Malaysian authorities crush 1,069 crypto mining rigs with a steamroller

why didn't they just line them up better and just go straight over them.
Or just sell them to other countries.

There was a thread on this over at Reddit where the Philippines destroyed a bunch of illegally imported Lambos. They do it to send a message and avoid any indication of impropriety/corruption. In many instances (including the US), when confiscated stuff like this is sold, the proceeds often end up in the wrong hands (or even going right back into the pockets of the offenders)

Looks like antminers. Of no use to this world but mining bitcoin on misappropriated electricity.
Would like to have salvaged the fans maybe. The supplies are 12V only.

This was their "politician kissing a baby" moment. Make sure the news is watching, then do something that gets noticed. They could have easily gone in one of those shredders that are at any number of waste dump sites, and probably would have been more efficient too and turned them into ewaste scraps.

That said, those did not look like video card based mining rigs. So the only place they could go to is other miners, which kind of defeats the purpose of what they're trying to do. Plus once again, this seems to all have come from raids on places who were stealing electricity. I mean for crying out loud, how expensive is electricity over there that they still need to sell it, I mean sure it's definitely the corporate attitude of minimizing costs, but come on!

Asic boxes, like others have said. No precious GPUs were harmed in this publicity stunt. I assume the remains will be melted down to make belt buckles or something.

This is so moronic why not action them off!? Then take the earnings and purchase computers for their school system or kids in need? :cautious:
It appears you dont know what these custom ASICs are.
They are chips (+systems) designed for one task.
There is no software for them and their ability to do other tasks is extremely limited.

They'd be good heaters for EVs. In colder climates using the heat kills range more than anything. Why waste that on resistive heat strips? Run a mining rig, keep warm and make a few extra on the side! ;-)

They still could have been better served trying to find another owner for them. With them crushed all they will do is effectively decrease a landfills capacity.

You could say the same thing about drugs, guns or counterfeit merchandise that gets seized by police too... yet no one does.

That's not what he said.

Problem with that solution is the mere existence of counterfeit merchandise being in the open market is harmful to the original manufacturer of those products.

The point is that it is considered contraband, and it is destroyed to ensure that it will never again be used in the commission of crime.

Fucking primitives, what a waste of tech and resources.
Best to sell them or give it to schools' tech labs to toy around with the components.

If you want to send a message, have to people stealing the power lye on the ground and have the rollers start with the feet end!

That's just stupid.

Yeah, I think crypto is a pyramid scam that has made some of the worst human beings on earth incredibly wealthy, but crushing the hardware is some smooth-brain bull shit. Grow up FFS.

have you been following the world news for the last 10 years... Malaysia has the most 0 bullshit tolerance president on the planet. Do drugs, 2 week amnesty (might be an exaggeration), fail to turn yourself in, die in giant country wide swat operation....
Want to mine crypto eh?

Because a heat pump is superior use of limited power. Waste heat pumps in bonus heat from outside, even when outside is colder.

Of course heat pump efficiency is better at kcal/watt.* It's also far more complex and prone to failure and/or needing service, etc. Standard capcitance heating units are rugged, compact devices. But as I said if one is going to depend on this for heat why not do something "productive"? ;-)

*At around and above the balance point. In Thief River Falls, MN, for example, when the actual air temp can drop to colder than minus thirty degrees Fahrenheit, that tiny heat pump's efficiency is going to be less than traditional resistance (nichrome) and capacitive (ceramic) heating units. There are newer heatpump units that retain over 90 capacity at minus 20°F but these aren't practical in the confines of a consumer EV.
