On Friday, we ran an article describing Windows 8 and the steps Microsoft is taking to protect your digital identity. Microsoft is also planning to introduce visual level password protection in Windows 8. By using gesturing on screen pictures, tapping designated areas will translate into a secure password. Windows 8 will indeed be new and innovative on many levels.

I'm gonna use the same tap points as when I watch porn :D:D

why do people want to touch their screens?!

I don't want any OS that requires me to put fingerprints and smudges on my LCDs.
This is a bad idea.

Yes, because Windows 8 is going to hold a gun to your head and make you buy a touch screen to use with it.

You do realize the Metro interface is being designed for touchscreens correct? And that many of the features on Windows 8 are being optimized for touchscreen interfaces? It only makes sense to explore areas such as this as well if you are going to be touching the screen 2 seconds after you log in anyways.

Let's see here, circle gestures... One could do a "Dial in Tokyo" set of gestures akin to the "Tune in Tokyo" concept with your favorite picture. I can see a bunch of ladies getting mad because their man is giving the login screen more action. LOL

Great idea ... because figuring out tap points would be so difficult, in theory.... but in reality, you just tap the nipples

Hell, why not just skip the touchscreen and just use a Kinect. Then everyone can use the Haddo Gei pelvic thrust to log on. :D

try again.

Microsoft will be over 8 years behind.

Levering Pictures for password protection systems was already being used in Linux systems as far back as 2003... as in when Windows Xp was calling itself "new"

There have also been multiple research projects into using Picture based password systems such as this research paper from 2009: http://www.tricerion.com/downloads/Usability-of-picture-passwords.pdf Just note some of the dates referenced in that paper.

So... once again... we have Microsoft claiming that it's doing something nobody else has done... when it's not being innovative... and it's already old.

Might want to update your news article to indicate reality.

I don't plan to reach over to my monitor any time soon. Windows 7 it is if for whatever reason they suggest it. :p

From the standpoint of a regular desktop/laptop PC user I can see where they are coming from. Touchscreen support does nothing to help regular PC users, and actually makes the whole UI less efficient.

It may work great on tablets but how many people have tablets? How many people have non-touchscreen PCs?

I would think think this would be a much easier to crack for the average person than a word or numerical password. I already know the picture I will be using.

i dont understand the hate here. you guys do realize that only TOUCHSCREENS can use picture passwords where you have to TOUCH THE SCREEN. therefor, you will not be getting fingerprints all over your current monitor. you will be getting fingerprints all over your tablet or touchscreen all-in-one, which you will already be touching anyway. and because not all windows PCs have touchscreens, this will not be a required feature. you will be able to use a normal password or disable password entirely im sure.

Oh cool, must have missed that feature in opensuse back in '05, and then Ubuntu 9 and now 11.

So basically those of us who doesn't have a touch screen will be left out of this feature :(

That's like complaining that your honda civic doesn't have the hauling abilitiy of a pickup truck. Want touchscreen capability? Buy a touchscreen....?

You can definitely use this feature with the mouse. It's been in the beta since it came out. I have a picture password on my laptop when I run windows 8. One thing to note though, is that if someone watches you click/touch it in, then it's pretty easy for them to remember it.

Are you sure these two papers discuss the same technique used in Windows 8? Have you even read these two papers?

Pay more attention to the preview that they did at D last year, which is when they actually first previewed it but it went past most people's head. At one point, he got in by using the mouse to rub Balmer's head in the picture.

More and more evidence that supports my intention of completely skipping this iteration of windows.

Silly stuff and touch screen requirement?! Forget it MS.

I dont know how "innovative" this is since my Android phone already has a dial pad picture password.

Great. They're thinking of 8 as a touchscreen, but what about desktop users? Where's 8's "innovation" there?

why do people want to touch their screens?!

I'm guessing more of the world is illiterate than literate, so yeah, point & touch is the solution to that dilemma, tho I'm not sure how MS thinks they can monetize those so marginalized.

glad i wasnt hte only one that thought nipples. which means so will everyone else trying to use my pc lol

that or use demi moore's 80's muff photos, nobody will be able to crack that password gesture.

My guess is MS is going to roll out a touch trackpad like Apple's Magic Touchpad to enable touch on standard desktops for windows 8
