machine wont go to windows update

my system isnt wanting to connect to windows update, or run trend micro virus scan, it seems to be the clients dont want to run. i ran avg and updated it, i only removed 1 virus, i also ran spybot and adaware, but to no avail. all of my security settings are set to defaults, what could be the problem.

Cliffs:
1. machine wont access the windows update site, or run trend micro's house call
2. already removed the only virus AVG was able to find
3. already set the internet explorer securities to defualt levels

Have you run Adaware, Spybot, and Hijack This yet?

If trend micro wouldn't run go to pcpitstop.com and run the antivirus they have. This site will not remove any it finds. But it does give you a page you can print with the exact paths and names to remove.
