MGE Magnum 500W interior pics

I like this quote :)
I didn't want to tear the power supply down any further for fear of not being able to get it back together, after all, I still need to do some testing for this review.

I'm going to take a stab at it and say it's NOT made by Yongyear like all of MGE's other power supplies. ;)

What's funny is I had an idea for a PSU with skivved heatsinks and heatpipes over a year ago and everyone thought I was nuts. Go figure. These guys do it and the price is just over $100.

One thing gets me, though. "Improved cooling extends lifespan." I didn't have a longevity problem with any of the power supplies I'm currently using. This power supply doesn't really provide THAT MUCH power (30A on combined 12V rails, but only if the 3.3V and 5V don't exceed 25W, because the combined max is only 385W, which is unrealistic because your drives alone are going to need more power than that.) So why does it need such "exteme cooling" to "extend lifespan?"

It LOOKS well made, but where did they go wrong?

For some reason I'm getting a Sirtec vibe from that unit... other than that, I don't recognize too much about it.

Edit - not Sirtec... I think we're looking at a Seventeam unit here. The specs correspond exactly to their fanless unit, and I'm seeing a few part numbers in the innards that start with ST; mainly on the small PCB and main transformer.

A couple 400w Seventeams with "ST" markings on PCB's and/or the main transformer:

Oh yeah... You see that Seventeam label? JUST LIKE the MGE label.

Other than both are white and sticking to the sides of their respective units, I see few label similarities.

At this point, I'm only about 60% sure these are Seventeam. No, common markings on PCB's aren't definitive proof, but I consider them at least a step in the right direction. From what I am seeing, the best way to tell a Seventeam is to pull the main PCB and look for markings underneath. I'm not about to buy one of these and find out though - I just don't have the money.

I don't agree at all.

The layout of these two labels is VERY unlike 99% of the PSU labels out there:

Empahsis on the table. Nobody puts the +3.3V, 5V and 12V on a seperate column labeled "voltage" and then the -12V and +5VSB on another column labeled "current" and then have a third column labeled "frequency" which does have nice information you don't find on other power supplies, but also has the total power as well as PS-ON: Remote, POK: P.G. and COM: Return listed in the exact same order and manner?

It's the same factory. ;)

Ah ok... thought you were being sarcastic there ;)

Wheres the "blank stare into oblivion" smilie? Hmm...

Yeah.. that's a problem I need to deal with. I'm often so sarcastic, people don't know when I'm NOT sarcastic.
