Microsoft Corp., Mojang AB, and Code.org on Monday unveiled a “Minecraft” coding tutorial for students and educators, created especially for the third-annual Hour of Code, a campaign to broaden global participation in computer science, held during Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 7–13. The new tutorial, now available at code.org/mc, introduces players to basic coding within the fun and popular “Minecraft” environment. Created by “Minecraft” game designers together with Code.org, the tutorial features Steve and Alex from “Minecraft” and “Minecraft”-inspired challenges that will be familiar to its more than 100 million players around the world.

Kinda unhelpful, it would be better for those kids to learn real programming skills.

If you are trying to encourage children to learn coding, the last thing you want to do is make them sit through sessions of theory and logic. Let them be exposed through examples with something that interests them otherwise they will never give it a shot.

I always felt that knowing ANY language when attempting a second generally made the new language easier. Having a grasp on terminology, even if you go a different route to obtain the result, made it heaps easier.

The Computercraft mod is a much better way for kids to learn programming in Minecraft. They even have an easier version just for kids.

Computercraft uses Lua. Which is easier to learn than Java. It's a good environment to learn the basics, and there's some pretty damn impressive turtle programs out there available that people have programmed.
