MerakMail vs Exchange: Good idea?

We are looking to get away from Exchange for a myriad of reasons, top of the list is that Exchange eats shit.

I'm tasked with doing research on this and finding a solution. Anyone have experience with Merak? I see it has a built in spam filter. Wondering if this is worth ditching my symantec spam filter over, or if I can run em in tandem?
