MacBook Pro to external display ... what port to use?

I have a relatively new 15" MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports. I am looking to grab a 34" display, and I noticed that they have different types of ports depending on the brand/model. What is the ideal port for my laptop? I can't seem to find any displays that have a Thunderbolt 3 ports. Some of them have Thunderbolt 2 ports. It is my understanding that I can use this port, but I would need some type of adapter. What about a USB-C port? Can I jack right into a USB-C port directly? The connector is the same, but I'm confused about the compatibility. Lastly, what if the display only has a DisplayPort? Can I use this as well, and does this kind of connection still support audio?

This isn't really the right place to ask since a lot of people are using a potato for a display. A simple USB-C to DisplayPort. Please use google next time. It's all out there.
