It is awesome. There's a devoted fan. Heck he's even advertising a bit for the game. People are seeing how much people like their games. If I were a dev, or even one of the lowly programmers, I would send him a game with money out of my own pocket.

I wonder what they're going to do with all the caps though?

Make a giant hollow glass Pip-Boy statue and start filling it up, of course.

Thats just too damn perfect for a PR move by Bethesda. As long as that letter actually gets to someone that can make it happen i totally see them spinning this into a solid bit of advertisement.

My sisters ex saved almost an entire steamer trunk full of beer bottle caps.

He was a raging alcoholic.

Alcoholism and game fan devotion are totally different things. You're mixing Radeons and GeForces... no, wait :D

It was just a lot of caps. He didn't play video games. I guess for him drinking was like gaming and he was a big fan.

I see, Angry Orchard, Coke, Leinenkugel, Woodchuck, Serria Nevada, Sam Adams and many others I don't recognize. He's a connoisseur.

Why would he part with such a fortune when the Great War is coming?

Maybe they can throw him in as a character in one of the DLCs too while they're at it.

If a bottle cap is not worth at least 3 cents, the guy is not getting anything.

Well considering they would be steel and scrap metal prices they would be as a whole worth about 30 cents as 1 ton of steel is about 72$

so the only way he is getting a copy is if they roll with the pr angle.

Personally I think it is awesome... though he could have played it up a bit more with a Fallout like story maybe some burned paper edges etc

Well shoot. Maybe I should send in 37 sets of Naughty Nightwear. I'm in sales, so my Barter skill should be good enough to make the trade...right?

Only if you have the Lady Killer perk for the secret dialogue options.

7.5 years of drinking and thats all he saved up?

I've been saving my bottle caps to give to my niece who is "collecting" bottle caps and when my Sister yells at me I give them to a friend who is using them to make a bar top in his mancave.
Now I feel like an alcoholic lol

The way I see it, Bethesda is in a tight spot here. This was incredibly clever, and good, free promotion for Fallout. The guy should definitely get the game for that. Problem is, if that happens, who else is going to try it? It's cool once. It's not so neat if Beth ends up being a dumping ground for everyones bottlecaps.

On a side note, I'm glad I'm not the only person who does this. I have nowhere near as many as this guy, but I've been saving bottle caps for years. Got a couple of jars full.

He gave them the option of requiring prewar money so Beth has an out already reject the offer of caps and give him either a discount voucher or shirt or bobble head honestly his body in the game with a cap horde is not a bad idea. And it is not like everyone will all collect 2250 bottle caps and spend the 30 or so dollars to send 12 lbs of steel in the mail...

be a lot funnier to say sure we will transfer your bottle caps to post war fallout but you still have to buy the game if you want to visit them... give his char his seven years of life saving in the game... or give him a free copy and tell anyone else that they need to send in enough that recycles into the cost of game plus the time it takes a dev to create a way for people to get free bottle caps and the time it takes an intern to count them. I can just see the post offices face when they get package after package of heavy metal bottle caps, which beth soft can recycle a thousand at a time for the weight in metal as a pr stunt. or they simply write it off as advertising. they could have a lot of fun with this. depends on the suit looking at issue which way run with it. pepsi made a fortune a few years back on bottle caps that content pet plastics, until they offered a jet...

Good PR and they should hook him up. Hell a Steam code doesn't technically "cost' anything. But Bethesda would have to make a public statement that no one else should attempt this stunt or they will be buried in bottle caps. I'm thinking on the scale like the "nuts" that people sent CBS in order to keep Jericho on the air. Says here 9 tons worth.

http://news.slashdot.org/story/07/05/26/0324229/jericho-fans-send-over-nine-tons-of-nuts-to-cbs

On the other hand, if everyone shipped boxes of bottle caps to Bethesda, they just might save the USPS from bankruptcy, right?

This marketing opportunity is just too perfect. Company would be frigging morons not to leverage this as much as they can. They should respond to his letter in similar fashion and give him a little extra something beyond the game. Social sites would eat it up and they would get a huge ROI for it.

*note this only applies to the original sender for his creativity and for creating the buzz, not the 5000 idiots that are going to follow suit trying for a free copy.

the issue is the only return they would get is more people trying this the only way they could possibly honor his letter is if they made some press release of it and state further deals would not be achieved with caps imagine if they accepted caps for the game from everyone who decided to send them in people would go to a bar and get a bunch of free caps and send them in.
