Metro 2033 review

Great. That means maybe my GTX 280 SSC has a chance here. :)

Running a GTX 280 and Q6600 with no overclocks on either in mine. DX9 and "high" looks pretty comparable to DX11 and "very high" when the game's in motion, it's only really in stills that I see a difference.

I'm really digging this game thus far, I just finished getting past the front lines between the commies and the nazis.
My only issue with it is, even though I get decent frame rates I can't go past 1920x1200 because if I do I think my cards are running out of VRAM.

I lied! Turning off advanced depth of field did the trick.
I actually don't think it's too bad, I get 21FPS with Very High and DX11 stuff enabled @ 2560x1600 on 1 GPU and it's not too bad that low.

I think Stalker games has had comparable interiors with user mods but this game certainly looks good. Interiors are much easier to do right than exteriors.

So does setting an 80-90 FOV look right for this game in 16:10?

I've played doom 3 and the expansion, got through all the stalker games. This game is scary as fuck.

I finally made it out into the city, or what was left of it. It is cold and dark, I don't feel safe. After going out alone, I went through creepy broken down old buildings. I hear sounds of them all around me. I kept breathing hard, the game kept up with my breathing. I was trying to hide in the shadows, but I left my light on by mistake. They came out of nowhere and surrounded me. I tried fighting them off, killing them from in front and behind me. They eventually overtook me and I died.

Okay, that there is enough to scare me away from the game. I had assumed from the pictures posted that much of the game involved you being in groups of people and other survivors and mercanaries trying to survive. If I'm alone in the dark, I'm pressing ALT-F4 the moment I get spooked!

bahahahhaha

Jeez, I just picked up BC2 for $50, but this game looks sooooooo nice.... I still haven't finished STALKER yet sigh.

I still haven't finished Stalker and I have Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat waiting to download in steam. I don't know if I will ever get to them.

I used FoV of 60 because otherwise it looked retarded. To the point where my eyes were apparently about 2 feet behind my head.

This is really an incredible experience.. this game creates the most oppressive atmosphere I've experienced in a game...

Ok so had a go, in DX10 NORMAL quality setting, the game runs 30fps average, a bit higher here and there but smooth, like how Crysis is smooth at 30, I did have to drop the mouse sensitivity one notch as it felt like it was lagging/over accelerating before.

I changed the user.cfg FOV to 90 as by default it's 45 (wtf?) and every time I start the game I HAVE to disconnect my 2nd monitor otherwise the game loads all black - you can plug the 2nd screen back in once the game is loaded however.

The game looks amazing in DX9 and DX10. At the VERY HIGH quality setting I get around 15fps average, to be experted I guess from a GTX260 with only 216 stream processors while VPU memory usage wasn't anywhere close to the limit in DX10. The CPU load on my Q9550 was probably around 30% for each core while GPU core load was 75%~ so it's quite clear it's a GPU bound game even with lower details.

I think the quality difference between VERY HIGH and NORMAL isn't that huge, both look amazing and detailed and clothing/props etc are bump mapped to the teeth - skin tones also look very shiny, like a "just stepped out of the swimming pool" look, would be fine if it was a big boobed blonde or something I guess (!).

There's only 4xMSAA and AAA in the fsaa options, neither seem to use fsaa although fps drops <15 in busy areas!

This game gives me hope for PC gaming, that we aren't just going to be stuck with outdated technology, that people other than Crytek are still trying to make beautiful games.

It also gives me concern for PC gaming because everything was released in a broken state. Luckily, the cfg file is so easily accessed according to most people.

I'd say play this first, it would be a good warm-up to Stalker. They're comparable but the linear nature of this would probably be a good jumping-off point before you get stuck into Stalker. Metro's a little less challenging most of the time.

I thought the FOV is vertical rather than horizontal, like BC2. Wouldn't an FOV of 90 look like some crazy fisheye view?

Your people do look weirdly plasticky. http://i.imgur.com/qk7XY.jpg I don't know what setting it would be to change that though.

I found this interesting note regarding the game:

"Oles Shishkovstov: First and foremost: 3D Stereo. The game was developed in 3D and for 3D. That's the only game developed that way as far as I know. Playing the game under DX11 in 3D Stereo is just mind-blowing, it's much, much more amazing than watching Avatar in IMAX."

Has anybody tried this on their Nvidia 3D setup yet?

If you need to set a vfov rather than hfov, like in BC2, then you're going to want about 75 degrees.

I don't even know how. I have settings in my control panel for it and can enable it in-game but I don't have the first idea what it is or how to go about using it. I always just ignored it every time I heard about it.

For FOV, I don't know if it's game specific or the idea was something like this:

4:3 would be 70
16:9 would be 100-101
16:10 would be about 95

I feel like I see these kinds of values thrown around a lot so I guess if anyone wants to experiment that has the game, there ya have it.

That isn't right, I normally play 90 FOV in most games but the equivalent to this game is 60-75. Probably vertical FOV. Also, there's no true 16:10 as there are black bars on the top and bottom. It's really 16:9.

These are good values for setting the horizontal FOV, but some games control the FOV through settings a vertical FOV instead in which case you want about 75 degrees for all aspect ratio's and the game will work out an equivalent horizontal FOV for you. Anything about 75 will give you a strong fisheye effect.

