Ok so I am trying to reinstall windows 8 but my boot disk is all scratched to heck and keeps giving me errors. Unfortunately I dont have anymore dvd-r's nor the money to go buy any. So I downloaded the installer from microsoft and selected to install by creating media... then usb flash drive. Heres the thing though... I dont have a USB flash drive... I do however have a small usb powered portable HDD, so I created a small 5GB partition on it hoping I could use that partition to install the boot image, but it isnt working.
So the question is, is there a way to partition and/or format this portable hdd so that windows thinks one of the partitions is a USB flash drive?? It seems like this should be doable because I have been able to boot from other images off this hdd before (osx 10.8 boot disk) so the computer itself is definitely able to boot from an external hdd... I just need to be able to set it up properly.
