MechWarrior is slowly becoming a reality: a group of American roboticists have challenged a Japanese collective to a giant robot fight, and here is a look at our guy, “Eagle Prime.” Apparently, the event will not be livestreamed because safety is not guaranteed, even for the pilots.

MegaBots’ 12-ton, 16-foot robot, which it’s very patriotically calling “Eagle Prime,” has shipped to the as-of-yet undisclosed duel location. The new robot can move quicker and punch faster than the original robot MegaBots built. It has seats for a pilot and a gunner, and features a cannon arm for shooting massive paintballs, and a giant claw for grappling opponents. MegaBots said it’s also built other weapons that can be swapped onto the robot, including a chainsaw and a very large drill.

I'm impressed that they're starting to build mechs and it's glorious!

I'm not so impressed with the video. Reminds me of all the National Geographic edits and sound effects they used in their Mustang documentary.

Seems like it will be very fragile, given all the exposed hydraulics and wiring.

There's no reason for them to by physically piloting the things instead of doing it by remote.

Seems like this is old news...........

Says someone who has never been in control of a combat vehicle. Real live humans are actually rather impressive processors capable of things that remote piloting and automation are not today and likely never will be. That said, someone could die........and that is part of the thing that draws people to such things.

You'd rather see a robot knock down some empty barrels? Spidey329 has a point, there's too much exposed wiring, this could end in a split second.

We already have a show called Battlebots. Let's mix in some potential danger for once.

At least, if you go to that circus show, it's not 99% certain that McGregor and Mayweather will turn on the audience and murder them all!

Outstandingly awesome but they could add some protection around those hoses. One good melee slash could disable the robot entirely.

Those paint balls are impressive. I know how hard it is to severely cave in a 55 gallon drum.

The bot is not perfect but that was fun to watch! I would have liked to seen the 2 bots exchange a couple of shots, it was fun none the less!

When will it truly be like Armored Core or Mechwarrior?

    Then I'll be greatly interested.

You are assuming that what was shown was the final configuration. It wouldn't be too difficult to add some armor around the hydraulics and wiring before heading into battle. Then again, with the speed these things are capable of, it's not likely that a single attacker will be able to flank them (all of the exposed stuff is in the rear of the unit).

Until the wireless controls are jammed making your Bot useless. Everyone needs to brush up as to why the BattleStar Galactica was so awesome :)

Looking at these things you'd probably die of boredom during their fight (I'd be very surprised if they can move reasonably fast). While they do look kind of cool, it seems like a real waste of money. BattleBots is much more exciting than this. Unless someone actually pilots these, I doubt it will be much fun despite their big size and all that jazz.