Thanks for that info!

couldnt even get the game to work. physX drivers? nvidia needs to go die right away

That part was done really well. I like the frantic breaths he takes from the gas mask are very realistic. Having worn a gas mask myself for an extended period of time, it sounds exactly the same and I almost felt short of breath just listening to it. This game immerses you very well.

Dumb question: Would those drivers even be viable or come into play for ATI users?

Do you HAVE to have those drivers?

There's a formula you can use to determine the correct VFOV given a desired HFOV at a given aspect ratio, but I can't for the life of me seem to find it.

I really would love to play this game, Well I have it but doing body work on my car is really taking my time up. I played up the the bridge part (I won't say more due to spoilers) and I had to stop since it was 12am already.

Also the game runs ok here just kinda sad that going from Normal on DX10 to High makes my fps go from 45-75 to 22-26. Also did anyone with the new drivers have problems with AA? Before on 196 drivers I could have MSAA X2 and be fine with performance, but afterwards with the new drivers it cuts my fps to 7-14? Very weird. Playing on 1920x1200 btw.

I hope to get some play time today after I finish working on the other hobby.

I agree you 100% when the game went outside for the first time, It game me chills and goosebumps down my arms, I was like HOLY $#$# I want to back underground lol
and the outside parts later are just as scary, almost

also i get 30 fps @ high settings @ 1920x1080

This game has a VERY pathetic sound for weapons. When you play BC2 you feel like you're shooting weapons. In Metro it's like a cap gun... it's so unsatisfying and makes me so sad :(

The game will NOT run for me in fullscreen either, which is so damn annoying. I had to open the config file manually and change the fullscreen setting to off. I still get this error every time I start the game. Not sure what to do as I have reinstalled video drivers and all that jazz twice. I do not know how to uninstall and reinstall directX though, because that might solve my problem.

What I DO like is the length of the game. If that map during the load screen really depicts the game world and all the stuff you'll have to do it seems like it'll be very satisfying. MW2 and BC2 were way too damn short :( Then again those have multiplayer, whatever.

Here's some crappy screenshots from a 9800GT with shit on low settings and DX9.

All I have to say is this.......Metro 2033 is pornography for the eyes. Things looks so frickin good with all the details jacked up. This is the DX11 game that we have been looking for, and this game is a lighting powerhouse.

I want to keep playing, but at 2am I seriously need to get to sleep. This game looks incredible, and the performance is not anything like what i've been reading. Things are very smooth, and I have yet to drop below 30fps. It may have dropped below that for just an instance, but I cannot tell for sure as I have no idea how to enable that fps counter that I am seeing in some screenshots.

I am running in DX11 with all details set on very high(as high as it will go). I have DoF selected on(not sure I like this effect though), and I have Tessellation selected on. Advanced physics is also on. From what I can tell, I have yet to significantly drop below 30fps, and I have been through some intense firefights so far. The lighting effects alone are literally like porn for the eyes. I may be getting such good frame rates though because I am unable to run higher than 1360x768 due to my LCD TV. I am running AAA versus MSAA as well. I tried switching to MSAA and it was playable, but too much fluctation in the frame rates with some areas where it did slow down.

If anyone is interested, here are my system specs
Catalyst 10.3a preview of the performance drivers
2x XFX 5850 BE's running in Crossfire at 775(overclocked from 765)/1125(stock)
AMD Phenom II X4 965 oc'd to 3.5ghz
8gigs of Corsair DDR3 running at 1600mhz @ 9-9-9-24

Does anyone know how I can get the FPS counter to display that i've seen in screenshots posted on the net? Can't figure it out and a search and yielded no answers.

My only complaint is that this game needs a vsync option. I hope they add it in future revisions in a patch.

All I have to say is that those 10.3 drivers must be miracle drivers, or this game is heavily impacted by what screen resolution you are running. Everyone with the same setup as me(2x 5850's) appear to be complaining about frame rates with them running in true 1080p.

Get the 10.3a performance drivers, keep the resolution at 1360x768, use AAA instead of MSAA, and the bottom line is that anyone with the same setup as me should be able to max out every single option and get VERY good frame rates without having to get a Fermi.

I'm running DX9, has anybody found a way to force FSAA/SSAO with ATI cards? I tried renaming to UT3.exe and no dice.

DoF is a frame rate killer. I grew tired of the effect so I turned it off, frame rates shot up by 20. With that off, I can run it at 2560x1600 pretty well now.

This is the most beautiful PC game that I have ever played up to this point. And I am still in DX9!

And I was okay whenever I had a teammate but when I got abandoned on the surface, I freaked out and hit ALT-F4!!!

Friend came over earlier today and he let me log into his Steam account and download the game. Wow. Performance is better than I expected. 5040x1050, DX10, Very High, AAA. Very smooth for the time I played (which was just through a bit of Hunter, so not a lot). For some reason switching the res to the native res of my monitors (1680x1050) makes the game look like shit. Everything is squished and ugly looking.

The game is broken, needs resolution and aspect ratio patch/fix. I'm guessing Steam hasn't certified and deployed the patch yet.
