkey with League of Legends cause he talked smack a lot. As long as it doesn't get racist or sexist, I'm fine with it.

Not all search engines monitor you. Also, a device like a Raspberry PI-Hole will allow you to stop all kinds of monitoring/tracking.

I would think that if you are accessing the internet in any form then you could be monitored/tracked regardless of your safe practices while online.

Ah, the old news is floating around stuff, just because someone says so. I prefer proof but hey, since when is accusing MS of things require actual, verifiable proof. I know, I must be a white knight because I do not let others do the thinking for me. Good luck.
Cue "snowflake" bombs in 3...2...1...

BWAHAHAHA. Shortly before I stopped playing WOW, I would go to the low level towns and kill all the NPCs. Watching all the people standing around not being able to use transportation or any of the vendors because they were all dead was hilarious.

Then, right before the super high level guards would reach me, I would fly out of there on my mount. That was the most fun I had had in that game for quite a while.

The trash talking is just par for the course in those games. Especially for the younger players. They get tired of it if you ignore them... or in PvP you just kill them repeatedly and then laugh at them. Eventually they get the idea to leave you alone.

It'll take at least a generation of parents teaching good manners and courtesy for it to change.

In other words: never.
