My daughter has a MBP.

About 4 years old and actually in good shape.

Problem is I have no Apple experience.
The machine won't boot.
I get this greyed out screen and a circle or something that just keeps spinning.

I've gone on line and tried the basics, even tried to put in the rescue disc....no go.

Is there hope or should this go in the trash?

Boot holding shift key.

Insert disk, hold option key, boot from disk.

Boot holding Command+R.

Have you tried the above?

apple logo and spinning gear?

Basically its trying to boot to an OS, but is going slowly or cant read the next set of data correctly. Holding down shift might help since that puts it into safe mode and could potentially allow data to be recovered.

I bet your hard drive is dying.

If it's a 2011 15"/17" MacBook Pro, it could also be suffering from a GPU issue that affects that model. It tends to cause odd problems that are not always obviously GPU related. This issue can cause the boot up logo to have a colored tinge to it, or lines, and it absolutely won't fully boot in this case. If so, it's entitled to a free logic board replacement.

Note that the offer only lasts to the end of this month.

So far at my work I've had close to 30 Macs serviced for this. I have two there right now and two more going tomorrow.

Will it not even boot from the rescue disc? It wasn't clear.

The rescue disc, after it boots up and presents the "Welcome to OS X - Click to Install" -- should allow you to cancel the install. It will then let you pick a limited number of things to run. You want to run Disk Utility. That will let you run a Repair on the hard drive, and see if there are any errors.

Most of the time, it's a HDD problem.

It won't hurt to try this:

The NVRAM (or PRAM) can act up occasionally, and that can cause weird problems.
