The Facebook CEO published a rather long-winded post last week about where he thought his company should be headed. A number of writers have already criticized it: some say he wants to save the world, while others say he merely wants to own it. The Atlantic here tackles a more specific possibility, that Zuckerberg is building a news organization without journalists. (“The Facebook of the future, he writes, will be ‘for keeping us safe, for informing us, for civic engagement, and for inclusion of all.’”) What are your thoughts on Facebook becoming the de-facto source of news, considering they can’t even get trending stories right?

Zuckerberg is making it clear that he wants Facebook to take over many of the actual functions—not just ad dollars—that traditional news organizations once had. Zuckerberg uses abstract language in his memo—he wants Facebook to develop “the social infrastructure for community,” he writes—but what he’s really describing is building a media company with classic journalistic goals: The Facebook of the future, he writes, will be “for keeping us safe, for informing us, for civic engagement, and for inclusion of all.”

Does inclusion of all include racists, sexists, trolls, haters and bigots in general?

I don't know if it would be considered a news source. Maybe a news aggregate like Drudge. Drudge doesn't create content, he just provides a conduit for content.

It's sad looking in from the outside and seeing whats happening to that industry. All these people clamoring to come up with the best explanation about to how to tell us all what to think. They don't realize that we are at a point in human history where we do not need to be told how to think anymore. We (the commoners) can now freely discuss things amongst each other. Thoughts have no limits anymore. None of them see it.

There is no universal definition for "hater" or whatever, it more or less just means someone disagrees with someone else politically. No universally accepted definition just like "hate speech"

You fail to realize that there is a significant portion of the population that prefer to be told what to think rather than going through the effort of finding out what to think. Especially when the topic at hand doesn't directly affect their daily life.

Would never even consider it a news source. In fact, don't even give it any consideration for anything.

The problem is for the Billion people who do consider it their news source and are easily manipulated by the puppet masters who provide the only "news" the receive.

The real problem is that without some fact checking or other oversight it is just going to sink to the level of the average Facebook feed quickly. I see more stupid 'one weird trick / what the _____ doesn't want you to know' stories posted buy otherwise intelligent people who go face-palmingly stupid as soon as they are away from their point of reference that it's amazing. More of the side effect of not teaching logic in school.

It doesn't matter what he does short of buying every other news organization. Its not going to happen even if he did everything "right".

Inclusion of all is code for Democrats only need apply. There are a number of articles out there about how Facebook will be taking steps to handle things like 'hate speech' and 'fake news.' Hate speech by definition is speech, and is protected, albeit, the owners of Facebook have every right to associate with like minded thinkers. Fake news will become the tool for moderators to simply censor whatever they don't like. All of this will lead to a new social media outlet... LibertyBook perhaps, so none of this matters in all honesty. This is the new norm. The left censors and the right moves on. I find myself in disagreement with both sides on a variety of issues, but the rising totalitarian nature of the left is obviously something to be concerned about. They do not believe in free speech. I completely believe in free speech... even if I hate what's being said.

People actually read Facebook news?

The general content of the people who publish their life stories etc. is to the most part fake, made up or exaggerated. Some funny stuff and good folks as well mixed in. Anyways I just don't bother with Facebook anyways, I just see no real value in it.

This is why I only use web sites that embrace the superiority of the Aryan penis, the Jewish-Muslim-transgender-female-black-homosexual-Mexican-Illuminati-flesh-eating-lizard-men from the centre of the hollow-flat earth are all allied against the glory of the Aryan penis.

You'd be surprised though at the awakening happening in the country. mistrust in the FakeStream media is at an all time high, as is citizen journalism, where news is collaborated on and spread unfiltered among peers - you could almost call it "open source journalism", as everyone can see the work done and can verify or rebutt it themselves. Vs MSM and Silicon Valley tech (Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc) that have agendas and push narratives on the people. People are tired of that shit, and Generation Z especially seems to be in full-throated rejection of the current norm, with a cascaded tidalwave moving its way through the older ranks.

The fact obsessed media is ending, post-truth America is on the rise. A glorious new day is dawning, the idiocracy is upon us!

It's not just media telling people what to think, it's other people that are also telling people what to think. As long as people are unwilling to put in the effort to verify things themselves, misinformation will continue, just the routes in which it occurs will change. The older you get, the more your family and life occupies your time and the less time you have for chasing down the facts.

Additionally, knowing is one thing, acting is another. How many people, even if they know the facts, are willing to act on it? On the other hand, how many ignorant people are easily swayed into misled action?

Is it that the media is telling people what to think, or people only want to hear what they THINK they want to hear?

I find some people are not interested in truth as in, literally, exactly happened. The only "truth" to them are the things that are written solely to conform to their beliefs.

Careful how cavalier you view this. There are many who consider things they disagree with hate speech, and would throw people in the Gulag if they could elect a government that would pass laws against such 'speech.'

Today's Left in America thinks it's also okay to burn shit down if they don't like what you have to say... e.g. Berkeley.

That's fake news buddy. The official statement from Berkeley said that it wasn't the left student's protest that it was a separate group the one that was burning shit down and causing chaos. Don't spread fake news. Always read official statements first. Extremist groups do not define neither all of the left nor the right. The KKK does not define the majority of right wingers, just like the masked people in Berkeley do not define the majority of the left. So attributing those fake news to being from the left is like saying that all right wingers are racist neo-nazis because a minority of them are.

So, Zuckerburg comes up with this one idea that takes off and makes him billions, and all of the sudden he knows what's "best" for mankind??????? He's just a punk kid who let wealth and fame go to his head. Problem is, the way he got it allows him to actually influence people!

Because Berkeley would admit their own students were burning their own campus down and attacking police officers. Lol.

Of course they were students.

is this all satire?

Another lefty who is completely ignorant of history.
The KKK consisted of Democrats, just like the Democrats in West Virginia kept reelecting Robert Byrd to the senate.

Robert C. Byrd, a Democrat, was a recruiter for the Klan while in his 20s and 30s, rising to the title of Kleagle and Exalted Cyclops of his local chapter. After leaving the group, Byrd spoke in favor of the Klan during his early political career. Though he claimed to have left the organization in 1943, Byrd wrote a letter in 1946 to the group's Imperial Wizard stating "The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia."

You literally just proved his point.

There were several episodes in the last season (hey, it only had 3 sadly) of "The Newsroom" where some mega-rich egocentric blowhard came in and wanted to turn the well-respected news establishment of that show's host network into something like what Zuckerberg is considering and it blew up in the guy's face just as this will with Zuckerberg. "Citizen journalists" are two words that should never ever be used together in any kind of sentence except one that calls the term out as being fucking stupid like I'm doing with this sentence itself. :D

The unfortunate thing about the wise ones is there are just so few of us around that the masses of stupid are drowning us out 24/7. :(

Just reacting to the headline, due to its clickbaity nature ^_^

I suspect that it is closer to the truth that he sees snail journalism being destroyed, sees that the internet is taking over the role of informing, and now he wants to get first dibs on all those future views.
