Matt Does Not Want an iPhone X - Same Reason I Don't Want the Pixel 2

Matt Burns is a savvy guy. He tells us today why the iPhone X is not for him. Many HardForum goers, including myself, have the same sentiments about the Pixel 2. I remember when Matt I were little kids discussing the complexities of wireless audio equipment back in Kansas. Yeah, wires suck, but not near as bad as lost high-dollar earbuds or ones that are not charged. And Bluetooth at volume? Well that just sucks balls too.

Without these two features, I’ll stick with the boring and passé iPhone 8. The iPhone X follows a troubling trend. Apple is seemingly in a habit of reducing core features rather than advancing them. Maybe I’m an old man yelling at clouds for moving too fast.

Now get the hell off my lawn. And no, I never met Matt before, and my longest stint in Kansas was to stop and get gas.

I've had people (mostly young people who can't fathom shit because they've never been challenged their entire lives) freak out when I tell them I don't carry a cell. They look at me like Dogs when you whistle at high frequencies.

Apple. changing the way you do shit. Conform, or get left behind.

resistance is futile. All your jacks are belong to us.

seriously though, the headphone jack whining is getting old.
Iphone now has wireless charging, so you can now charge, and headphone dongle simultaneously !!!!!

Come on, does this really bother you ?.......

Face unlock with no fingerprint unlock? No thanks. Not that I was buying one to begin with, but that is rather ludicrous.

You know I dont give two shits about the whole headphone jack debacle. I never used the jack on any device...ever.

The lack of touchID is a bit more concerning but as long as faceID is equally as reliable I dont care. There is nothing on my phone that I am overly concerned about.

One might think they're trying to remove features, just to add them back in later after they "invent" it again.

Sooner or later I will have to upgrade my 5S, but it still works great, I can't really justify spending the money. I wouldn;t have upgraded my iPad (the first one I bought - a 4th gen one) except I finally managed to drop it outside on the patio and totally smashed the screen. Still worked, but little bits of glass flaking off everywhere was a bit of a nuisance. Given how long I've gotten out of my 5S, I might just go for a 7 and save a few bucks. Or go with the 8 and expect to keep it a long time as well. The X though, does not appeal to me in the least. It seems rather half-baked. Maybe next year, they'll pull it together and make an Xs or something. There's just too much to give up to get a couple of cool features and have the full screen phone that (according to another hardware site) "analysts have been clamoring for". Analysts for what? Certainly not usability - having a space at the bottom next to the home button makes for a handy place to hold the device without blocking the screen. I can see it now - prior to the iPhone X "Apple doesn't get it, no full screen phone" and now that they've produced one "Apple copies Samsung, LG, et. al."

I'm sitting here with headphones attached via the jack to my phone (that is also plugged into the wall) as I write this. I just upgraded to the last HTC phone with a jack and will hold it until it is unusable. I have a nice set of Bose headphones with bluetooth, and I stick the cord on every chance I get as the bluetooth audio just plain sucks. I'm no audiophile, so when I can hear the degradation in the sound, I know it's a problem.

And I dont begrudge you your headphone jack. I am just saying its not in my use case and therefore I have no concerns about it going away. Headphones are something I have zero inclination to use outside of being in a cockpit and then those are plugged into the planes intercom system.

I am just blown away that Apple's catch up game is seen by some fan boys as the opposite.
Glad to see Apple finally has an amoled screen, face detection, and wireless charging.
But this is old hat tech.

Eat your shit you consumer whores. You make a great slave, err, worker base.

Apple tries to catch up to the Galaxy S8 (Welcome to 2017, Apple, you barely made it in time.)
Except the Galaxy S8 still has a headphone jack, uses a non-proprietary charging/data connector, and costs less.

I use my Sennheisser headset for gaming and for telephonic conferences. The voice quality is way better than Bluetooth, which degrades a lot when you are in telephone (talk and listen) versus music mode. That extra quality is large enough to impact how well my clients understand me, so I've given up using Bluetooth. Any cellphone without a headset jack is a non-starter for me. And life is too short for dongles.

Galaxy S8 forever, if that's what it takes to keep using my Sennheissers.

And how are you going to call your lawyer on your $1000 iPhone X when you're out protesting inequality in your balaclava?
You can't just swipe and enter your PIN: the Man is watching, they'll lift your PIN from the surveillance tapes!

TouchID doesn't have these problems. The pigs have to catch you and physically force your finger onto the sensor, and you can always beat your finger to a pulp with a hammer to prevent that.

Wasn't some other android maker looking into getting rid of the 3.5 jack?

So everyone's opinion about Apple is "They don't do stuff first". Wireless Chargin, OLED. But then when they get rid of the 3.5 mm first, they get thrown under the bus. I'll admit that the "Courage" moniker should've stayed behind but this is also Apple... where everything is magical.

But I will say that their products have polish and attention to detail that the android phones i've used in the past didn't have. I've own 2 of them.

Needless. I won't be going to a new phone. Why go to a new phone when my current one works. I need my money to spend on more computer hardware.

First they came for the headphone jack, and I didn't care, because I'd never used one.

Then they came for the in-phone speakers, and didn't care, because ... oh wait, now I have to buy, use, and lose wireless headsets. Damn it.

"Why did we remove the speakers from the phone? Courage."

Wait, did you just equate removing a (useful) feature with bringing new (useful) technologies to the market?

Do you perhaps think Apple should have applied for a patent, "cellphone without headphone jack" ?

I never really use my 3.5 mm jack. I've used it one time out of all the time I've owned my phone. So I consider it useless - for me. Useful or not, it's a change in design and features. My brother in law uses his 3.5 jack for everything. Which is fine.

For me, Removing a headphone jack allows phones to use the space for something else.

My wife was an iPhone holdout until a few months ago when she picked up an S8. She is happy with the move. Kudos to people who enjoy their iPhones. I can only say our experiences have not been positive. Example; my wife had a case on her iPhone5. It dropped like 2 feet off a chair to the floor and landed on its back - BAM - cracked screen. All the endless shit with iTunes, which is just an absolute rock bottom app in addition to the prices of iPhones just going up and up. I have to wonder how long Apple can coast on the coattails of Jobs.

Ah well there ya go. They didn't even do it first. But Apple dropping it made a huge backlash when they dropped it.
